OK, now with the recent floods in the upper mid-west the primary food belt of the U.S. Are we entering into a worsening state of economic dire straits?  Food prices are climbing at an alarming rate even now because of rising fuel costs.  Even now basic commodities such as corn, wheat, and soy crops, beef, poultry are being devastated by natural & economic disasters, farmers are being driven into bankruptcy. Job layoffs are at an all-time high. the very prosperity of our country is in threat call it, (def-con yellow). Yet our idle brained politicians can't seem to be effectively helping more like hindering with all there in- fighting and bickering, tell me is it just my paranoia here or are we heading for an economic bankruptcy of epic proportions? Our monetary situation is even bleaker the dollar is at it's lowest ever all over the world's markets. If your not the least bit shaken by these events occurring then please allow me to be not only stressed by them, but damn well scared...:(!)..trippy

I am with ya....and may be worse than the Great Depression of 1929 and I think that there are more nay sayers out there that think its not gonna happen....if I do drive somewhere, there seem to be more cars out there then when gas was $3 a gallon as if their driving is out of protest. This is why it will be worse than the Great Depression; BLEEP like the dude that wrote in another blog that nothing will change in his life regardless of the cost. All i can do now is try to get rommates and catch kroger with their 10 for $10 deals and stock up on canned foods, grow a garden and barter this for that.

Trippydude,
I believe you have every right to be concerned about our economic future. Especially, due to the recent floods and of course the rise in gas prices. The ARABS are not going to lower the price by any substantial amount by any means. I think you bring up a very good alarm and substantiated.

The economy has passed the war as an issue. Energy costs
are the driving factor. Global Warming from carbon based fuels
are now recognized as a pressing issue. I think Americans are
smart and understand the need to aggressively pursue renewable's.
The numbers used below come from the office of Budget and
Management on the (whitehouse.gov) web site.

US Spending 2007
Department of Energy
(In millions of dollars)
National Nuclear Security Administration 9,316
Nuclear Waste Disposal 544
Energy Resources, 2,949
Total, Outlays 22,639

Department of Defense
(In millions of dollars)
Research, Development, Test and Evaluation 73,156
Total, Outlays 504,863

Budget Totals: (In Billions)
Receipts 2,416
Outlays 2,770
Deficit 354
Net Interest on Debt 247

2,770 billion dollars were spent in 2007 (including 247 billion
for interest on the debt), (505 billion for Defense). 73 billion on
Research,Development, Test and Evaluation for military equipment.
9 billion for the missile defense system. 16 billion for NASA.

The Department of Energy spends less than less than 3 billion
on renewable energy.

We spend over 4 billion just on military housing. I encourage you
to scroll through the billions we spend. We are paying a high
price for carbon based fuels because of finite supplies.

Mr. Obama has a plan to spend 150 billion over 10 years and
leads on the issue. This is one of the main reasons I support
him. I believe this number should be closer to 50 billion a year
for 20 years, toward re

Tuesday, Bernanke gave a pass to the
FreddyMac & FannyMae mortgage centers
(the only institutions still willing to buy up subprime loans). Now, they won't have to have the reserves of cash that other companies are legally required to have to operate. If these two institutions fail-go under- like Bear&Sterns, then that could set off the real depression everyone is worried about. These other things like the price of food & gas, etc. can fuel a recession-maybe a hard & long recession, but it will be the collapse of financial institutions like FreddyMac & FannyMae that could spark a real depression. Thats why Bernanke made some concessions on accounting practices for them. Whew !
But why worry... Obama promises to...

kevina, those numbers are staggering thanks for sharing
Thatlisagirl, unfortunately true on all counts
the american public is in denial.
trippydude, I'm afraid also, but don't let it stress you out, cause for now it's out of our hands, just try to live the best you can, the key is to be frugal with your spending, look for specials at your grocery store and use coupons, as for gas prices, as cromangon says "the Arabs aren't going to drop their prices", so true is that statement. Greed drives their hearts, and poisons their minds.
goneforgood, look for M.M.A.'s to start dropping (marginal mortgage accounts), lenders will start dropping these like hot potatoes Mac & Mae, won't be able to off load these accounts even to government sponsored programs with grants to subsidize their losses. Obama's promises are just words filling a page for headlines, I'll wait to see if they turn into action if he's elected.

IT'S A SHAME THAT WE ARE SUPPOSE TO BE ONE OF THE RICHEST,IF NOT THE RICHEST,COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD AND WE ARE GOING DOWN FAST. HOW IS IT THAT WE MAKE OUR OWN MONEY AND WE ARE IN DEBT. REGUARDLESS OF HOW ANY ONE FEELS ABOUT THIS AND THAT I MYSELF CAN NOT STAND FOR FOUR MORE YEARS OF BUSH'S PLANS. I DON'T EVEN THINK HE KNOWS HOW TO GET US OUT OF THIS SLUMP. BUT HE IS GOOD ABOUT MAKING EXCUSES. KOODOS TO BUSH.

Tim Irvin;
Outstanding post ! Yes, in the end, it will
probably come down to a government bailout/takeover for Mac & Mae. I agree with you completely about Obama's words/promises need to be demonstrated. I'm so feedup with with people who set their hopes on frothy rhetoric/promises. It would be nice if the two parties could cooperate and actually do something.
Like maybe fix one of their government programs
already in exsistence; Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid,Tax codes...come to mind.
I mean, why bother with new programs like universal healthcare if you can't tend to the buisness of upkeep & maintence of what already is in effect. Why is there so much faith in government to fix problems if they continuely demonstrate their ineptness ? Obama scares me with his proposed taxing shellgames to fund a 'follow the rainbow' aray of bigbrother cando projects.
It seems so elementary & proven that raising taxes actually promotes & feeds a recession & negative growth. Considering we are already on shaky ground, higher taxes on top of it all could be a coup de grace' for the economy !
I have not forgotten how severe the recession was back in the 70s when Jimmy Carter was promising real change.
In God I trust...not man.

Dammitt! I think if our men/women are dying by the handfulls daily to help them, they could atleast be reasonable with the friggen oil, it's taking over a hundred dollars to fill my suburban and that's the lower octane fuel.

Omars....I just dont know what to say about filling up your suburban costs you a Franklin at a time.

I am trying to find the wisdom in those words "that which does not kill us will make us strong". This is killing us and many are sinking, while they laugh and drink wine in their castles in the sand that we pay for....

trippy....i could take you up on that barter :-)

I'm hauling presious cargo, "my family" the way people in metro atlanta drive, I feel safer with my family in a bigger vehicle, I feel they stand a better chance at survival if some idiot on a cell phone runs into them. that doesnt mean I want to pay $150.00 for gas.

point taken omars, no you shouldn't have to pay $150.00 to fill up. Nor should I have to pay ETHER! Do you agree that the American consumer is being victimised and held hostage by Big oil and it's gang of speculators?
Here's what one blogger says " I believe this is a directed attempt to force us to consume less fuel ,and to ween us by hook or crook off of foreign oil, by the U.S. Government, The lack of Congress to enable itself a ruling to put up price caps and regulate oil speculation proves the point." omars my best to you & your family...:(!)..trippy

Obama will change this recession over night, yeah right, this country economy has gone up and down. Who can forget Jimmy Carter and his nighmare term , people keep blaming Bush and sure he can be to blame but congress and the top leaders are the fault they are playing politics with our lives and a lot has to do with the upcoming November elections, they fail to explore off shore drilling, we pay farmers not to grow crops and we send money overseas to support governments that don't even like us. We need to do away with political parties and find a way to be non-partisian government where those elected are working for our well being not theirs, show me a poor politician.
