When I had heard on the news that gas would rise above $4 this summer, I had just put $35.68 in my honda. I decided that I had to do something to change my habits because I cannot afford to keep spending this money, which I know is not as much as others spend, but is still alot for me. I decided after that day, I would only drive my car to the grocery store once a week, to work and ride my bike everywhere else. So far, since I have started this, I have reduced my fuel bill to $15.49-$16.28 a week in fuel..and lost 6 pounds! Now, I am riding my bicycle to work 2-3 times a week and that it will decrease my fuel bill even further, as long as the weather permits me to to. What is interesting is I am really enjoying the time I spend riding and wish I had done this before, for me and my bank account.

I dont see any sort of end coming of this, so as long as the weather allows me to ride, I believe is turning into my preferred mode of transportation....and give me a tan at the same time :-)

Congratulations Lisa!

All I can say is that I stopped smoking. But the bicycle thing has been suggested by my brother. Maybe I should take him up on it.

But I understand your desperation to save money! Who knows when or IF gas prices will return to a more palatable price?

I can't ride to work for it is a 45 minute drive at a consistent speed of 75 Mph.

I know...and is sucks...I still smoke a little. But I know that not everyone can bike to work. I only work 7 miles away, so why not...

I think that even if the gas prices become lower, the retailers will charge more because they know our squealing point.

Maybe we should have squealed at $2.50!

Just like the retailers, now that they raised prices for produce and just groceries in general...do you realy think they will lower the prices if the fuel prices become more palatable.....you got 3 guesses and the first 2 dont count.

I actually thought of getting a motorcycle or scooter, but cant afford it and private sellers charge a mint for their used equipment as opposed to 2 years ago. Sorry to hear about the crash, I have been lucky so far.....

I wouldnt call myself smart....but resourceful.

If I were smart...I would have made very different choices and not be where I am now.

Lisa, how long does it take you to bike your 7 miles to work? Sounds like a plan to me, weather permitting as you said. I work 13 miles away from home but I come home in the morning and go back in the afternoon. That makes it a 52 mile round trip daily for me. See, I'm a school bus driver in Fulton County and I don't want to just SIT around once I've done my morning route. So, just trying to get a feel for how long it would take to ride a bicycle 13 miles....

It takes about 35 minutes and the route I go isnt very hilly, but there are some ascending grades that I am still trying to build up my speed with. So, your 13 miles depends if there are many up hills or how steep an ascending grade.

Before I actually went to work on my bike, I came home early one day and rode my bike there in some moderate traffic to see if I could handle it for one, and see how long it would take, and so far its a pretty consistent time. You just have to give yourself some extra time for "things" to happen. I leave an hour or so before I am supposed to be in, that way I can change my clothes and rest before starting my job.

I will also say that your ability to ride it will depend on your level of fitness. I am in fair condition, but have to have my energy drink before I go...so.

I thank you for asking. I hope that others will start doing the same thing if they can, or do something else to avoid paying the gas station more than what is needed. I am starting to see a few people riding their bikes on the same road...so....maybe :-)

Good Luck!

Thanks for replying, Lisa! On my route I see a mother driving a golf cart on the grassy part or shoulder of the road where I drive my route. She goes to the school and picks up her son everyday. Wouldn't it be a great idea if we could just commute in golf carts like they do in Peachtree City? Just not every little town has golf cart paths! So, that wouldn't be feasible unless they start building the paths for golf carts or make them accessible to the roads. Can't see that happening either. Just a thought though! :o)

I can see it getting to the point where street legal ATV's (if thats possible), scooters and motorcycles fill the streets more than cars, SUV's and pickups. This is nothing new in Europe, thats the way for them, and they pay $10 a gallon in England. Imagine that....

Actually, I am trying to find a scooter now for the days I cant ride so I can only use my car for the grocery store and occasional jam sessions at my friends house. Were there's a will theres a way.

Lisa, Adda Gurl! u go!,
right now Vespa Scooters 50-125 cc.'s are bout 900-1200$ and get up to 65-70 miles per gallon. My friend has a french made Ferion tri-wheeler he paid $3,995, its 250cc engine gets him 56 mpg. But word to the wise, shop & compare, now I'm told that you don't need a license for any scooter under 250cc's, but liabilty insurance or full coverage (even better) is mandatory, and the same laws that govern motorcycles pertains to scooters. so again on insurance shop & compare. Remember when riding lights on! My friend has a scooter riding club " Old Scooter Coots" get this the prez of the club is 71yrs young, hehehe. GL have funzzzz! G/F......Trippy

Thanx Trippy...I thought I read that over 50cc required a license. I want a 250 since its a bit heavier. I really want the honda reflex, but cant afford it, so am looking into a JMStar Aviator which is about half the price. I am having a hard time finding dealers that are local with an internet page without having to sell your child for....but thanx for the info!

I have a big gas hungry v-8, and i mash on the big pedal every chance i get! Seriously though, i freed up the exhaust, (quietly) the air intake and changed the computer program, and my truck gets 4 mpg more than factory (went from 17 to 21 mpg). I have more power, the engine runs cleaner, and still passes at factory emmissions. Some of the keys to getting the most fuel mileage is to keep your tires properly inflated. Keep your engine tuned up. Also take off from a stop gradually, and merge on to the interstate at a steady pace. I would say drive a few miles under the posted speed limit, but that can be a death wish in atlanta. Bless you all.

Lisa, you should check out the BIG 4 Japanese scooters (honda, yamaha, suzuki esp), stay with a 250 or bigger, they will cruise at decent speed without struggling. Just walk into a dealer & pretend you are looking for Starbucks or whatever, casually start looking at the scooters sort of spur of the moment...etc...etc
