I imagine one day, we will take our grandchildren for a ride in our hovercar and pass what used to be our lakes, now dry and evaporated; developers had begun to build a huge neighborhood called Lanier Downs because barren land in this state has to be built on and habitated by someone because population density creates dollars for everyone around. We pass by what used to be that lake and tell stories how we used to use to race boats and water ski and get the sunburns of our lives and fish on that lake. We would become angry telling the story because we knew what it used to be and we dont have it anymore. Our grandchildren would ask what happened to the lake. What will we tell them? That a long time ago, we had a time were we didnt get any rain and that lake was getting low because we used to be able to use this lake for play and for consumption for our own area, but this Army Corps of Engineers felt it necessary to send our water from that lake to other neighboring states and to maintain the lives of  rare mussels.  They would ask what are mussels? We would tell them they are a type of shellfish. Then they might ask: why are shellfish more important than people?

What will we say? I know its about more than shellfish. But, what is the sense of sending billions of gallons of water downstream when our state has no other water source, and no assistance from any of our neighboring states when in fact they scoff and brag that they have the water and why dont we leave our state and go live where they have the water? Its ludicrous and boggles the mind that a judge ruled that based on our circumstances, there has been a minimal reduction in the water released from Lake Lanier. Why are there STILL many people that defy the system and water their lawns in the middle of the night? This is a serious thing that is happening any yet anything we are trying to do to reduce our consumption is thwarted by the daily drainage by the Corps. Whats going to happen when they drain the last of the water? We will be screwed and they'll say "Thanks for the water, but now those states that you sent the water to are now converting their salt water from the coast for consumption....so we wont need your water anymore, not that you have any!"

It is my sincere suspicion that this more POLITICAL than anything. Let's look what is affected by the Army Corps of Engineers cutting off any flow.
1. ALABAMA... If they cut the flow, their POWER PLANT will not be able to provide ELECTRICITY and the state of ALABAMA will more than likely have to PURCHASE Electricity from another state at a higher rate to provide for their customers...ergo...NO PROFITS from THAT PLANT!...that's it for Alabama.
2. FLORIDA... It's not the SHELLFISH (like the propoganda they are spreading) they are protecting..IT'S the SHELLFISH FISHERMAN's jobs they are protecting! So how is it that the water we are spilling out is protecting these MUSSELS? When they CLEARLY ALLOW the (let's face it, there is no nice way to say this..) the UN-EDUCATED who can't or won't get a regular job are FISHING THESE MUSSELS for a living?... IF we cut the flow to them they will be JOBLESS ...ergo...raising the UNEMPLOYMENT RATE for the state. ...POLITICAL...NOT ENVIROMENTAL!
But hell, I'm just a caveman! I could be wrong.

I know its about more than shellfish. But the end of my post outlined what the solution is....which is a possibility to convert the sale water to drinking water. My mother lives in hawaii and that is how they get their water is from the ocean and is converted. Its completely ludicrous that our neighboring states insist on kicking the source when its down, when both states have a coast that water can be drawn from. I think if I was Governer of either state, with the basic knowledge that their state does have a coast line, I think I would be embarassed to say a word to the state that has a water shortage just because the water came from upstream for a number of years. It just doesnt make sense to me. I am sure it is political, but jeez....will nobody be happy until its all gone?
