Detroit we must open ourselves up to real change, the kind of change that will make our city a proud and beautiful place to live again. Detroit still has so much to offer, but we as tax payers as voters must start  taking more of a pro-active role in our city government. In order for us to see that  positive change come about. We must no longer stand for crooks playing politics with our tax dollars and with our city. We must  no longer allow our elected government officials tell us one of their great  master plans and do not question the over all effects of their plan.  We need to find out everything about their plans like for instance who came up with the plan, what do they stand to gain from it, how will we the residents benefit from the plan, and what if the plan doesn't  turn out the way that our city officials are promising,  who will end up paying for it not working???? The answer is usually the tax payer.  We are the ones that pay for general contractors over charging in a city contract, because one of our city officials is getting a payoff, we are the ones who suffer when city workers are laid off and the work is outsource  to contractors in a so called effort of saving money, what have we saved when our city is deeper in debt every year and  these contractors are getting multi-million dollars contracts and then we have to sale another part of Detroit in order to balance the budget.  What kind of city management is that???  Sure it's ok to have different conventions and sports events coming to Detroit, but we need to benefit financially from those events and know exactly where that money is going and how it is being used. We must take firm steps now towards a real new Detroit. I know that I'm about to step on a few toes but I'm alright with that, because some people are so pro-black that they become the person that they despise. If you go downtown and many other parts of the city you will see that there are many suburbanites that come into the city on a daily basis and support city businesses; and many of those businesses would not survive if not for their support.  Furthermore, regardless of popular belief Detroit  is not all black.  In certain areas of Detroit it is like a rainbow, we have black, white, asian, hispanic  etc. Every tax payer dollar holds the same value, every resident's vote holds the same weight. If I was  of  another color other then black I would have a serious problem with  politicians  that I  was thinking of voting for encouraging people to vote for them  solely because they are black.  Being black doesn't mean that we have all of the answers, we must open our arms and our minds and enbrace diversity, enbrace change and that especially goes for Detroit public schools. Detroit can not solely grow to the pinnacle that we wish it to by  closing out certain groups or races of people; anyone that suggest that we can are only thinking of themselves and of what they have to gain by keeping us divided. We can not continue  with  business as usually in Detroit if we are sincere in our desire, hopes and wishes of achieving significant positive growth and change in Detroit. Stop voting for Detroit candidates just because they are black,  I grew up in a Detroit of diversity, strength and character, when need to get back to that. Deroit like everywhere else in American is a part of a global economy and alone with globalization comes diversity.

Good post Springthing...there are so many issues to face in Detroit...I mean where do you start? Like I mentioned in my post about Detroit, There are so many things we need to address and the first thing is getting rid of the "Business as usual" politicians.

Cityblues you had a really great post. I think we should start with cleaning house. First with our Mayor, then Monica Conyers, and then the Detroit school board. Anyone who doesn't want to enbrace real change. As far as the Deroit school board we need to try any feasible means, we have to open ourselves up for change. We need elected officials that will be happy with just their pay checks and not use Detroit as a tool for them to become rich. Right now Detroit public schools are over crowded, that in itself is a big issue. We need to teach our children other means of enjoying life other then hanging in the streets all of the time, or just walking in the MIDDLE of the street or buying designer clothes that their parents can't afford. We have to teach them to set goals for themselves, to make a plan and show them how to make that plan become a reality. Parents need to spend more quality time with our children.

city blues don't get me wrong I know that all of Detroit kids aren't hanging in the streets but there are so many that are. What is this thing with them walking in the middle of the streets??? I hate it. I work with some Detroit kids during the summer, One of the things I teach them is to walk on the sidewalk, that's what they are for. we teach them conflict resolutions, we teach them different hobbies and alot of different things. The name of the club is the Jr. Alps. I started not have it this year, but when I was visiting my mom they caught me when I was getting into my truck.(smile)So if you see any big headed boys wearing caps that says Jr. Alps those are my boys.

I think it's wonderful that you work with the young boys springthing, We need more of that happening. It's funny that you mentioned buying designer clothes, because I just had a lengthy conversation with someone about that exact topic! I don't know how it got started but somehow our youth associate their worth with the price of their clothes and it's the craziest thing I have ever seen! They truly are Brandwashed! As for them walking in the middle of the street and hanging on the streets..you know I have noticed that too and it just reminds me of children who literally have nothing better to do....it's a shame too! I think you have some great ideas about how to revamp things.

Springthing...it's called cyclical social ills. There is a lot that is so elementary that is wrong (i.e., morals, values, respect for elders and others) that it's hard to reprogram an 18 year-old that has lived his/her life the same way for so long. I've worked with children too and some of the things that come out of their mouths are reprehensible. Just to get a 'thank you', 'please', 'may I' is like pulling teeth.

My daughter is out of state in college. She is in awe at southern hospitality where everyone speaks to each other. Coming from Detroit, to look someone in the eye is like a threat(?) How do you de-program kids who watch political figures and adults act like kids? I mean we can't save them all, but my goodness there are so many that need help!

PessimisticOptimist my mom and dad raised eleven of us before my dad died they had been married for forty years. In the summer time we used to travel south I remember the first time that most of us took a trip together as a family, Alone with my brothers and sisters I was shocked at how friendly most people were in the south. In order to improve the quality a life in Detroit, we must face and deal with some social issues.

It's called southern hospitality Springthing , something they don't do up here in places like Detroit , New York , or Chicago . Enjoy the south while visiting , but , if you hear banjo music playing , get out ! Leave ! Run ! [ If you don't believe me , just ask Ned Beatty ]

Springthing. The truth is the light. I say amen to your solutions to some of Detroit's problems. I also worked with our city's youth (of diverse backgrounds). The kids were so appreciative of positive attention paid them. They were hungry for direction and willing to broaden their horizens. they participated in programs like Outward Bound (Achallenging chracter building outdoors project, Project Close-up (a mini-united nations like project )in Washinghton, D.C. ,junior achievement and other programs for kids. They soared! Our children are truly like clay molds. It's our job to shape them the way we want them to be. We can nurture them without spoiling them. They can be taught civility and still be cool. Maybe if someone had taught our mayor and Monica Conyers self-respect when they were young they would be assets instead of liabilities. Your post was very thought provoking and uplifting. A great example of the value of diversity in leadership was our beloved Maryann Mahaffey. She was a role model for all our young people. She was always available, would attend block club meetings, visit schools, churches and defended the citizens of Detroit until her last breath. Thanks for great insight.

Marygrove, isn't that amazing how hungry they are for direction?? I work with ages 9 through 13 and these guys are at total attention when I'm talking to them. A few of years ago it was some guys that were trying to sell drugs on my mom's street, which is something that the neighbors did not stand for. But before the police busted them up they were actually telling the little guys how lucky they were that I was taking time out for them. I was shocked, here I was telling them not to sell, use or hang around anyone that sold drug etc., and the dealers a few years older then my guys were telling them to listen to what I was telling them, to behave and to be greatful.

Maryann Mahaffey was a great humanitarian and will always be remembered, loved, and respected. There has yet to be another like her; she's a hard act to follow, but a good example for all of us who cares.

And you all are right, a lot of these kids truly are hungry for attention, a hug, a smile or just a kind word. I've heard some true horror stories in my life and have seen some young lives wasted, destroyed and even lost all because no one was paying attention, or sat down and actually talked to and listened to some of these kids. For the most parts it's the parent(s).

I'm a single mother and once I knew that I would be, I made it my business to be just that. No more living the single life. When my child had homework - so did I; when my child had projects in school we worked on them together. We talk about anything and everything. I knew where my child was -- I'd tell her she can't play around the corner because I can't see around the corner. So much of motherly nurturing and overall quality of life is missing at the expense of the child(ren) these days. We really need to go back to what worked when we were raised.

Yes people. I stay around the Warren/Conner developments they just refurbished. My five years of being here I have noticed a big change of our youth, and also the young adults,(20 somethings). If all they know are negativity, thats all they are going to do. Since I have noticed things that I have already seen many times over. The babies are mocking the young adults and so forth. Where are our mentors. Now I moving for my kids sake. The children over here look up to me, but disrespects me at the same time. Feeling sorry for the young ones when I gone is very sorrowful for me. I truly hope someone can come and help some of the youth.

Peaches. Although you might be aware already, you are near the Warren/Conner Development Coalition. I think they still have a program: Youth On The Edge Of Greatness. The program is excellent, provides mentoring and All kinds of activities including summer employment assistance. The Director is Maggie DeSantis born and bred on the eastside. They also have a program to assist families with getting on their feet;offering job trainning, assistance obtaining an auto, purchasing a home and obtaining medical insurance. Keep up your good work with your neighbor kids!Wherever you move there will be a kid who needs you.

Springthing why are you so interested in how I look. What difference does it make. I am beautiful, and I love the way I look. I don't care if you believe anything I say or not.
If I want to use Janet Damita Jo Jackson's picture what difference does it make. I guess you believe everyone else who has flowers, devils, Queen Elizabeth, cartoon characters etc.

Why are your pictures so far back? Oh yeah I am in Kwami's pocket, now what.....are you jealous, and why would Mayor Kilpatrick help me sue the city. If you read and comprehend you would understand, but I doubt it.

But seriously, I am really tripping on the fact that you want to see my picture. But do me a favor and explain to me why it is so important for you to see me, and not others who have not posted a picture, and those whom I mentioned earlier.

If you can give me a logical reason to why it is so important for you to see me then I will post my pictures so that you can see how beautiful I am.

Springthing,You should be applauded for your blog and your efforts with the youth of Detroit. If more people cared as much as you Detroit would be a better city all around.Youths like to walk in the middle of the street because so many things are out of their control. It is a defiance thing, like we shall not be moved. They are constantly being told what to do,or they are undersupervised. If Rappers are who they look up to maybe they say,Would Snoop get out of the way?NO,he'd blow pot smoke in their face and laugh. It's who kids look up to,and celebrities will continue to be worshipped and emulated from now to St.Smithens Day.
