My daughter attends Detroit Public Schools and I pray everyday that she is going to come home safe. You hear every year about someone that has gotten shot at one of the high schools it happens so often that many times it doesn't make the news. If it happens around the block from the school they don't consider it a school shooting even though  it may had happen on the way home from school. This is Detroit school system, class rooms are overcrowed. If they have textbooks many times they are outdated and the schools are overcrowed. Detroit students have many more challenges then suburban kids. Sometimes tough love is  one of  the solutions.  If these cops go light on these kids they will walk all over them.  I support the Detroit Police 150%. I support  Detroit turning the school system over to charter schools, we need to try everything availabe to save our kids, because what we are doing now just isn't working. If the Police didn't get that situation under control  yesterday ; that situation could have gotten totally out of control especially this time of year. If you notice  the students they interviewed was supporting the police, some of those kids out there yesterday were not  students, they were not in uniforms. The police help to protect our  school children not hurt them.  If it wasn't for them we would have total chaos

I agree with everything you've said here. I'm a mom as well, only my children are adults now, and I have grand-children in school. I support the Police Dept. fully. There have been times when poor judgement was used by some officers; but as a whole they do a very good job. I believe the problem lies within our government. When government took the control from parents and teachers, we began to see the fall of schools, and neighborhoods. The young people have no fear of anything, and even less respect for authority. This is not to say all children are bad. We don't hear as much about the one's who are truly excelling. I pray for a better way than what we have at present.

If one of those kids smarting off had been mine I wouldnt have cared if they gave him a little love tap on the back of the head putting them in their place! Too many kids think they are the boss and they have a lot to learn!

You cannot have someone handcuffed and hit them upside the head with a book bag... also,
you cannot jump off of a motorcyle and grab someone by the throat.
would you allow that to happen to your children?
when I was growing up we got hit with rulers and paddles. we didnt have to worry about getting hit in the head or someone putting their hands on our necks... that was over board. I SMELL ANOTHER LAW SUIT!

"when I was growing up we got hit with rulers and paddles. we didnt have to worry about getting hit in the head or someone putting their hands on our necks"

If teachers were still able to do that, you wouldn't have what you have today.
Kids will be kids, but that crap that happened, you can blame the parents too.

Tactic deployed, crowd dispursed. No injuries or property damage. A smart BLEEP teenager being grabbed by the throat and told to get his BLEEP out of there or go to lock up- nothing new there.Seems like a better choice then going to jail and mommy and daddy having to pay some fines and kid possibly getting a record.

The book bag upset the head I did not agree with, however from the looks of the video he barely even hit the kid with it and he sure did not seemed hurt.

If your looking for a hands off police society, it does not exist and never will.

When I was young and loaded one night a cop decided to stop me. I decided my best course of action was to rip the windshield wiper off his police car (we were walking/staggering down a street.) The cop proceeded to beat the tar out of me and I came to in jail. My parents were called because I was only 17. After hearing what I had done my father thanked the cop for helping me since I "had fallen" shook his hand and asked if he could just leave me in jail. I learned a valuable lesson that night that in today's world a kid won't learn because of cries of abuse. The wiper would go unpunished and soon might become, who knows, stealing a car, home invasion, anything.

My point is if kids aren't stopped while they're young and impressionable, well you can see what happens or read it in the news almost daily.

The ruler and paddle days were good days, however; those days are long gone. Grabbing the kid by the throat may have seem tough but if would be much harder crying over him at a gravesite after being shoot for climbing into someone's window or having his brains blown out because a dope deal went bad. I do volunteer work with kids during the summer ages 9 through 13 some I hope I help save through the grace of God, but some I lose, if you only knew. What some kids don't do in the suburbs they come to Detroit to do and then they go back home, I see it everyday. Many of our kids need tough love now and they will thank us for it later; they will have a later. Not all kids need tough love some we can talk to and they will listen, but for the ones who don't listen Thank God for those police officers. It's not a good feeling picking your child up from school finding out that another child got shoot today.

Just a passing thought; Detroit schools are so far behind in quality teachers, decent buildings, etc. because apparently the city & county powers that be seem to put educating children last on their list-It is the fault of the city government that robs the taxpayers blind and an equally corrupt Detroit school board. Also, if a student in school to learn is doing just that, they shouldn't have to worry about being approached by the law & many school kids welcome the extra patrols & security. I agree the police may tend to get a bit too physical at times but look what they deal with on an everyday basis in the city.

When Cop's tell you to "Take Off"...you take off,get lost, go away...or risk getting the hell beaten out of you....This is real simple.....But then PhoenixTrinity777 thinks there was a major injustice done. Also Phoenix is not posting replys.....

And people wonder why Detroit has a student passing rate of only 25%?? Teahcers and faculty are practically held hostage by some of these children and most of the fault is with the parents not exercising discipline in their own homes to insure the children are going to school to learn, not to play & fight each other. Keep the drug wars in the streets where the proper authorities can deal with them.

Bob Thompson(White Guy Paving Contractor) tried to give $250,000,000 (MILLION) to Detroit for schools and was called an outsider and a Racist....He took his money and walked away......

The rate is just over 32%! Its the males that had a 25% graduation rate. With more girls graduating they brought the percentage up! wow..lol

Reverend Circa53, Bob Thompson was the best thing that could had happen to Detroit. The powers that be (local government and school board) brainwashed the taxpayers. Yes, the racism card is the main card that our government play when they want to manipulate the people of Detroit. If there was ever a time for the state government to step in is now! and Car7858 you're right discipline starts at home and so does responsibility and respect for ourselves and humen life. Bottom line Detroiter's we need to start thinking for ourselves, raise our children to become intelligent men and women and stop allowing our local government and school board manipulate us for their own purpose and agenda. I mean how much worst can it get a 25% drop out rate. I'm thinking about sending my daughter back to private school, while we're still in Detroit.

I'm stunned by those of you that think it was alright for one officer to nearly run down kids and for another to grab a kid by the throat and yet another officer swats a kid with his own book bag ! Whew!! Unbelievable. This was in broad daylight with witnesses. I shudder to think what would have been done to these kids with no witnesses and cameras there. You same people wonder why the youth of today don't respect police officers? It's obvious ! That's not protecting and serving. That's abuse of power ! No way in hell would I accept this abusive treatment to my minor son or daughter! NO WAY IN HELL !

How in the HELL can people defend police brutality... WRONG IS WRONG.
I remember last year when that kid from pershing high school (WHO HAD JUST GRADUATED, BY THE WAY) got his Eye fractured by
an ignorant police officer they put him in a cell, didnt get him any medical attention and didnt even press any charges...
I respect authority, but i hate abusive authority. thats just flat out BULL#$&^*&^*^%%$

Mjames4208 and ceelo2,when the police says stop you stop, when they say go you go. These are the same policemen out there on the streets breaking up fights, responding to kids shooting other kids everyday. While you're the same ones sitting at home shaking your heads. Many of these teenagers have no respect for law because many of us don't teach them, and when kids don't show respect you treat them accordingly, you put the fear in them. Not one of those kids were hurt. Tell me would you feel the same if one of these kids destroy your property or rob you or how about bet you or your child up; tell me who are you going to call? We need to stop making excuses for these bad as.. kids. Where were you when that little girl got shot at Denby High or a couple of months ago when a child got shot at Southeastern? You weren't there were you, but those same police officers were and I thank God for them everyday. One of my members nine years old had a gun once, said he wanted to kill another kid for stealing his bike, he didn't realize that he wanted to take another humen beings life over a bike. These are the types of the kids that those police officers deal with everyday.

I understand what you are saying, but, that does not give the police the right to violate your person, especieally if you are already handcuffed. If you are deserving of capital punishment then fine.
All children aren't bad... My 18 year old son was eating at a coney island oneday in Detroit and the DPD harrassed him (Called him a fat BLEEP.. told him he was to BLEEP fat and stupid to be a crimminal) after they smashed his head up against the wall and searched him for a weapon.... on another occasion while waiting on the bus on 8 mile road (coming home from work) the WPD harrased him, actually he was walking down 8 Mile because the bus, for some reason never came. Also, my son was robbed at gun point a half a block from home.. THANK YOU JESUS, a wallet and a few dollars can be replaced.....
Actually, what i'm trying to say is that ALL KIDS AREN'T BAD. every child that was outside was not acting rowdy. If you want to blame someone for that mess blame the school. They should have been more organized. You don't just throw 2500 kids out of a school at one time.. there should have been some type of evacuation plan if the fire was that serious.
What is going to happen is that the POLICE may POTENTIALLY make some good kids BITTER.
Let the punishment fit the crime.
Now, back to my son, he is one of those good kids. He graduated HS he works and goes to WSU.
I recently purchased him a used vehicle and we are know longer in DETROIT! GOD IS GOOD

Yes mjames4208 God is good, all the time. I am sorry that your son went through such horrible experiences, and I agree I believe that there are probably more good kids then bad, it's just that the bad ones leave such a horrible impression. For a child to have turned out like yours you must be a good dad and you should be proud. I think part of the solution is for Detroit schools to decrease the number of students that they have in each high school and increase the number of police patrols and more parent participation woun't hurt either.

I never said the police were tright in any fashion but if the ones involved had been in school learning like they should have been, this incident would have never happened. More than likely it was either students from a rival school or others that are seen quite alot hanging around the school areas when they let out.

Yes, of course if I needed police assistance I would phone 911. They are paid to enforce the law. I am not. I didn't sign up for the job. So, yes I sit here and shake my head when I see criminal behavior of any type. I have been a victim of a crime. I put the blame squarely upon the shoulder of that particular individual. do you think that every kid out there that day had trouble on their minds? The cop rode through a crowd without regard to who was indeed in route home and who was up to no good! In my opinion it seems you believe that all teens are bad. You cannot lob them all into one ball and treat them like criminals because you are frustrated with some. That is seemingly what those officers did. I stand by assertion that abusing citizens of any age, ethnicity or gender is wrong ! Period. I raised two children in the city of Detroit. Today they both are educated, decent members of society. I think I have a right to state what I believe although it may differ from your opinion. As I said in the earlier post. No way in the hell would I sit still and allow anyone to treat my kid in that manner. PERIOD!

Spring, I don't agree that DPS should turn over the schools to all charters. That's not the answer. Parents, good parents, are the answer.

And I couldn't agree with you more in supporting "good" DPS police officers 150%.

Ceelo2, I agree you do have a right to state your opinion, we all do even when we don't agree. Giving our opinions is the whole purpose of this blog. You should stand by what you believe in, and there is a line that law officials should not cross, because we are all humen beings. No Ceelo2 I don't believe that all teens are bad, that's why I started a non-profit organization 16 years ago and I work with teens during the summers; although they keep in touch with me throughout the year. We am not grant funded, I do what I do through the grace of God. We teach them conflict resolution skills, assist them in finding summer employment and teach them about responsibility and how to achieve their dreams. Some have graduated from college and some choose the streets. And yes sometimes it can be frustrating because we know that we can't save them all. Because no matter what we teach them for the few hours that they are with us, some of them face really strong challenges at home and in the streets. Just for the record my mom and dad raised ten of us in Detroit and we are educated, productive members of society as well. However, it is not the same world that it was when we came up.

If parents did a better job of parenting their children you would have much less problems. They teach their kids that nobody has the right to tell them what to do in any given situation. Blame the PARENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most parents teach their kids those kind of values. Our civilized society needs more parents to do the same.

Bob Thompson's attempt to donate was not called racist....it was called an attempt to take over public school and create charter schools. Bob Thompson is no different than anyone else who is seeking to donate a large sum of money...the question of "what is the ulterior" is going to come up just as you would want to know who is donating to whom's campaign. Follow the money!

I attended DPS in the late 70's/early 80's graduating in 1981. Even then the school system was behind in education - whether it was because my parents made us do extra work that kept us ahead of the class or shared books, lack of books, supplies, etc. It was my parents decision to bring more to the table at home than what was being given in school. We didn't have police officers patroling schools -- there were still some truant officers.

Again...what's wrong with our children - adults are. We got our behinds paddled even AFTER laws were changed regarding "abuse". Spare the rod and spoil the child...even the Bible says 'Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.' (Prov 23:13, 14)
