Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez has said it best. He said that Iraq is a complete nightmare. I hate to say it...Well, duh!!!! Actually, I enjoyed saying that, it's rather cathartic. It is so obvious that our government did not learn from the lessons of Vietnam. Our politicians, who are mostly lawyers, have no idea about running a military campaign.  They like to assert their opinions, but guess what, they suck. Their incompetence is getting our boys and girls killed, not to include the countless lives of innocent Iraqi civilians. As a former soldier, I understand that there will always collateral damage, but come on, this is completely unnceccesary. Lt. Gen. Sanchez was not given his 4th star, forcing him into retirement because of the Abu Ghraib prison snafu. He was just a puppet of the administration, and did what he was ordered to do. I'm not an advocate or torture, but I do understand that physical coercion is tantamount to protecting our troops. If the military commanders were allowed to conduct the war their way, we would have been finished sooner, and with less casualties.

I too am a vet.
I amen what you say.

Wars fought from Washington are not won.
Limited wars are not won.
Guerilla wars are not won.
Police-action-arbitrator wars are not won.
Wars without clear goals are not won.
Wars not backed by, and clearly explained to, the people are not won.

They only get our boys and girls killed, chewed up, and our country hated.

Gen. Powell was a commander who learned from the downfall of Vietnam. When he was Chaiman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he dictated to Bush Sr, that we must use over whelming force to combat Saddam's Army and drive him from Kuwait. It worked!!!! My question to the current President, is why didn't you do the same?

Commanders are just that.....they are commanders who decide how to fight a war. LET THEM DO THEIR JOB!!!!!

The irony of Iraq is, we already won the war. We deposed Saddam and got new elections and a new government in Iraq - if that's not winning a war, then we lost in Germany in the 1940s, I guess. Our continued occupation has made our troops targets for anti-occupations Iraqis of all stripes. More of our troops are dying from roadside bombs than from shootouts with "insurgents". It's time we wised up and pulled our troops out. With its oil money, Iraq can afford private security such as Blackwater and the like if they need it.

peechmae,
I see you are misinformed. IRAQ did not start ANYTHING with us. 19 criminals flew airplanes into the twin towers in New York, and the Pentagon - 15 were Saudis, NOT ONE OF THEM WAS FROM IRAQ. Iraq has never in its history attacked the United States. The people of this country are being LIED TO by the Bush administration and a bunch of other tools (Giuliani 1st among them) about this. Over 4000 of our brave soldiers are dead, over 655,000 Iraqis -- and it has all been a big LIE. Osama bin Laden is ecstatic because he can use our occupation of Iraq as a recruiting tool. He has said he will bankrupt the US in these Middle Eastern wars, as they did the Soviets in Afghanistan...and he's starting to get close to that, as we owe over $2.7 TRILLION to Communist China!! We are LESS SAFE economically, politically, socially and militarily as a result of this Iraq war, while Blackwater and Halliburton are making BILLIONS. Can't you see what is really going on?

I'm a veteran of the Army and a die hard libertarian. I am really tired to see the moral fabric of this country being torn to shreds by blow hard elitists who make careers out of going to Washington suppossedly for the people. I have an interest in all things history and politics. I live in Acworth with my wife Simone, who is from Brazil. We've been married 2 years and plan to be married many more.
