HOW DO WE CLASS MONORITIES. IS IT GENDER? IS IT WHITE ,BLACK, ETC.OR IS IT FRENCH,GERMAN,ENGLISH,OR SPANISH,ETC? IS IT RICH,MIDDLE CLASS,OR POOR.HOW I FORGOT THERE IS NO MIDDLE CLASS ANY MORE.IT IS RICH OR POOR? IS IT IF YOU LIVE IN THE CITY,SUFFORK OR AND OTHER STATE AND CITY JOBS? SO HOW DOES IT WORK? HOW MAMY KIDS YOU HAVE OR HOW MUCH YOU MAKE OR IS IT ALL OF THE ABOVE?  ALL I KNOW I HAVE 4 KIDS, I PAY TAXES ON LONG ISLAND, I WORK 2 JOBS, MY WIFE WORKS PART TIME. TO ALL THE PARENTS OUT THERE, WHERE DO WE START?!?!. WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? SINCE WHEN DO NUMERICAL TEST SCORES HAVE A RACE OR NATIONALITY. THAT IS REASON WHY WE HAVE THESE TESTS. TO SEE WHO IS BEST QUALIFIED FOR THE POSTION. ALSO, WHY DO YOU HAVE TO STATE YOUR RACE OR NATIONALITY WHEN YOU FILL OUT AN APPLICATION? IT SHOULD ONLY ASK IF YOUR A UNITED STATES CITIZEN OR NOT. I THOUGHT AMERICANS WERE ONE FOR ALL AND ALL FOR ONE. WHY SHOULD SOME PEOPLE GET SPECIAL PREFERENCES OVER OTHERS? IT JUST ISN'T CORRECT. THERE SHOULD BE NO SPECIAL TREATMENTS AND NO SPECIAL PREFERENCES GIVEN TO PEOPLE. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY TO ADVANCE IN THIS COUNTRY, YOU JUST HAVE TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE.

I'm with ya bro on this one, should it matter? No it shouldn't. I'll give you MY example. I'm a writer down here in Houston and I sent my work out all over the country when I first started and wow did I get it back fast, the problem, I used my real name.
At the same time I was a telemarketer and my pay depended on my leads and with a mexican name calling white businesses i wasn't getting anywhere so i trying leaving the name Michael and my call backs went through the roof. I tried it with my writing and WOW it worked again. Now I'm the same guy writing the same stuff but the BIG DOGS only responded based on my name, not my work. It's a very sad fact of life that we are forced to live with.

Washington loves statistics that can be read in many different ways. That's why you have to put down your race on a form when you apply for a job.

The only time I would be concerned is when people that think, care, and do for themselves and others are in a minority.

With all this stuff going on now, I looked back in history when it began. In the Christian Bible, Genesis I - God creates Earth, Genesis II - God creates mankind, Genesis III - Cain slews is brother, Abel over jealousy and greed.
How far have we come in 2000 years?

If you have to fill in those spots - Hair-yes, eyes-yes, sex- yes. You ARE filling in those spots. Bet you may not get the job - wonder why!

Oh, I would be concerned if people with a sense of humor were in the minority.

In the US, we use the term "minorities" to refer to groups of people with a similar racial background who do not represent the majority of citizens in America. This is an enormously complex subject and should not be trivialized in any way, despite what may seem obvious or ridiculous. As far as any "special treatment," that should be discussed with specific facts related to a specific event. One need only study American history to see how badly minorities such as Africans, American Indians, Asians and Hispanics were treated. They were butchered, enslaved, raped, etc, with no negative action taken against those in the majority who participated in such heinous acts. While there may be some programs and services that give some advantages to minorities, those in the majority should not feel slighted. Life is not fair and it does stink to be in the middle class, but that's just one of the challenges many of us must face. It beats the heck out of being chained, whipped and raped!

Daniel, Happy Birthday, sorry the wishes are a little late.

Angel - I would love to fill in the boxes differently to see what would happen. I have in the past left some offensive ones blank and was given the job anyway.

For one job, I was asked to come in to interview for a position because the owner thought I was black, when I got to the office he even said that he only asked me to come in to interview because he thought I was black - I happen to be what an Italian-American - I was hired anyway. By the way, if you haven't guessed the owner happened to be a black man. I was there 3-1/2 years. All the others before me did not last more than 6-months....

That's funny. I got hired once because they thought I was Italian. People can be strange that way. Thanks for the birthday wish!

No one has ever had "a fair chance to advance in this country." People are constantly selected based on addresses, names, complexions, age, gender etc., merit comes in much later. The same way "minorites" have accepted that they will have to do above and beyond what someone who is not considered a minority will have to do, is the same way people have to accept the decision someone makes to give that "minority" "special treatment and preferences" if they choose to do so...or not. None of this is correct. That's why it's called life and not heaven, or a fairy tale. There are going to be ups and downs, things that are weird and unfair. Initiative will only get you so far...money, power and respect...allies...are needed to get ahead in this country.

I'm so glad that Pop had friends in so many different cultures come to our home. I never could or can "see" what difference color makes one person better than another - words/actions make the difference. Good Lord! I could have missed out on some wonderful experiences not only at home but in different countries and my circle of friends would not be as large. Only when one culture becomes perfect, with no anger, jealousy, hurt, greed, it is then that I may rethink how I feel.

I remember the time when there was a religion that did not permit its followers to read or hear ANYTHING from another religion. That has changed.

Right now, how many people are pure Italian, French,Finn, German or Irish any longer? That no longer matters to most.

There were clubs, jobs only for women and others for men - that has changed. Even at parties then, the men grouped together and the women did the same.

When a man was explaining to me that he was a failure because his grandparents were persecuted in this country, I asked him when
was the last time he looked for a job. He said he did TWICE and they didn't meet HIS demands.
Amazing! Minority or not, I cannot think of anyone who is successful without working for it. And working hard. Not giving up or using excuses.

We have come a long way in so many ways including acceptance. Smile, if others from another world would invade our planet, we certainly would realize we are of One culture, we are all Earthlings.

AngelRuby - you are so right - actions speak louder than words - and things have changed for the good in many instances - and, the world is as the world has always been not perfect. I was brought up to respect people as people and I truly trust and believe that I do. We had a lot of friends from different backgrounds and I was brought up to respect everyone and to apprecite everyone. Remember this is a free country, free to practice your faith, politics, heritage, etc. It shoud not be so free as to pay for everyone when they come here, but the basic freedom to live the way they want is within everyone's grasp. And, it is your right to live the way you want or need to. I had to fight with the college my daughter was in to get her the classes she needed. Yet the ones the seats were saved for were never ever even in the classroom.... You can go where you want, do almost anything you want, work at almost anything you want if you have what it takes. After all that is why others come here from their countries because of some sort of persecution. The opportunities are here you just have to go for them....

I THINK PEOPLE THEMSELF THINK THEY ARE A MINORITE BECAUSE THEY HAD NO LUCK FINING A JOB ETC.GOVERNAMENT STARTED ALL OF THIS WITH SPECIAL EVENTS OR CLASSES FOR SCHOOL ETC. AND PEOPLE ARE JUMPING ON IT.ANGLERUBY YOU ARE RIGHT IF YOU WORK FOR SOMETHING YOU WILL GET IT.JUST LIKE YOUR DAD, MY DAD AS FRIEND FROM ALL CULTURES AND THAT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENT.

A minority I would like to see - people who rely on others for their survival - the society parasites.

The majority I would like to see - the ones who say to that minority the word "No" - we will NOT give you handouts but will show you how YOU can be productive and support yourself and our country.

Another minority I would like to see - enablers!

Luke - I take issue with "having" to answer any of those questions. We are who we are and should be judged on the work we do, remember you can not judge a book by it's cover. I attended a seminar once with regard to Human Resources and the new employee....well, let me tell you the uproar that the new forms with all the little boxes to check caused. The people in attendance were of different ethnic backrounds and the majority of the audience in no way appreciated being categorized. I must amend that 99% of the audience was up in arms. I personally do not appreciate it and I do not feel it is right, or correct for any reason. I don't care if the government likes it or not. We should not be put into little boxes like different color pegs - for any reason. Sorry, but that is just my opinion.
