On 5/2/2008 I and two co workers were shopping in Old Navy located on 5135 Peachtree Parkway #910, Norcross, GA 30092. We left the store and were immediately stopped by Gwinnett County police officers who told us that we had been identified for shop lifting. There were 6 police officers and 1 Sergeant who searched us outside the store. The store manager and logistics manager took over 30 minutes to come outside without the courtesy of handling this issue in the back office. We were told that a full description of me was given to mall security that later was advised by the logistics manager to call the police. 911 call was dispatched by the logistics manager and mall security who then dispatched Gwinnett County police. It was described that there was "A Gang of 9 Black females in the store trying to steal". This was an exact quote from the logistics manager. The police stopped 3 females including myself and searched out purses and personal possessions. No stolen items were ever taken nor found. The police then began to question the store management for the reason they called to the store for shop lifting. It was noted on more than one occasion from the logistics manager that this could possibly be a mistake because "there were so many Black people in the store earlier that day". The sergeant noted that this was a wrongful attempt to profile 3 African American women who had did nothing wrong. He had instructed the logistics manager that she has falsified a complaint and this was a serious issue. The logistics manager and general manager never offered an apology or the courtesy to handle this issue in private. We were publicly searched, questioned and accused without warrent. This occurred less than 2 miles from our place of employment, where we were observed in the public eye. I have been a card hold member of Gap for more than 7 years and I wish to no longer be associated with this establishment. The sergeant made it clear to press charges due to the nature of this un-ethical profile made by your company staff members. We were given a case # by the police as well as a number to receive the recording of the 911 tape made to the police. This incident occurred at aprox. 1:15pm, and we were not released until almost 2:45pm. My place of employment had to be called and noted that I was be detained by police for shop lifting accusations because I was late coming back to work from a lunch break. I made a call the Gap Headquarters Risk Management team who issued a complaint case number and I would like it noted as a consumer how we were racially profiled by your management staff.

No...You should complain, thats the only way that things will change. I have contacted GAP, INC, and will be filing a suit against them. Its sad that we have to deal with this in 2008...but if we dont do something, who will?

Frankly, comparing the two is ridiculous. You seem to be hinting that the whole notion of being offended and being violated is no big deal. I sense an air of sarcasm as if what you're really trying to say is that black people are always complaining about discrimination and that we shouldn't because it happens to white people, too. Is that right?

Anyone who is discriminated against should complain and it doesn't matter what color his/her skin color or his/her nationality.

My heart goes out to you. I could not imagine being publicly searched and humiliated because obviously 'all black people look alike.' It doesn't help that it was near your job, the place where you make your livelihood and make an honest living to support yourself and your family. The fact that this was such a public spectacle is what gets me most of all.

I hope you sue them and I hope you win. A message needs to be sent. And no better time like the present.

Thanks to all that get the heart of the issue..it was a racially motivated wrongful act. Period!

Dustoff529- I know my rights- which is why im pursuing this issue even further, however Im interested in your facts that "high percentage of theft crimes are committed by blacks" ??? Is this an assumption of yours? Your reply was very interesting to say the least...

@ dustoff529:

WHAT? You ARE joking, right? You obviously didn't read the post. It was obviously about race. Does the description "A Gang of 9 Black females in the store trying to steal" or "there were so many black people in the story today" mean ANYTHING to you?

Aside from that, people who have no history of being accosted by the police don't usually know all of their rights until after the fact. In the moment, you do what you're told because we've all seen a dozen cases where when you don't, regardless of what your real rights are, the perception and the general rule is that you obey authority or pay a hefty price for it.

The fact that you can attribute that kind of humiliation to the victim's lack of knowledge regarding criminal activity and what her rights would be is silly and disheartening. That's like blaming a rape victim for being raped because 'she should've known not to wear a shirt he could see through to tempt him like that.'

Dustoff529- you may have your own opinion concerning this matter, thats why its a blog- not a political race for office! I and many others don't agree with you..but thats fine. Just one questions..what is your ethnic background?

I agree with you 100% FaithTempo, but we have to live in a world with people who say and act according to dustoff...when did my initial blog turn into his outlet to rage his inner thoughts of ignorance? If I had my choice he would be blocked! Thanks again for your support. This is not a blame game, this is about standing up for what is right.
