Was anyone else irritated at Patty Labelle's version of the National Anthem this evening? She not only got the words wrong (which is pitiful), but she changed the tune drastically and added two extra words.
Why can't the National Anthem just be left alone--it's perfect the way it is.

The following is a transcript of a segment I did for Fox Philadelphia, for their Eagles/Falcons pre-game show on Sunday. They wanted an Atlanta perspective about Sunday's game.
What a difference a year makes for the falcons. After everything that went wrong in 2007 including the Michael Vick fiasco, head coach Bobby Petrino exiting before the season was over, and of course the 4-and-12 record, Falcons fans expectations for this season were at an all-time low...and that's saying something when you think about the history of this franchise.
Even when the Falcons got off to a decent start...fans were quick to point out that their first two wins were against below average teams, Detroit and Kansas City. but when they beat Green Bay on the road in week five, the football fans in Atlanta began to take notice, and when they came from behind in the final eleven seconds to beat the Chicago Bears two weeks ago, the football fans in Atlanta began to believe.
Under first year head coach Mike Smith, the atmosphere and the general mood of this team is so much more positive than in recent years, and it's showing in the results as the Falcons have already equaled their win total for all of last season.
Rookie quarterback Matt Ryan is well on his way to owning this town. The Philadelphia area native is excited about returning home to take on the Eagles in front of a lot of friends and family. And he is perhaps even more excited about the fact that he won't have to get tickets for most of them because they are already Eagles season ticket holders.
Ryan struggled in week two against a fast Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense, when he was sacked four times...so he could struggle against a blitzing Eagles defensive unit, but he has also shown the ability to learn and improve every week. He's only been sacked three times since.
A big key to this game will be how the Falcons running back tandem of Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood fare against that Eagles 'D'. The better the run game, the more that helps the rookie quarterback. And how this team, that is loaded with young players, responds to playing on the road in a tough place like Philadelphia.
The Eagles are heavily favored but folks around here expect this to be a close game.

From run Lindsay, run to hobnail boots and beyond, there will never be another Larry Munson. Love his style or not, much like Skip Caray, it is one of a kind. For Bulldogs fans, Munson is the soundtrack to their beloved team, and it will never sound the same without him.
Okay Dawgs fans, this is your chance to reminisce about Larry the Legend, and share your favorite Munson story with the world. If you're a UGA fan without a Munson story, you haven't been paying attention. In fact, I'd have to question whether you are really a UGA fan at all.
How will your game day experience and routine change without Munson on the radio?
Good luck to Scott Howard and Eric Zeier trying to fill those hobnail boots in the broadcasting booth. They are both talented and beloved in Athens and beyond, but following Munson will be the tallest of tasks.

Does anyone know of any small fishing pond around Atlanta , really looking for areas between Stone Mountain to Athens. Have been to Tribble Mill and Rhodes Jordan parks in Gwinnett, planning on going down the Chattahoochee this week. Has anyone fished at Charlie Elliot wildlife center off I-20, if you have do you know if they have restriction on motors. Anyone interested in fishing reports on favorite lakes.Rhodes Jordan Park in Lawrenceville is a great small lake ,bank fishing only but have seen several good size bass caught, mostly crappie , best bait for them are yellow/white or pink/white jigs or worms.Tribblemill park near Grayson one good size and one smaller lake ,can have small boat trolling motor only, best fishing east of boat ramp, I have better luck trolling using small crankbait, but have used different color jigs, watch the old timers that are there everyday they know the spots.Chattahoochee my favorite is Abbotts Bridge launch and go north to the old metal brige near Suwannee creek shut off motor and drift back, what scenry, trout fishing good when they stock, use yellow or gray rooster tail lures for bait ,sometimes will hit on brown rooster tails too. The Chattahoochee is the greatest for a getaway in metro Atlanta.

The Georgia Bulldogs went into the season ranked number one. They whipped their opening day opponent 45-to-21. Now as they head into week two, they have fallen to number two. And that is not necessarily a bad thing.
The Dawgs are really kind of enjoying the best of both worlds. They got to bask in the notoriety of being ranked number one before the season began. Thanks to a blowout win by USC over Virginia, UGA lost that coveted top ranking. Also gone in the transaction, the pressure and bulls eye that come with being ranked number one.
This doesn't mean that the Dawgs should relax this weekend against Central Michigan, who would be thrilled to knock off any Southeastern Conference team. It simply means that psychologically, beating the number two team in the country pales in comparison to knocking off number one. In other words, the target has not been removed from their backs, but it is considerably smaller than it was a week ago.
The demotion may shrink the size of the target on their backs, but it will likely have the opposite effect on the chip on their shoulders. The players have subscribed to the company line about how little stock they put in pre-season polls. They have even used the old line about being ranked number one at the end of the season rather than at the beginning. But don't forget, these are competitive, athletic 18-to-24 year olds who have been, for lack of a better word, dissed.
The demotion has given them a little extra motivation to prove that they deserved the pre-season ranking, and to earn it back.
Motivation can be a powerful tool.

Atlanta television won't be the same without Bill Hartman.
I'm a 40 year old Atlanta native. Hartman has been on the air in my hometown for 35 years. I grew up watching his sports reports on channel 5. I still try to catch his work on channel 2.
I first met Hartman at a youth league basketball game at Briarlake Baptist Church in 1991. He was coaching. I was a referee.
I was fresh out of college with a broadcast journalism degree and no job. After the game, I introduced myself to him only to find out that his real life personality was exactly like the one that I had watched on television for years. I thought to myself, wow, Bill Hartman is a really good guy. At the time I had no idea how good, or that we would eventually become co-workers and more importantly, friends.
After some good natured ribbing about some of my questionable calls during the game, he gave me some advice that literally changed the direction of my life.
I had completed my college degree without doing an internship. In hindsight, that wasn't very bright (and that is a message I preach to broadcast hopefuls to this day). Anyway, Hartman suggested I do an internship working alongside him at WAGA-TV. The only problem, I was no longer a college student. To make a long story short, (too late for that, huh?) Bill suggested that I become a student again to be eligible for the internship, I took his advice and the rest is history.
The year was 1992, and I spent the summer interning at the station that is now known as Fox5 (we were a CBS affiliate back then). I worked a lot of long weekend days with Hartman and the late sports producer Ron Jenkins (R.I.P.). It was that summer that officially convinced me that this is what I wanted to do for a living.
In the summer of 1992, the Atlanta Braves were the deal. Fresh off of their worst to first season of 1991 where they lost the World Series to the Minnesota Twins in seven games, the Braves were in the midst of winning their second of 14 straight division titles. What a time to be in this city, and what a time to be a sports intern. Hartman would always remind me of that, saying things like "can you believe you are in the Braves locker room moments after the biggest play in Atlanta sports history?" (Remember Sid Bream beating the throw to the plate to beat the Pirates in the 1992 NLCS to send the Braves to their second straight World Series?) Or he might say, "what do you think your friends are doing right now?"
For an Atlanta native like myself, I was living a dream and Hartman was playing a major role.
When my summer internship came to an end, I continued to work alongside Hartman at WAGA for about a year on a free lance basis. I was basically a sports production assistant, but I ultimately wanted to be on the air.
Eventually, my services were no longer needed at WAGA, but my relationship with Hartman never changed. I kept in touch with him while I continued to look for an elusive on air sports job. More importantly, he took the time to keep up with me.
Skip ahead to 1997, I was doing some free lance television work, but I had yet to land that full-time sportscaster job. I was on a surfing vacation in Puerto Rico when Hartman tracked me down to let me know about an opening for a weekend sports anchor at a station in Savannah.
When I got home, I put on a suit, grabbed a resume tape and got in the car to head to WTOC-TV in Savannah. When I arrived, they told me that they were about to hire someone, but they would give me the courtesy of an informal interview since I made the long drive down. For some reason, they decided to hire me, and to this day I can't thank Hartman enough for taking the time to make that call to a former intern.
Eventually, my career came full circle when I was able to come back to WAGA as a sportscaster in November of 1998. Outside of my family, Hartman was the first person I called when I got the job. By this time, Hartman had already moved on to WSB, but he was genuinely excited for me to make it back to my hometown as a sportscaster. For the last 10 years, I have enjoyed working in this market alongside Hartman, albeit as competitors. Given our history, there is something very comforting about going out on a story and catching up with Bill, or grabbing lunch after a Falcons practice. I will miss that.
Bill Hartman played a huge role in me getting to where I am in my career, and for that I thank him. Without the early advice and that fateful phone call, who knows where I would be or what I would be doing for a living.
Bill congratulations for surviving 35 years in this crazy profession. Here's wishing you at least 35 more years of relaxing, traveling, and playing golf. You deserve it.

WE'VE GOT SOME BREAKING SPORTS NEWS TO TELL YOU ABOUT.
I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH A HAWKS OFFICIAL HAS JUST CONFIRMED FOR ME THAT THE TEAM HAS MATCHED THE OFFER MADE TO JOSH SMITH BY THE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES..
IN SHORT, J-SMOOV WILL REMAIN A HAWK..
FURTHERMORE.. HE'S GETTING A BIG BUMP IN PAY.
BY MATCHING THE GRIZZLIES' OFFER.. JOSH WILL BE GETTING ABOUT $58-MILLION OVER FIVE YEARS.. NOT BAD FOR A MCEACHERN HIGH SCHOOL ALUM.
THE LOSS OF SMITH WOULD HAVE BEEN DEVASTATING TO A FAN BASE THAT HAS BEEN ASKED TO BE PATIENT OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
2004 DRAFT-MATE JOSH CHILDRESS HAD ALREADY BOLTED FOR GREECE.
SMITH.. WAS ARGUABLY THE MOST MARKETABLE ON THE TEAM... WHICH SEEKS TO MAKE A RETURN TRIP TO THE PLAYOFFS.
ONCE AGAIN.. THE HAWKS HAVE BELLIED UP TO THE BAR.. AND MATCHED THE MEMPHIS OFFER TO JOSH SMITH. HE WILL BE IN A HAWKS UNIFORM THIS SEASON!!!

HAVING ALREADY LOST JOSH CHILDRESS TO GREECE.. THE HAWKS NOW APPEAR IN BIG DANGER OF LOSING JOSH SMITH!
J-SMOOV HAS SIGNED AN OFFER SHEET FROM THE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES WORTH 58-MILLION OVER FIVE YEARS!
THE HAWKS NOW HAVE SEVEN DAYS TO MATCH THAT OFFER!
THIS IS A BAD-BAD, LOSE-LOSE SITUATION FOR HAWKS... AND THEY HAVE THEMSELVES TO BLAME.
MATCH AND KEEP JOSH SMITH?, AND THEY WILL RETAIN A DISGRUNTLED PLAYER, WHO OBVIOUSLY DOESN'T WANT TO REMAIN WITH THE TEAM.
BUT IF THEY DON'T MATCH THE GRIZZLIES' OFFER, THEY WILL SUFFER THE WRATH OF A FRUSTRATED FAN BASE THAT FOR YEARS HAD BEEN ASKED TO BE PATIENT WHILE THE TEAM REBUILDS---AND ONLY RECENTLY SNUCK INTO THE PLAYOFFS AFTER A NINE-YEAR ABSENCE!!!
GET THIS... THEY HAD NOTHING ELSE TO DO THIS OFF-SEASON!!!
THERE WERE NO DRAFT PICKS TO PICK. "THE" ADMITTED PRIORITY THIS OFFSEASON WAS TO SIGN SMITH AND CHILDRESS.
ONE HAS ALREADY FLOWN THE COUP. THE OTHER IS FLAPPING HIS WINGS AND IS READY TO FLY!
FURTHERMORE, THEY HAVE ALSO FAILED TO PICK UP A KEY FREE AGENT.
OWNERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT HAVE SHAMEFULLY FLUSHED AWAY THE GOODWILL BUILT UP IN THAT PLAYOFF APPEARANCE.
THAT'S MY OPINION. I'LL BE INTERESTED TO READ YOURS.
AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE THRASHERS!

Anyone that grew up pulling for the Braves, probably has a favorite Skip Caray story or favorite Skip Caray call. He was the unique voice of the Braves for 33 seasons, and it will never be the same without him.
What is your favorite Skip story or call.
A few of mine are as follows...
"well, it looks like we've reached the bottom of another fifth."
"the bases are loaded, and I wish I was..."
"apparently they are giving away free cheetahs at the ballpark tonight."
"a fan from ________ goes home with a souvenir..."
"a chopper to chipper"
"an inauspicious start to the ___ inning."
"Braves win, Braves win, Braves win, Braves win."
"...so long everybody."
This is by no means a complete list and only off the top of my head. Help me out with some other great Skip Caray memories.

I am a 59yo man who grew a Cardinal fan. When I was 8 or 9 I'd carry sneak my transistor radio in to my bed and listen to Harry Caray. I thought I had heard the best until I heard Skip Caray announce a Braves game or a Hawks game or even a Missouri tigers game. I was truly saddened by the news of his death, in ways that surprised me. I feel like I lost a member of the family. Skip, this Bud's for you.
