lots of people are talking about the two tragic deaths of kids locked in hot cars. (one in northwest harris county yesterday, and one in webster on wednesday.) please please talk about what has happened.  the more people talk about it the more people will be aware enough to not let it happen to them.

how could someone forget?? i don't know the circumstanced behind these two incidents, but i have read a few of the heartbreaking stories online.  in one case a dad of a 6 month old forgot to take his child to daycare because he was forced to take a big construction detour and then got a distracting cell phone call. in another, a grandfather forgot about the child because he was preoccupied by his new diagnosis of leukemia.

in 1990, about 5 children died in hot cars. that number has steadily climbed, and in 2005 more than 40 kids died in hot cars! we say our lives have gotten crazy busy? well i guess so. this seems to be evidence.

i know we all think this couldn't happen to us, BUT just to make sure, here are a few things you can do or put in your routine that will be added safety.

-- be cautious about any changes in your life or your routine (how many times have you tried to remember one more thing in your morning routine, only to forget something else. or if a major event happens to you or your family, being mad or sad has a way of zeroing out your brain.)

-- have the person dropping off your child call you -- or you call them to make sure your child got there.

--have checks/balances with daycare (this is great for new parents. have the daycare call if you infant doesn't show by a certain time. and promise to call them if your baby won't be there that day.)

-- put a large baby toy on your key ring to remind you

-- slow down, have a checklist when leaving your car

-- get an car seat safety sensor (and unfortunately these are big sellers because no one think it will happen to them.)

i could not find any child safety seat sensor on the babiesrus web site. that surprised me... but here's a company that sells a few different types of safety sensors... www.babyalert.info.  another blogger, shelbo423, has told us about www.securebaby.com which sells a huge number of safety systems. thank you for that! (fyi i have scoured that site and not seen any system specifically designed for car seats. but the "loc8tor plus" looks multi-functional.)

my heart goes out to the families of these little boys, 3 and 4 years old. if you know someone with babies or toddlers.. please tell them about these sad events so it doesn't happen to them.

Is there any way that you could do a couple of segments on the news to inform viewers of this? Including the suggestions that PBMom made about taking pictures, and calling the police?

In addition to the general education, maybe if people knew they had options, they would get involved and lives could be saved....

This is so Cool!!!! I called and talked to the owner of Secure Baby,a mother of 3 herself... she opened this business 4 years ago so she could stay home with her kids, now it has grown into a very sucessful Child Safety Business.
I told her about the stories and that we had recognized them on the blog. She and her husband were very thankful and have agreed to give the My Fox Houston Community

$5.00 off any purchase of $20.00 or more when we enter the Promo Code "MYFOXHOUSTON" in the promo box at checkout...

I love saving money on things I need to get anyway. Thank you Secure Baby! I also saw that you had several good ratings on google checkout too!

They said the promo code will be active within the hour. They are located in Indiana, so shipping to Houston takes about 3-4 days. they have free shipping to on some of their hogher cost things. They said if you try to use it before it is active, or if you are not sure the discount was shown just e-mail them at info@securebaby.com and mention the My Fox Houston they will be sure you get it!

high flyer,
i actually did do several stories on this this morning. three out of the four segments i did had information on preventing this kind of accident. i love what pbmom said... but that is a message to the general public about paying attention to who is in those parked cars. my focus this morning was on fixing adult "forgetfulness." i am glad you think this is helpful information. we are taking notice how many people care about this issue.

and shelbo, this is -very- cool! thank you to you and to secure baby. i'm going to let our web adminstrator know about this. i do think this is a first for myfoxhouston.com! (it's giving me ideas.....)

They also said that now that they are aware of the child seat alarms they will be looking in to adding them as an option to their products soon.

oh i don't know.. i just love hearing of myfoxhouston as a promo code. makes me wonder if other companies would do the same thing if the situation fit. yes... to save money or to make life easier. it's just an option i hadn't considered. of course i would first check with my bosses before presenting that as an idea to anyone.

you should offer a My Fox Houston picks list, with links for the companies you list as offering products that fit your stories or that will help the community. If you do be sure to put Secure Baby on there!I bet you can get the logo's from the companies and make it a really nice page. Plus one stop shopping for us. Heck, we are already here on the blog! LOL.

We have a friend and co-worker that is forgetful. When he and his wife had a child we would check his car for him when he got to work. The baby? Now 10.

it takes a village to raise a child...

I have the solution. Make it legal to put that dang car seat in the front. Problem solved.

That will not solve anything I-RIGHT. Most forget about the child because the child is not making any noise. Some have gotten someplace, with the kid in the front seat, but because of distractions they forgot the kid was even thier. We all get a one track mind from time to time.
I myself have forgotten and I still beat myself up over it. Granted nothing happened but still, the WHAT IF still scares me to death.

I think its everyones resp. to look out for the kids. I notice alot of folks that ignore it and dont wanna get involved. As adults aren't we supposed to watch for things like this?

Shelbo423: That was great about the discount. I agree with you, it does take a village and people need to stop being afraid to speak up. We can't go around being apathetic anymore. Look at what it has done to this country.

TWO CHILDREN DEAD IN TWO DAYS OF THE SAME THING ? SOUNDS LIKE MORE THAN A COINCIDENCE . THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY DISTURBING TREND THAT PEOPLE TAKE CHANCES IN LEAVING THEIR CHILDREN IN CARS THAT IN A FEW MINUTES TURN INTO OVENS ! I KNOW FIRST HAND ABOUT HOW HOT IT GETS IN A CAR BECAUSE I AM IN & OUT OF THEM BECAUSE OF MY JOB ON A CAR LOT .THEY GET HOT AS HE** INSIDE . LOVE YOUR KIDS & CARE FOR THEM IF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE & CLAIM THEM ...

Most the time I agree with Pm Mom but not this time. It doesn't take a Village it takes a smart aware parent to raise a child . I'm so tired of kids having babies that have No Business having children. Because they are barely out of diapers themselves.and let their children do what ever they want as will as forget them in cars. I say press charges on them for Murder.

I cannot fathom how a person can forget that a child is in the car. Weren't those children 2 and 3? At that age, they are chatty and active. How can someone forget? It takes a seriously self-absorbed person to leave their child behind like that.

I left my wife in the car once. When I got back she was gone. Another problem solved.

Come on people!!! A parent forgets their child is in the car????? I'm all for child safety (car locks, outlet plugs, safety gates, etc). I have two grown children. No matter what is going on in your adult life, when you became a parent, your child takes precedence over any and everything. People are concentrating on devices that cost money to remind parents they have children in their car. Who reminds the parent to not forget the reminder? Your child is dead. You, the parent, should be in jail. This to many may sound callous, but the death of a child by neglect is almost unforgivable.

shelbo423

I think we all have said that parents that are not paying attention to their children wouldn't use the devices anyway, but for the rest of us it is a nice help. I had a good friend of mine who's 4 year old ran and jumped in the pool while her mother went to the rest room, she didn't even hear her daughter leave the house, let alone reliazed she knew how to work the dead bolt...she left the restroom and went to the kitchen to finish the morning dishes and looked up to see her her baby girl holding on to the side of the pool in the deep end!!! (Thankfully she was fine, just in big trouble)the door alarm, or pool alarm, or water turtle alarm would have been great for this situation. My friend says it had to Have been God taking care of her, because even if she would have finished in the restroom and not saw her daughter by the television, she could have easily assumed she was just playing in her room, or trying to hide from her since hide and go seek is a house hold favorite...outside and in the pool would have not even crossed her mind! To this day she says she thanks hevan for dirty dishes. I know the alarms and monitors don't replace good parenting, but accidents do happen, even to good parents...I know we are talking about irresponsibility here, but all I am saying is that an extra set of eyes and ears (or alarms) can be helpful. All I am saying is that in todays world with todays technologies there should be less of a chance that these accidents happen...and yes they do cost money, but at least there are companies out there to provide these products. No one would say the
