andrea's spare time

we just did our last family camping trip for the summer... spend 5 nights in a galveston campground right along the beach. i have to say i've never enjoyed the island more than i did this weekend. the weather was great, and the water was the prettiest i had ever seen it. (maybe we should visit in july more often.) the water was beautiful green... very warm and pretty clear. there were people fishing all along the sandbar... standing in chest-deep water. they told us they were fishing for sea trout which come close to shore when the water gets warm.

swimming out there was so much fun! we were swimming in the middle of huge schools of smaller fish. (i'm sure that's why the bigger fish were there.) we had great time watching the bait fish appear through the waves. then they did something i'd never seen before.  the schools jumped out of the water hundreds at a time...  traveling over the top of the water for several seconds. what a sit e to see!   now i did keep in mind that there could be large predators under the water pushing them up. my husband and i kept a watch out, but never said the word s-h-a-r-k in front of our kids. that would have freaked them out.

so anyway...  we got back yesterday, hadn't been in our driveway 25 minutes before the station calls me. our dear ruben dominguez told me to come in early this morning to do my lives in galveston! good grief... we should have never left. but coming back down was fine with me.

we take our kids to galveston frequently throughout the year but we're going to remember mid-july as one of the best times to come.

Did you ever get out there either before or right at sunrise? I'll pause for a minute so you can pick yourself up off the floor after laughing...stupid question to ask a mom, but hey, you never know.
I love Galley, always have been a Galley girl, and still hope to retire there someday. One of my favorite things to do is drive down there as early as possible..you see so much before the crowds get there. Dolphins in the 61st Street boat ramp lagoon, pelicans will walk right up to you and beg for food, (kinda intimidating esp when you're barefoot--they have one HECK of a tooth on the edge of their beak, did you know that?!) and, uh, my personal favorite..the hard core surfers strutting along the seawall.
Hey, wildlife is wildlife, right? :-}
My sisters told me that after being in the Carribean last year, that I wouldn't want to go to Galveston ever again..I am so HAPPY that they turned out to be WRONG!

well mik... funny thing is i didn't see the sunrise once on the camping trip, but i caught every moment of it this morning. i can also report that we watched every single sunset while we camped (and boy they were gorgeous) and we watched 3 moon rises. and the full(or nearly full) moon came up over the gulf the color of an orange every time. it was glorious. i think that was a first for my son, pete. we took him out for a couple late night walks so he could look for ghost crabs on the beach. he loved that. we blinded a few of them with flashlights but otherwise did them no harm.

YEAH , IT'S NOT THE BEST BEACH BUT ITS THE BEACH WE HERE IN HOUSTON HAVE ... I WENT WITH MY FAMILY LAST WEEKEND AND I SAW ALOT OF GULLS AND PIGEONS BUT NOT A SINGLE TROUT JUMPING OUT OF THE WATER OR ANY SMALL FISHES SWIMMING NEAR ME AS I WADED WAIST DEEP . NO JELLYFISH EITHER ... POLLUTION MUST BE UP .

I used to drive down to Galveston when I was single just because I craved the sea air. Something to do with negative ions in the air. Jeff and I went down there often before Patrick, and once by ourselves when we had someone to watch Patrick. It may not be the "prettiest" beach, but like Yahya said, It's the closest beach we have. But no camping for me. I didn't mind living on a boat for the summer, but to pitch a tent? No thanks.

Help me out, Andrea.

What stretch of beach is that for camping?

well keep in mind that when i say camping i mean in a trailer. tent camping went by the wayside when pete was born. we actually stayed at dellanera rv park which is owned/run by the city of galveston. down the road is of course galveston island st park... and the access to the beach is just as good at either park. when we're going for just a couple nights we go to the state park... but for longer stays we go to the r.v. park where we have full hook-ups. that way severo doesn't have to keep dumping the tanks every day (depending on how many people are staying with us.) so... pbmom... this isn't roughing it. ;-)

Thanks for the further explanation, Andrea.

Why not open a Fox26 bureau in Galveston, at least during the summer when the level of activity is higher there? It would give KRIV something the other media outlets don't have.

i have to agree w/you andrea. we also spent the wknd out in galveston this wknd too and it was great! we didn't do the camping thing, but we did get a hotel. we couldn't have asked for better weather. we also thought the water seemed clearer than in past years as well.

we took the dog with us and we all had a blast and came back feeling refreshed! it seems silly, almost borderline embarassing to say you had a GREAT time in galveston b/c i think it really gets discounted by most houstonians, but we really did!

cool! the island just had good vibes i guess! did you see the bait fish in the water?

we took our dogs too... two long haired doxies. i let them get filthy dirty/sandy a couple times like dogs love to do.. so they had a good time too!

yes, we saw all sorts of little schools of fish swimming around and many of them jumping out of the water too. we were even lucky enough to see a couple dolphins swimming near the surface of the water only a few yards out too! it was cool!

my dog (the one in my picture) was like a little piglet. she was filthy! she loved the water. she'd go out and swim, then come back to the shore and roll in the sand. it was her first time to the beach and i don't think it will be her last. she was hungover til yesterday and it takes a lot to wear that dog out!

That sounds nice there is another place down there I've heard about where you can ride horses on the beach well you can rent the horses(really). I been wanting to try that but can't remember where it was at I have to drive around to find it.

i love reporting the news... and the bright side of reporting before the sun comes up is that i can keep my cool! no melting in the houston heat at that hour. if you're up and about and tuning in, e-mail me a comment on the story i'm doing. we love to get your input. watkins@fox26.com
