the family of officer johnson was clearly disappointed that illegal immigrant juan quintero was not sentenced to death for murdering a houtson police officer.  jurors instead opted for life in prison finding mitigating circumstances... and saying quintero's life still has value and still deserves mercy.

what do you think? how many have very strong opinions and how many of you are on the fence? or perhaps you feel the public needs to support whatever the jury decides?

He should have gotten death. I don't want to pay for this man to live out the rest of his natural life in prison. It's disgusting to think that he has a better life in prison, than he had in mexico and that we are paying for it. It's doing this police officer (no matter his mistakes) to give this man life. He didn't value Officer Johnson's life, why should we value Quinteros?

I totally agree that this was a wrong decision. What was this jury thinking??? The bad thing is that the death penalty was the only real choice to ensure he was punished and would never do anything like this again. If we send him back to Mexico, he'd be back in a week. But supporting him, a place to live, 3 squares a day, medical, free education if he chooses, and the possiblilty of being released due to over-crowding (or, God forbid, another hurricane) just isn't right. And, we'll be paying for it twice, considering the family is going to sue the city.

OMG, this has got to be the worst decision by any jury anywhere.

I don't know if it's possible, but I'd like to see FOX interview some of the jurors, to see just what they were thinking.... I'm sure many people other than me would like to know what actually went into their decision.

I nearly puked when I heard, HIS LIFE HAS VALUE. Officer Johnson's life had the value, HE was serving the public for little money and because he wanted to help people.
This scum laughed and smiled when the verdic was handed down, he had no remorse. Now cause HE broke the law WE all have to pay for it. We have to pay for him to live cause we all know if he got sick we would have to pay for that too. He wants an education, heck, why not pay for that, learn a trade, sure we will pay for that. We treat illegals like GOLD and treat our own citizens like crap. There should not have even been an opition, DEATH for murdering a public servent. This jury just told law enforcement EVERYWHERE that they do not care for the lives of those that serve to protect them.

I think you may find that "life" will be shorter than expected while in the joint. The guards won't have any problem looking the other way, while a trustee drives home the shank.

You think Skyder? I was thinking that among the inmates, he'd be king S**t, considering his crime.

I heard an interview on 700 this morning with one of the 4 jurors who held out for the death penalty. Her name was Sally, a preachers wife, and she said that the four who wanted the death penalty were white. The ones who were on the fence were a mix of white and black. The ones for a life sentence were black and hispanic. So I guess in the eyes of their own people, browns and blacks can kill each other and its okay.
Wonder if a white guy killed a brown or black cop, if the black/brown jurors would have been as sympathetic? Hmmmm...
But you know what got me most of all? There were jurors who were at first for the death penalty, but were beaten down by the lifers. One changed her mind because 'she was tired and wanted to go home'. WEAK!
I saw an episode of Law & Order SVU last week were Robin Williams manipulated the sexual assault, suicides, of people in an experiment he called "sheep". His hypothesis was that we, Americans, have gotten so used to being told what to do, that we just follow any instructions, no matter how ridiculous, if it comes from someone with a forceful enough personality or an authority figure.
So this is what I have to say to you jurors who sentenced this murderer to life...
Baaa, baaa, baaa.

ONLY IF...

If like tragedy happened to the family of one of the 10 jurors who voted life (God forbid), they'd be screaming death penalty as well. What is that called...hypocrasy?

I dont think he will go into the general population. He will claim a fear for his life and get solitary and be on the good side of prison. Like I said, anything he wants, sure we'll pay for that

He deserved death, but I think all of the appeals that automatically come with a death sentence would cost the public even more money. He is, in my opinion, a waste of air and repeat offender. I'm with skyder - I think the skinheads will shank him.

This jury was just as pathetic as the defendant. To find value of life for this man completely disregards the officer's life value. The message this jury sends to all police officers is "you're on your own AND we don't care". Am I the only one that had the impression that it is rare NOT to receive a death sentence in a case of cop killing? Let's hope that doesn't become the norm.

Looks like this jury is trying to set a precedent for killing cops and "getting away with murder." It's because of crap like this why so many are religiously against illegal immigration. Someone mentioned on a radio show this morning that the mayor on down needs to be looked at for designating Houston as a "Sanctuary City."

More like SANCTUARY CITY UNDER SIEGE.

"There is a difference between justice and vengence" as someone mentioned with regard to this case. Justice is when a court of law makes a decision on a case - vengeance when the family gets hold of the perpetrator and sorts out the issue themselves. I don't agree with this guy getting life in prison. He said he was sorry but his body language didn't agree with what he said. If he was truly sorry he would have hung his head in shame throughout the trial and not been able to make eye contact with anyone in that court room. In terms of him getting life in prison, the tax payer still has to pay for him to live. Definitely not the best decision in terms of this case. Blaming his past for his current crimes doesn't go down well. He knew exactly what he was doing. Everyone has a conscience. Being here illegally now means that law abiding citizens have to cover for him. He should be sent back to Mexico to serve his life sentence there. That being the case, the taxpayer will be saved quite a bit of money.

Knight the problem with that is he will get out and just be walking around free here again.
I agree, someone who is sorry does not laugh and smile after being told his sentence.

I doubt very seriously he will be back out. He will end up in Ad-Seg. Here he will only get out one hour a day and fed through the "sally-port" in the door. He is only eligible for parole in about 28 years but it doesn't mean he will get it. I doubt this guy will ever walk the streets again. He need to be in there.

I have no way to know but I suspect this case was not prosecuted with vigor. Political agencies of the Mexican government, US State Department and the Roman Church no doubt brought pressure on the city to make sure the death penalty was not in the cards. If the killer had been an American I think he'd have a better chance of receiving a just sentence.

There was political pressure that he Quintero could not get death cause Mexico does not have the death sentence. Sorry buddy but you committed a crime in TEXAS not Mexico. If you or I commit a crime in Mexico WE would become someone's senroita and have all kinds of burritos shoved in us and the guards might be the ones selling us to the highest bidder.
Do the crime in the country then get the punishment the country dishes out. A good example, remember the kid that got caned even thought the U.S. said they should not cane the kid. Something to think about.

i couldn't believe they didn't give him death.

what a message this sends!!!! i guess now it's ok to kill a cop and not die for committing capital punishment b/c the turds life is "of value" all b/c this turd has a wife and kids that he was loyal to.

i doubt he ever stopped to think about how VALUABLE officer johnson's life was to his family or the city as he popped 7 bullets into him??

if the jury was only going to give him life & not the death penalty, then why were they so against the insanity plea???? why even bother to find him guilty of capital murder????

i'm so disgusted by this it's not even funny!

i truly feel horrible for the johnson family! it's really unfortunate they had to go thru this and relive all these emotions again all for nothing!

i couldn't agree with officer johnson's wife more when she said "his life meant nothing" and how she made reference to the fact that every other police officer's life in this city also means NOTHING.

it's good to see those 10 members of the jury (who voted for the life sentence) so grateful to the police officers that put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve our entire community!

i guess if you can get away with killing a police officer, you can pretty much get away with killing anyone.

oh and to top it all off...

quintero is probably going to end up joining one of those mexican prison gangs and end up becoming a GOD as a result of his killing of a police officer.

yeah, that's reeaaaaaaal value!

He deserved the death penalty. The jurors are idiots. Their decision is horrible. Right up there with the O.J. Simpson jurors who are also village idiots. But moving along to this subject, Quintero is not a citizen of this country, he is a criminal element. He has proven that he can't be trusted in his own country, nor ours to do the right thing. His life is of no value. Officer Johnson's life was of value in this country. He is a repeat offender for goodness sakes. I am ashamed of this country and this city's jurors most especially. That verdict is HORRIBLE!

I'm prolife not just pro fetus -- sanctity of all life, even a life as miserable as his is. 40 years in prison costs about $750,000 ish to keep a prison; death penalty case costs about $4 billion, so for those who think the death penalty is cheaper you are very wrong. Christ's life was an example of someone who did not believe in the death penalty either. I believe any juror who finds in favor of the death penalty and anybody part of the execution process are also guilty of murder. Not going to be a popular blogger right now. Thou shalt not kill (period). No exceptions.

I think the judge should have ordered for his cell to be wallpapered with the officer's picture so that for the rest of his life he would see his face every minute of every day to ensure he could never escape the thought of what he did.

I think they should change our current law. ANYONE from the United States or a foreign country who kills a police officer in the line of duty should face the death penalty. Maybe that way, we can distinguish the scum from the scumbags.

Catholics cannot believe in the death penalty. It is against our faith teachings.

I see your position, but respectfully disagree. Many religions do not condone taking another person's life either.

The defense attorney prior to the trial would be able to sort through the jurors. I'm sure that jurors would be omitted if they cannot make a decision or render a fair verdict, due to their religious beliefs.

That is why I could never be part of a trial where there is possible capital punishment decisions.

Sassy: Disagree with what? That a Catholic can believe in the death penalty? I never said we were the only faith that didn't believe in it. I recall the gunman who killed those Amish school kids. Their response to that was filled with the Grace of God.

Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition, # 2267, page 546. As a Catholic you can't pick and choose what to agree on in the teachings of the church.

We're the only democratic society that still has the death penalty. I don't like the list of names of the other countries that still perform executions that we are sharing that dishonor with.
