CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — A Long Island man convicted of helping his wife keep two Indonesian housekeepers as virtual slaves was sentenced on Friday to three years and four months in prison, ending a trial that shed light on the often little-seen exploitation and abuse of domestic workers.

The man, Mahender Sabhnani, 52, an international perfume maker, was also fined $12,500. He was convicted in December on a 12-count federal indictment that included charges of forced labor, conspiracy, involuntary servitude and harboring aliens.

The victims testified that they were beaten with brooms and umbrellas, slashed with knives and forced to climb stairs and to take freezing showers for misdeeds that included sleeping late or stealing food from the trash because they were poorly fed.

On Thursday, Mr. Sabhnani tearfully watched as his wife, Varsha, was sentenced to 11 years in prison. On Friday, she dabbed her eyes as she watched her husband meet his own fate in Federal District Court.

Prosecutors contended that Varsha Sabhnani was primarily responsible for inflicting years of abuse on the poorly educated servants.

Her husband, they said, allowed the abuse and benefited from the work the women performed in the couple’s $2 million Muttontown home.

Do you think the fine and amount of jail time fits the crime?

Considering that they lived in a 2 million dollar home...no, I don't think the punishment fit the crime.

I would wager they can afford this fine easily and the jail time would be spent in a low security, almost self managed prison for white collar crime.

Wonderful-World,

No, the punishment doesn't fit the crime.I'd sentence the couple to 20 years of cleaning bathrooms -- the direst ones we can find.

Give 'em a toothbrush to do the cleaning.

They treated these people like animals. Well, I bet they treated these people worse than their animals (if they had any). No, they didn't get what they deserved. And they shouldn't go to any white collar prison. They should be put in a regular prison where I'm sure their karma will come back on them tenfold.

No, I do not believe that they were properly punished for their cruelty to their employees.

Bring them to Texas and incarcerate them here, that will fix them good, maybe they will be murdered by Harris co or city of Houston cops!!!

One overlooked and not considered is the inequity of the sentences as both husband and wife are responsible for this cruel and inhumane atrocity.
I found it unusual the woman was served longer time than the man which is usually the reverse.
No monetary fine can undo the harm done to those poor housekeepers.
Had it been drugs, they could have lost that $2 million home which would have taught them a life time lesson.
Had it been a Jones, a Smith or Carter but again, the name tells me the level of civilization differs from one race to the other.
Or is it a question of breed ?

The woman was the primary abuser. The husband stood by and didn't stop it.

I agree with you Chassan, and the rest of the comments.
