Deborah Colton Gallery
is pleased to present this constructive forum representing all views through these talented and collectible artists, titled A Time for Change. The exhibition is curated by Catherine D. Anspon, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 20 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and a closing reception on Election Night, Tuesday, November 4, 2008 from 7:00 pm until the new American President is declared; performance by Joanne Brigham at 8:00 pm.

The exhibition marks the debut of Deborah Colton Gallery's new space at 2445 North Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77098 and inaugurates the gallery's fall season.  A voter registration drive will be conducted throughout the opening.

A Time for Change was initially conceived as a politically-themed exhibition, specifically addressing issues surrounding the American Presidential election and the changing of guard that will be decided upon November 4, 2008. The show was conceived 18 months ago before the historic nature of this election and its candidates had fully coalesced.

Gradually the exhibition expanded to include a looser and more organic interpretation of this moment, this time capsule — 2008. Ideally, the exhibition is more than a strictly orchestrated view, but addresses a time where America and the world moved from one paradigm to another, when barriers dissolve, issues are raised (from racial and gender equality to environmental concerns, the ever elusive concept of peace, America's role in the global economy) and answers — and consciousness — offered. In the same way that 1968 marked a period of upheaval and transformation, so does this year, which exists as a pivotal planetary epoch. And as A Time for Change will make apparent, artists are the prognosticators and provocateurs of our progress.

A Time for Change brings together 24 contemporary Texas talents ranging from mid-career internationally recognized artists like Whitney Biennial exhibited-Prix de Rome recipient Franco Mondini-Ruiz and now New York-based former Artpace resident Alejandro Diaz (known for his installations for New York's Public Art Fund) to emerging voices like Dune Micheli-Patten (a current Amnesty International artist and has a concurrent show at The Cameron Gallery in Dallas), Michael K. Taylor (concurrently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in "Houston Collects"), Project Row House-exhibited Nathaniel Donnett and Lawndale 2008 Big Show First Place winner daniel-kayne. Other visualists include Art Car Museum-shown Jonathan Rosenstein (represented by a suite of assemblage wall sculptures that employ found objects including vintage political buttons, whose lineage include ties to The Menil Collection via his parents, founding scholars of the museum) and Station Museum of Contemporary Art-exhibited, recently Mexico-based Susan Plum, whose alchemical installation features a gargantuan knot that resembles angel wings.

Styles range from the neo-expressionism of Luis Arsenio Gonzalez' Statue of Liberty and American flag paintings to the simplified, stoic and controversial ash canvases by Wayne Gilbert, which contain actual human remains, and contain potent imagery referencing 9/11. daniel-kayne presents a metaphoric installation utilizing tools that imply skyscrapers to contrast America and China, while Franco Mondini-Ruiz's suite of acrylic canvases probe cultural stereotypes and border politics. Ken Mazzu contributes post-apocalyptic canvases that portray a crumbling industrial landscape, and New York-based, former Texan Alejandro Diaz presents his neon text sculptures, which pronounce "Make Tacos, Not War."

Dallas artist Tracy Hicks (concurrently on view at the Galveston Arts Center) emits a strong statement about nature with his jars filled with plastic casts from endangered species that evoke the eerie sensibility of a laboratory after hours. Preserving and recreating an outsider art and garden environment made by a homeless Houston man named Dennis, Michael K. Taylor reprises his recent installation at Project Row Houses.

Global activist, artist and fashion designer Selven O'Keef Jarmon returns from South Africa to unveil a series of miniature houses that pay homage to the concept of community. Zoë Jackson-Jarra creates a fashion presentation including vintage, recycled and repurposed clothes, set to spoken word, politically-conscious poetry, while Michael K. Taylor and his poetry students also present a spoken word reading. Performance artist Joanne Brigham creates a closing night piece that tunes in to the tremendous anticipation of Election Night 2008.

A recent Marine who served in Iraq, painter Felipe Contreras comments on the experience with a quartet of canvases that confront change and the concept of patriotism. Kelly Klaasmeyer continues to offer an ironic, yet hopeful, take on the political process.  Anthony Thompson Shumate creates a new animation based upon the candidacy of Barack Obama. Nathaniel Donnett continues his literacy project begun at Project Row House, enjoining exhibition goers to bring a meaningful volume to donate to a young reader, while Dune-Micheli Patten's work includes bottles that conjure ghostly presences. Patricia Hernandez and John Todd Partridge also contribute, respectively, new canvases and sculpture that signify personal and political change.

The exhibition concludes with four artists who seek the universal and spiritual: Sandi Seltzer Bryant, Leslie Field, McKay Otto, and Christy Karll McWhorter. Bryant presents her ongoing series of abstractions that vibrate with vivid hues, while Otto's trans-dimensional canvases beckon the viewer towards mysterious portals. Field's photographic abstractions, presented in a grid pattern, suggest mandalas, while McWhorter's bells, created for a 2007 ceremony honoring Jane Goodall at the Rothko Chapel, dialogue with her delicate, exquisitely cast bronze tree branches.

Catherine D. Anspon reports on the Texas art scene as a cultural commentator and Fine Arts Editor for PaperCity magazine, penning a monthly column, Art Notes, which details exhibitions, news and arts-related topics for Houston and Dallas audiences. Anspon also contributes and has served as the Houston correspondent for ARTnews, writes features for Art & Antiques, and has contributed to ArtLies, Art + Auction, Art in America, and the website Glasstire. She is currently writing a book on contemporary Texas art, to be published by the University of Texas Press, fall 2010.

Deborah Colton Gallery is founded on being an innovative showcase for ongoing presentation and promotion of strong historical and visionary contemporary artists world-wide, whose diverse practices include painting, works on paper, sculpture, video, photography, and conceptual future media installations.  The gallery aspires to provide a forum through connecting Texas, national and international artists to make positive change.

WHAT IS IT WITH ALL THE NEGATIVE BLOGS ABOUT OUR BELOVED, ALTHOUGH MISUNDERSTOOD, MONTROSE AREA???

I MEAN, SURE, THE MONTROSE HAS ITS UNSAVORY ELEMENTS; BUT SO DOES A LOT OF OTHER MAJOR CITIES IN THIS WORLD.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE ONLY JUST MOVED INTO THE AREA ARE ALREADY COMPLAINED ABOUT THE AREA AS WELL AS BEING INTIMIDATED TO COME FURTHER THAT 100 FEET OUTSIDE THEIR 'NEW DOMICILE.'

I'VE LIVED HERE SINCE 1996 AND I HAVE NEVER WITNESSED HALF-DOZEN O WHAT THESE PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT. MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE I WALK WITH JESUS IS WHY NO THING UNSAVORY IS SEEN OR EXPERIENCED BY MY EYES OR BODY. MAYBE, IT IS BECAUSE I AM A LARGER THAN LIFE GUY WHO SEEMS TO NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY THE UNRULINESS THAT YOU SEEM TO HAVE WITNESSED.

TO THE COMPLAINERS AND NAY-SAYERS AGAINST THE MONTROSE AREA [WHICH SPANS MORE THAN JUST WESTHEIMER AND FAIRVIEW AREAS] I SUGGEST, BEFORE YOU MOVED INTO THE AREA DID YOU DO A HISTORY CHECK ON THE AREA; DID YOU EVEN CONSIDERED IT A THOUGHT TO DO SO?? OR WERE YOU SIMPLY MESMERIZED BY THE CHARISMA AND PROPAGANDA OF THE REALTOR? I'M ASKING BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT OF 'PEOPLE' THAT HAVE MOVED INTO THE AREA AND SOMEHOW ARE EITHER DISGUSTED BY WHAT THEY SEE NAD HEAR, OR SPEAK NEGATIVE ABOUT THE SURROUNDINGS. I LIVE IN THE MONTROSE NEAR THE MFAH, AND I FREQUENTLY WALK THE AREA; WITH MY DAUGHTER OF THREE [3] YEARS OF AGE. I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM, NOR HAVE I WITNESSED ANYTHING UNRULY OR UNSAVORY ?????

BUT WHAT I HAVE WITNESSED IS, THROUGH THE GENTRIFICATION OF THE NEIGHBORHOODS, EXPENSIVE HOUSING- NO, DOLL-HOUSING- IS BEING BUILT RIGHT NEXT DOOR OR ACROSS THE STREET FROM RAZED HOUSING; AND 'PEOPLE' WHO MOVE INTO THE AREA SEEM TO BE SCARED AS HECK TO WALK DOWN THE STREET :!!! I EXPERIENCED ONE WOMAN WALKING ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE 'MUSEUM TOWERS', WITH HER FAMILY, TO BELL PARK AND SAYING, "I DON'T LIKE TO COME OUT OF THE HOUSE. THESE PEOPLE SCARE ME...YOU KNOW, HOMELESS"...WTH??!!!!!...I RESPONDED TO HER, 'LADY, I'VE LIVED IN THIS AREA FOR THE PAST TEN [10] YEARS SO AM I ONE OF THOSE 'PEOPLE' YOU SPEAK ABOUT? IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD HAVE EXECUTED A THOROUGH BACKGROUND CHECK ON THE AREA BEFORE MOVING INTO IT. I'M SURE THAT IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT LONG ENOUGH, YOU ARE CREATING YOUR OWN NIGHTMARE AND BEING YOUR OWN VICTIM. HERE, HERE'S MY CARD.  COME TO MY STUDIO TO SEE AND PURCHASE SOME ART THAT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY; BECAUSE FROM WHERE I AM STANDING YOU SEEM PRETTY MISERABLE.  AM I SCARING YOU- IS MY DAUGHTER SCARING YOU- BECAUSE I AM TALKING TO YOU AS A PERSON WHOM IS INSULTED BY YOUR REMARKS!? HOMELESSNESS IS A VERY REAL ISSUE, AND IT IS LARGELY DUE TO THE MISPLACED BOOBOISIE THAT YOU JUST WALKED OUT OF. IF YOU SENSE A PROBLEM THEN DO NOT BE PART OF THE PROBLEM BUT CREATE A SOLUTION.'

HER MOTHER SAID TO HER, "HE TOLD YOU...I'D LIKE A CARD"

GOD BLESS THE ELDERLY FOLKS!!!!!

I HEAR PATTY THIS MORNING SPEAKING ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION [I.S.S] HAVING PLUMBING PROBLEMS??  AT THE 'END' IT SOUNDED LIKE SHE ALMOST TRIPPED UP AND SAID, "A.S.S'" INSTEAD OF I.S.S....?????

HOLY CRAP!!!!  THAT  WOULD HAVE BEEN FUNNY IF SHE DID ACIDENTALLY SAY "A.S.S.".  IT MAY HAVE BEEN APROPO [I SHOULD SAY 'APROPOO-POO' :PP ] TOO SINCE SHE WAS TALKING ABOUT THERE BEING A PLUMBING PROBLEM.

SO, IF IT WAS THE 'AERO SPACE STATION [A.S.S] WITH A PLUMBING PROBLEM, THEN SHOULD WE EARTHLINGS BE CONCERNED ABOUT HAVING THE CRAP FROM 'A.S.' DUMPING DOWN ON US????

I'M JUST 'AKSIN' :PPPP

SO, IN A SCENTS, I'D THINK WITH A PLUMBING PROBLEM, THE ACRONYM A.S.S WOULD BE APROPO...OR SHOULD I SAY, 'APROPOO-POO' :PPP????

TOO FUNNY :))))

As notified to me on ArtsHouston.Ning.Com:

Hello Dune-Micheli, our Starbucks Silent Auction started 4 years ago after one of our beloved customers lost his battle with AIDS. We have since hosted this auction to raise money for the AIDS Foundation Houston in his memory. Over the years, we have raised over $35,000. However, we could not be successful without the generosity of our local art community who has donated over the years. If you would like to donate an art piece to a great cause or help spread the word to fellow artists, we would appreciate it. Every dollar raised goes to AFH. If you need more info, contact Angela Lara @ 713-521-7278 or reply back. (3407 Montrose-Starbucks).

Good morning bloogers & FOX NEWS People,

I havent taken a considerable taxi ride in a long time; well, since 2001, when a taxi ride to Washington Avenue @ Sawyer was only $7 or so [$10 with tip].  Last night, six years later in 2007, i took a taxi from same area to Texas and Dowling [Houston Media Source's location] and it was $15 [$18 with tip]!!!  WHOAAAA!!!  Good thing I went to the ATM earlier...hahaha

Now, I know that I am experiencing a 6-year gap, but WOW; has prices gone up THAT much??!!!  I also noticed that the meter starts at $2.50 and you haven't even moved anywhere.  Then, it seems that it is about $1 per mile.

How do you 'fare' with current taxi prices; or do you not really care about it and anty-up whatever the cost???

I guess the best thing to do is google the distance before you travel; just so I know how much I will actually need.  But, then again, who's got time to do that; especially, with a 'snail-mail' computer :ppppp??!!!

Hello bloggers,

I have a friend whom I found myself repeating after as well as playfully mocking him with a saying that I've come to endearingly remember him by.  He says all the time [during or after a statement], "That's just amazing to me"

I had not thought of it before but now that I do think about it I find that I think about my friend whenever the thought of this saying arises; since I've never actually heard anyone else use the phrase.  So, I have this phrase burnished into my mind.

Even for me, I have had people repeat, or playfully mock, when I use the phrase 'Right On!' And I've actually had people tell me that they would think of me whenever they heard, or thought of, this phrase.  So, it seems that there are certain expressions that we have that are reminders of us.

Do you have a certain expression that you realize, either by reflection or someone bringing it to your attention, you have??

Please, share

Local Artist, and blogger, Dune-Micheli Patten, a.ka. WarriorArtist, participates in this exhibition; and responds with his acclaimed sculptural installation-painting, "IN OUR IMAGE MAN WE MAKE II,".  It is a mixed-media work on wood and was regarded by Mayor Lee Brown as 'Prophetic' due to the creation of the piece being completed in July 2001; before September 11th, 2001!!!  Come out to view this 'hand-granade' work of art. This piece has only been shown twice publically; that is, until now.  The time is right for this piece to be collected!  So, come out, see the work, and seriously regard this piece for your collection.

ART AND ALL THINGS INVOLVED WITH THIS EXPRESSION AND PASSION. My goal is to promote the ideal of a striving artist; and not the cliché’ of a starving artist. My aim is become more nationally recognized as well as internationally recognized. I seek to create works of art that are both complex but yet simple at the same time. And my new style, URBAN EXPRESSIONISM, allows me to be that; spontaneous and playful, and also serious, with my work. "Patten’s URBAN EXPRESSIONISM-copyright 2002 style although definitely abstract and modern is anything but vague. There is no denying the message of his work: maybe art is pretension and a sham but the artist is not a sham. It is a sentiment that one can readily believe in when faced with the true nature of a disposable, consumer society. Nothing is real any more so why should art be? And yet Patten strives to confront the viewer with what is real to him, his belief in God, his opinion of how the exploitation of sex, politics, and trend complicates modern society; and his memories of growing up as a person of color in a color-oriented society. His style, although very similar to Basquiat’s, is truly his own. Yet Patten does not send any message about getting even with white society or even fighting against intolerance, Patten chooses instead to almost seduce the viewer with his depictions of how he dealt with such issues and rejected the all too obvious answer to fight back. Patten would rather make the viewer think about why such labels are so readily placed upon others. The result is like the feeling one gets while contemplating one of his paintings: no one should be made to suffer for being what they are. If only the Republican Party could adopt such a sentiment."–Tomas Sustaita; poet, writer, critic
