A friend of mine was heading home tonight from downtown and we were near BB's Blues, Jazz and Soups...we were stopped at a red light just down Broadway and he made a left turn and I laughed and called him a rebel.  The street was a one way so he figured he could turn....we are both wondering now if that was right or not.  He figured since it was one way that you could turn left at the light just like you can make a right on red.  Do you know if this is legal or not?

It's LEGAL in my car! LOL - I do that all the time since traffic should be coming from only one direction than it's pretty safe to go left on red.

When I worked downtown I would stop at the red light, look both ways, then go if clear. Also, on the one way streets at a red light just like you guys did - I will turn left on red if it's a one way heading that direction.

These moves might create a $75 dollar ticket but by doing such defensive moves, you are virtually too mobile to be CARJACKED! So, legally I would say it's probably not a good thing to do but as we all know hindsight sure stinks!

We'll just keep avoiding crime by never sitting too long at red lights.

As far as I know, in some areas in Illinois, you can make a left turn at a red light providing its a one way street. But, to play it safe, ask an officer just to make sure.

I would have to agree with your friend. He sounds like a Rebel!
Maybe he looked over and saw how pretty you are and did not realize the light was red. His mind went blank and he took off. Dangerous but very possible. Or, like Speedy said, you were about to be carjacked!
I looked it for you two...US-MO Missouri Missouri Revised Statutes ยง300.155(3)(b) OK; NO LEFT TURN ON RED

The Missouri statutes seems too vague though. Unless they meant to omit "when entering a one way street" it's just too vague.

I agree with blogger above about crime prevention but tell that to the judge!

I guess the main decisive factor is do what you feel like doing until you get the ticket.

I guess this goes somewhat with what Speedy said, "It's legal in his car". Just test the laws and see what happens.

Since you do all of Fox2's traffic reports, shouldn't you know the answer to that? I am just as much taken a back that you find this funny, since once again pointing out that you give the daily traffic reports.

Speedy, Speedy, Speedy that is not the answer I was looking for! :-) I am hoping a police officer reads this blog or else I am going to ask one so we can get to the bottom of it. My friend was in a different car and he is the one that made the left. I called him on his cell phone and said, "Hey I don't think what you just did was legal." This prompted a good blog.
Catfish..thanks for the info on the metro east side and yes once again I think only a police officer would know this information.
KazooSam, I thought I was correct that you could not turn left on a red...thanks for the comment :-).
Answer Man..I think I will play it safe to avoid that ticket....thanks for commenting.
Mandm829...we write blogs to find out answers..I am not a police officer so I would have no idea what the answer to this is, which is why we look to our officials to respond. I didn't go to criminal justice school,I went to college for communications and broadcast journalism. I worked in news for 12 years as a news director and the last three reporting traffic accidents for Fox...we'll get the answer sooner or later.

I'm pretty there is an ordinance that forbids it but it is a pretty common practice and most cops ignore it......... I guess there are no Barney Fife's in the city......

you cannot use crime prevention because i know someone that tried to use fuel conservation and it did not help.

Again, I repeat, it's legal in my car. I seldom have one way streets and traffic lights combined unless I am in Springfield or Decatur Illinois.

It does seem that some law enforcement tend to read the state laws differently - doesn't it? I don't know why you cannot make a left turn on a red light if traffic is heading in a one way direction (to the left).

Would a red light camera pick that up? That's another issue at hand, since most cops at red light camera intersections don't hang out - it's up to the video.

Left turn on red
In most areas of the United States, it is also legal to make some left turns on red. In all cases, the road being turned onto must be one-way. Making a left-turn on red from a two-way street is legal in only five states: Alaska, Idaho, Michigan, Oregon, and Washington. In Washington, freeway on-ramps are considered one-way streets for the purposes of the left turn on red law.[1]

In 37 other states and Puerto Rico, it is legal to make a left turn on red only from a one-way street. Left turns on red are prohibited in the states of South Dakota (unless permitted by local ordinance), Connecticut, Maine, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Rhode Island and in the District of Columbia and Guam, as well as in New York City, unless a sign indicates otherwise.

In Canada, left turn on red light from a one-way road into a one-way road is permitted except in some areas of Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Left turn on red light from a two-way road into a one-way road is permitted in British Columbia only.

A left turn on a red light onto a one way street in Decatur Illinois is fine. Or at least today is was!

It all depends on how the set up is. If the street you plan to make the left turn onto is also a one-way, you might get lucky. Now Washington Avenue is a two-way street. But if you are worried about getting a ticket, I wouldn't do it unless it's okay by the police. And just like turning right on a red light, check to see if anyone is coming on foot that may want to cross the street.

May be against the law but a cop would have to be a real jerk to give a ticket for it. I am in favor of a no harm no foul rule. The real reason for traffic rules is for smooth safe and efficient travel.

downtowner, I thought it was a state law that you could make a right on red unless otherwise posted, wouldnt that trump a city law? Im pretty sure it isnt legal to make a left on red in any circumstance, unless an emergency vehicle is behind you with their lights on then, RUN THAT PUPPY!

I also write a health article for Streetscape Magazine in St. Charles. As for my personal hobbies, some of my greatest passions in life all relate to music. I have been singing and dancing since I was 3. I have also been an athlete since I was a kid, excelling in the sports of soccer, softball and basketball. I am extremely close to my family and miss my father daily. We lost him September 12th 1995. He and my mom would dance and you would think it was poetry in motion. My mother is one of my dearest friends, I have two brothers and a sister, all of whom are older. I am blessed to have many friends and acquaintances. I also love animals and have a beautiful dog named Kyra, who just turned 8 in September. I also adopted Kailei from the Humane Society of Monroe County in May of 2007, she is an amazing puppy. She is being trained by Casey and Shelly Ray with Team Dog St. Louis. I swear they are just like Cesar Milan, The Dog Whisperer. They even have their own little pack :-).
