Governor Sonny Perdue signing controversal legislation to allow people with concealed weapons permits -- to carry their guns to restaurants, parks -- and on public transportation.  Do you think the measure will lead to a spike in violence?  Let me know what you think.

I don't think this action will cause ANY increase in gun-related violence. There's simply no connection between registered gun owners and criminal activity.

I'm not a gun guy, (I don't own one and personally wish they didn't exist), but I do know that somewhat similar legislation in Kennesaw years ago, actually decreased the incidence of gun-related crime as well as other criminal activity.

Issues such as this legislation point out the fact that that there is a HUGE difference between registered gun owners and criminals. As such, I feel that no comparison is valid or should be made.

I think Governor Perdue is out of his mind for legalizing this gun law. I do not care if these are registered gun owners. Plus, this is not Kennesaw,Ga... it is Atlanta. I will not feel safe in this city if this is passed. I do;however, respect your opinion...just not buying into it.

I think that was a very crazy thing to do. With the current violence rate in the Atlanta area, this will give people with guns a reason to shoot people just because someone looks at them funny and they feel threaten. This is a law that will come back and bite them in the butt, or should I say shoot them in the butt.

In fact I think that there will be a decrease in gun violence with the criminals knowing that there might be someone there to shoot them down if they try something.
The criminals have guns anyway. Now the law abiding citizens have the ability to defend themselves and you.

With all respect to Hotlantageorgia, (and I do respect your opinion), can you provide ANY statistics to support your "feeling"? Do you feel safe in the City of Atlanta even now? (I don't) That's because the city is overrun with CRIMINALS, which has absolutely no correlation to gun ownership.

In fact, the ONLY gun crimes I can recall in Atlanta are those perpetrated by thugs and criminals... not by registered gun owners.

I personally don't want a world where ANYONE has to have guns for protection, but having said that, my larger fear is CRIMINALS and not gun owners at large. I just don't believe there is a connection between criminal behavior and gun ownership.

Excuse me, in closing, I should have said... "I just don't believe there is a connection between criminals and registered gun owners."

My thought is, if someone wants to bring a gun onto public transportation, a restaurant or park -- they're not going to have a concealed weapons permit anyway. It's the people that 'don't' have the license that we need to worry about...people who obtain the guns illegally.

This is a Georgia law, not Atlanta.

Many states already have this law and have no increase in crime and no increase in crime from permit holders.

If you want facts instead of an emotional opinion, do some research.

Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) holders have fewer "shooting" related convictions than police officers nationwide.

There are thousands of permit holders in Georgia - I don't think any have been convicted of a shooting related felony.

The concealed weapons law has always been around and I am sure you have been near people carrying guns legally and didn't know it. This law simply allows these holders to carry it in more places.

Want to know how someone carrying a weapon can save your life? Look at the stories where CWP holders were able to save many lives when they did have their weapon...and how many lives were lost when other CWP holders were not allowed to carry them.

Show us all statistics where people carrying guns LEGALLY - use them ILLEGALLY. The people you are so afraid of don't care about carrying permits - just committing crimes.

Tom you always manage to say in a single sentence what I can say in several paragraphs.

So... thanks & I'll shut up now.

HB 89. This bill will make Georgia a safer place, not a more dangerous place. It will not lead to any increase in gun related violence. I am glad we have a governor who did not cave in to the blatant lies and misrepresentations from anti-gun groups who were clearly provided a bully pulpit by the local news channels.
It is not the law abiding citizens who have undergone a background investigation by the GBI and the FBI, and have obtained a concealed carry license, who will perpetrate crimes using a gun. It will be the criminal, people who do not care what the law says. And now, there exist a measure of self-defense that was denied before. Kudos Governor Perdue.

OK you're a bad guy that breaks into homes... Would you target a community that bans guns or one that you never know who is packing heat? Would you target ODD numbered MARTA trains that could have armed riders or EVEN numbered MARTA trains that ban handguns? As a bad guy what train would you get on? Maybe MARTA crime will go down. They need officers on every train anyway. Maybe hikers can feel safe. Maybe I no longer need to worry about having a gun in my car as I visit a state park parking lot (currently illegal). When doing traffic stops on drivers that present a license to drive and a license to carry - you tend to have less to worry about those that present both. I can't see a thug presenting a permit with stolen loot in the car. Next up -- some type of formal training to get a license.

To the best of my knowledge there is no relationship between crime and those that legally carry conceled weapons.

Sunny Perdue has just allowed the citizen to be on a more level legal ground as the criminal in that they can also carry a gun where the criminal have always carried guns.

It appears that Atlanta has a serious crime problem and this law was for all Georgians.

One is 9,000 more likely to die on an operating table than be shot be someone with a gun.

People have always been afraid of what they don't know or what they don't know how to perform a task.

There is a country where all the people walk around openly with all kinds of weapons and there is no crime rate involving guns.

I fell sorry for the people in Atlanta that are not interested in protecting themselves. The police can not be with all of us all the time thus they cannot protect us.

Give this new law a chance and do some independent thinking.

I'm strapped up every day of the week. I treat my pistol like my visa. I NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT... I appreciate the new law. It allows me to keep it on me in a few more places. An I carry it to protect my life and my life only. If a nut snaps then he snaps. As long as it is not with me, then it's not my business... The OKAY CORAL!!! YEE HAH!!!!

Do y'all know how hard it is to get a CWP, 2 background checks 2 sets of finger prints for both state & federal. that's just for you not counting registry of your weapon Personal history going back ten years plus five personal references not just a note from your mommy will work here OK. So if I waste somebody in a Walmart, for whatever reasons, I'd better have proof of self-defence and fear of endangerment of life. The ROE (rules of engagement) for CWP holders are as the same for police & military. You shall not Discharge your weapon unless there is a clear & present danger, such as bodily harm or eminent endangerment of life {not of property}. You can't kill someone for trying to steal your car, but if they use a weapon to jack you then you can boink 'um big time. Also you'll probably want to get a weapons training certification, not needed but it helps to put it down on the app. Oh before you discharge your weapon you must give warning also, fergot that little tidbit. so for all those whinner's out there on gun safety, and use of force Yoo-hoo some of us CWP holders have a perfect track record of only firing when fired upon.......trippy P.S. Crimmials beware I'm insured by Smith & Wesson and am under-written by Colt. :)

Well I didn't have time to read all of the responses but this is my take:

We are talking about "LAW-BIDING CITIZENS" able to carry a Concealed Weapon into restaurants and on the bus. Before this law, who was carrying them on then.?....Those who are "NOT LAW-BIDING CITIZENS" we normally know them as "the thugs, the crooks, the violent criminal element...etc". But to hear ANY objection for "LAW-BIDING" citizens to carry a weapon for self-defense is just STUPID.

Yeah, bad things can happen....(Just like bad things happening before the law.ergo...no change.)

Our forefathers wrote the 2nd amendment for a reason....so we COULD defend ourselves. However, in the past the whining liberal mentality who would LOVE to make us COMPLETELY DEPENDANT on GOVERNMENT to protect us for every little bit of trouble we may run into is completely INSANE, has been systematically trying to eat away not only our RIGHTS but our ability to TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES! *You know when that happens, then we wouldn't need Government.*

LASTLY,
It never ceases to amaze me how those who are on the side of "BREAKING THE LAW" are the most dedicated opposition to ENFORCING the law ..and normally the loudest.
Loud doesn't make RIGHT. It just makes loud.

This is crazy. I feel sorry for the Atlanta Police. No one who is not a police officer should legally be carrying a gun on MARTA, or in a restaurant or state park. How can the police now tell a criminal from a regular person?

What is next. Passangers carring guns on planes. Remember this is public transportation just like MARTA. Georgia and Sonny Perdue are out of their minds in passing this law.

AS THE SAYING GOES: WHEN GUNS ARE OUTLAWED THEN ONLY OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS! I COMMEND THE GOV. FOR SIGNING THIS BILL. I HAVE BEEN A GUN OWNER NEARLY ALL MY LIFE AND A NURSE FOR 17 YRS. 3 TIMES I'VE HAD TO PULL IT IN ORDER TO SAVE MY LIFE, BUT THANK GOD NEVER HAD TO PULL THE TRIGGER. PLEASE THOUGH, IF YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN GUN SAFETY THEN DO, AND NEVER PULL ONE OUT UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO SHOOT IT OR IT WILL BE TAKEN FROM YOU AND USED AGAINST YOU. I'VE BEEN A VICTUM AND HOPE NOT TO EVER BE AGAIN.

cgoodson, dkp103, Do you have the courage of your convictions to declare your habitat a "gun free zone"? Fyi there was a time int eh US when KIDS of marksmanship teams carried rifles on the bus, we were SAFER, guns and knives were carried on plane all teh time ...we WERE safer and not violated by teh tsa. Has there been JUST one armed citizen on each of those aircraft the World Trade Centers would still be standing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
