As the new school year gets underway, some students (probably not a lot) will be heading to single sex schools. It seems like fewer and fewer people are choosing to send their kids to an all boy/girl school.

Well, from 7th through 12th grade, I attended an all girl school...6 very INTERESTING years! Let me just tell you, the "Mean Girl" quotient was exceptionally high, which made for some tough situations for the rest of us. :-) But in spite of having to navigate through all of that, I look back on middle and high school and feel it was a very valuable experience, especially from an academic perspective.

Obviously, single sex schools aren't for everyone...it all depends on the child, and each student learns differently. For me, it was definitely nice not to be preoccupied with "impressing" boys every day. Most of us(high school aged) didn't bother with makeup... and though we were allowed to have some sense of personal style, a strict dress code kept the "fashion parade" from getting out of hand (not that kids back then were into dressing up like today's teens...we were all pretty dorky and clueless. in fact, i'm amazed and sometimes concerned by how "mature" many highschoolers look now! ) Not having to worry about all of that helped many of us to focus, even excel in the classroom. It encouraged us to speak our minds, think independently, share our views and assume leadership positions...a real confidence booster. Apparently, studies have also shown that girls in that environment are more likely to take an interest in math and science.

Anyway, a few years after I graduated, my school merged with the boy's school next door and became co-ed. It has since expanded significantly and gotten even stronger in terms of resources, faculty, academics, etc. A sign that single sex schools may be a fading trend in education....

Personally, I'm not in favor of single sex education. The real world strives for men and women to co-exist harmoniously and in this increasingly demanding world of ours this ain't easy! You do however raise a good point: that being the potential for more female mathamaticians and scientists - for far too long the domain of the male of the species!

It would be interesting to get some views as to whether or not school uniforms should be compulsory or not? In France for example they aren't yet in Britain they largely are.

L@@K Suchita... If you're the product of a single sex school, then we should convert all of them to single sex schools starting first thing Monday morning! Do we need a quorum on this? The world needs more Suchitas!

Oh no! I just found out that Hillary went to Wellesley, a women's college, so I guess my theory is blown! How do you think they let HIM in?

You make some good points especially about the peer pressure, (worry)especially at such an important time in school. I went to school in the U.K. and had to wear a school uniform. My hair (male) could not be below my shirt collar if it was you where sent home to get your hair cut. Taught me how to dress for the business world though. On a seperate note of all your travels where is your favorite place so far. Also I see you worked for cnbc do you still follow the markets and investing. Thanks

I suppose the question then arises.... Does one feel they may have turned out any differently had they attended a co-ed school during those important formative years? There is always University/College to discover boys... Thereafter it gets complicated!

Suchita, FOX 5 Morning News Co-anchor and Good Day Host I've been at FOX 5 and in Atlanta over 5 years and have loved every minute of it! After globetrotting from St. Louis to Chicago, San Francisco, Paris, India and Singapore, I've finally begun to put down roots here in our great city :-) Can't get enough of cool restaurants and funky hangouts....if food is involved, I'm THERE! LOVE trying new cuisines, and learning about different places and cultures :-) My I-pod is loaded with 80's music. Watch out---I'll find any excuse to throw on a pair of legwarmers!
