Steve,
I know you've been gone a bit, and recently returned to writing posts again. It's good to see you back.

Guess who starts pre-season football games next month? Have you seen their TV commercials that say their time is NOW?

Re: the 1895 8th grade final exam, a student really needed to have a good memory to show the teacher what he/she learned. I'm guessing by your response that you're not convinced an 8th grader in 2008 could answer all the questions. What about the adults on TV who are not as smart as a 5th grader? I wonder if teachers graded on a curve back then? Anyways, I'll admit some of the questions were tough.

Just shows how dumbed down our schools are today. Self esteem and being a good lil global socialist get the brownie points now.

Ok, but here is my question. Let's see how many 8th grade teachers are up to date. Let's give them a test to see if they know current items. For example: What is the domain name in x E-mail address. How do you send an E-mail? Do you know how to post or upload to the internet? If you think about it, the questions on that 1895 exam still kind of exist, they are just updated. The question about the major economic center could refer to the internet or technology as opposed to a place.

Hey this is fun! We could do a Sunday school exam too......

True story: I was having a conversation with a high school girl a few years back. I mentioned the movie The Ten Commandments. She said Oh yes we`ve studied them in Civics class!!!!!! I was taken aback. Wow, they allowed that in a public school? I`m sure Moses would be happy to learn the Hebrews he led are no longer considered slaves in America.........

LOL Fun in a very sad way. We`re expecting our first granchild this fall and I truly fear what the schools will be like when he is school age.

Any of you ever hear the word conversating? I`ve heard more than one person lately say they were conversating with someone......conversing? *shakes head* lol

School time..
If you don't mind I would like to copy and send this post to my Grandaughter, a 7th grader this fall. She is smart, totally a Vermont lasse faire girl and needs to know the facts of learning. A 1895 exam would challenge her and make a good 7th grade conversation for her teachers.
My Grand dad graduated from this type of 8th grade education and it stood him well in the Depresseion Era. A great post.
Well Done.

Be my guest, volunteer3. Copy and send all you want. Best wishes to your granddaughter, who will be a 7th grader this fall, 2008.

FormerDetroiter, You're puzzled by the word "conversating" like I was when I first heard the word, "flustrated". And before you know it, as words get used more and more in the vernacular, they get listed in the dictionary. I think that's how it works.

FormerDetroiter, I want to congratulate you on being a new grandma this Fall. I know a lot of new parents and grandparents who share your worries about raising a kid in today's world. Sometimes it helps to live life one moment at a time. That tempers the worry a little bit.

Thank you Stooltime. We are excited for sure. I try to live in the moment, but some days it just gets overwhelming. :) A few days here and there I won`t watch or read the news when it gets to that level. That seems to help too.

You're welcome, FormerDetroiter. Your concern about the schools is shared by many people, too. I think that's why home schooling is becoming more and more popular.

I read this exam after copying and sending.
Unbeliveable, the depth, content, and variety of subjects was boggling.
My Granddad, circa 1890, passed this exam, in Michigan. He attended a 1 room school in Ingham county. His life was a business success and I can now see why.
