Here's part of the copy from a story on what a Texas-based Pizza chain is doing:

"A Dallas-based pizza chain says it will take it's "Pizza for Pesos" campaign nationwide.  "Pizza Patron" will soon accept pesos OR U.S. dollars at all 65 stores across the U.S."

The pizza chain started the 'experiment' earlier this year at one of its stores near the Mexican border -- accepting pesos as payment, then later converting the currency.  Has it worked?  The pizza chain says its business is up 35% in the last year and its planning on expanding.  Opponents, however, say the practice is Un-American.

So, is it Un-American to accept pesos as payment?  or smart business?   Your thoughts?

Just one more sell-out business. Should be on the top of the boycott list.

Un-American. Typical bleeding heart liberal ignorance AGAIN.

Y3Y3 plenty of conservatives out there selling out as well. But I find it very Un-American. Greed from low life business owners such as this one, will do this country in someday.

I'll throw my two cents (pesos?) in with you all...just a ploy to stir up conflict and go "in your face" playin' this ILLEGALs problem in this nation

If they want to take pesos then they should move to Mexico.

This may be petty but I hate having to walk to the top of an aisle at CVS to read the English side of its directory. At least the do have the english facing towards the front of the store.

The only legal tender in the US is US currency, if I recall correctly. So isn't the pizza parlor illegally operating?

This sounds really close to the food joint in Montgomery County that only took cash to hide its true earnings. I hope the IRS is watching.

It would be a real shame if the place burned down, and the insurance company paid off in pesos.
I am with the rest of you all on this, the owner is a sellout trying to get publicity.

"soytin" ...I share in your view ...this press 1, press 2 crap has, I'll have to admit, gotten to me ...who in the he=l started this politically correct, one sided business policy??? ...upwards of 12% of the population grows to a noticable presence from Latino origins in this nation (three quarters of that number ILLEGAL) over the past say 25 years and some bird brain, low level of business character decides the ILLEGALs aren't are a little to shy ...so at the expense of others (traditional customer base)they adopt practices catering to 'em to make 'em more comfortable as patrons of their businesses...

...all this effort has to cost something...who's payin' for it??

This is a question for Steve. There is an exchange rate between international currencies. 1 peso does not have the same worth as 1 US Dollar. So does the pizza parlor base its pizza prices on that exchange rate?

For example, let's say 50 pesos is equal to 1 US dollar. If a pizza slice costs $1, is the peso price 50 pesos?

beagle_buddy, we ALL know who is actually paying for it!

my point...yea, I do know ...we can only wonder how much more retail prices are to manage this but we know it's something...

Caffeinated-cow,

Here's what I found out. The pizza parlor has set up conversion charts for its cashiers based on 12 pesos to one US dollar (all change is then given in US currency). The restaurant is getting a slight cut -- as the current exchange rate is 11 pesos to one US dollar. The founder of the pizza chain (65+ restaurants and growing) claims that advantage is negated by the commission he has to pay the bank to convert the pesos back to dollars.

The owner says he's accepting pesos solely to gain "competetive advantage." Although a large pizza with one topping only costs $4.99. Sounds like they may be able to compete "with the big boys" on price alone.

the attitude exhibited suggests if a patron visiting from abroad speaking Dainish, German, Zulu, Italian and so on you're just sh=t out of luck ...no info, no one to aid in translation, who gives a good dam ...the latinos are a simple people that not much is expected of 'em so we'll help 'em along in perserving their language barrier ...the costs can be passed along through our the business' retail pricing

...for me if they don't have an interest in communicating with me in my langauge I don't need 'em and if they're ILLEGAL I really don't need 'em ...let me learn of it and I'll do my best to see you kicked out of here!

this is more awful illegal immigration advocacy in business. this is the United States. you should pay in U.S currency. this company should be forced to pay a hefty tax for this anti americanism.

This is the second step in a North Americian Free trade zone. The Bush administration is pushing for this. The three way talks in Canada were about this, CAFTA is about this and the New Superhighway between Mexico, US, and Canada( through land Ross Perot owns yeah old Ross) is about this. Look out it's comming, one currency ( like the Euro ) one territory no immigration problem.

Very interesting PW...I just visited a few websites and listened to to Lou Dobbs at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H65f3q_Lm9U.
The SPP and the NAU is something that needs to be openly discussed.

At this point, I am extremely uninformed about this...Fox News, Steve Chenevey you stirred this pot and in the words of Bill O'Reilly "What Say You?"

C'mon, there's no requirement that any merchant must ONLY accept US currency. US currency is SUPPOSED to be "legal tender for all debts, public and private" which allegedly means that they must accept cash IF you insist on paying with currency instead of a credit or debit card.

But lots of business have big signs by their registers, "No Bills Over $20 Accepted." Apparently, perfectly OK with the govt.

And just try to pay the IRS in pennies and see how far you get!

Now what about all you rock ribbed conservatives who are disrespecting the basic profit motive that underlies our capitalist economic system? Whatever happened to the guy's right to maximize his revenues by selling more pizza? His business has increased hugely. He's a free enterprise success story! He's living the American Dream! Ayn Rand would heartily approve.

Well, if we're going to accept pesos, then why discriminate against other nationalities?..Why not start accepting the Italian lira, Japanese Yen, German mark, etc.,etc...Now of course I'm being sarcastic. But as stated by caffeinated-cow, US tender is the only legal currency here.

Thanks for that info Steve. :-)

Reality_check, you have a valid point. If this business is willing to accept pesos, then it should also accept Euros, Canadian dollars, pounds, yen, yuan, etc. That way, they would truly maintain a competitive edge over their competitors.

loco, I don't have a problem with capitalism, but I do have a problem when a business acts in a manner that degrades our economic system. According to what Steve said, the business give the change in US currency. Therefore, it's kinda-sorta laundering monies: a large pizza costs 59.88 pesos. The person pays with 100 pesos. He gets about $3 back as change. Buy a pizza a day for 1 week, that would be $21 dollars, which can be sent outside of the US and used in countries that accept US dollars as legal tender, officially or unofficially.

I did not mean to sound sarcastic...Just saw the chance to say that and took it ;^).

I wasn't clear in what I was saying...From what I read regarding SPP and the NAU is that the media does not seem to be reporting on it.

Stirring the pot to me was creating the blog...No sarcasm intended.

You might want to check out the Trans Texas Corridor. My worry with this is thanks to the Supreme Court's "Immanent Domain" decision of two years ago a government land grab will begin in the name of economic necessity, and it all starts with a Pizza delivery guy accepting pesos for pizza.
Sorry Steve didn't mean to get off on to a rant. Good post

i know this is soo off topic, but there is know other way i can find to contact someone at Fox . I personaly think it is rediculas that Fox 5 is going to delay game 6 of the world series just soo obama A.K.A. Purple Lips can have some air time, its just rediculas. you might as well put him in the white house now, if he is going to have the power over fox 5 to delay the world series. Know one wants to watch him go off at the mouth. Everyone in this country wants to watch the game 6 of the World Series ON TIME! P.S. would still be upset if McCain did the same thing, not just Obama.

I grew up in a small, farming town north of Pittsburgh home to about two thousand people, one traffic light, and hitching posts for the Amish buggies. Quite a change from DC! I left a Pittsburgh tv station in 2003 to come to Fox5. I spent my first year here "on the streets" so-to-speak as a freelance reporter before moving into the Fox5 Morning News anchor chair a short time later. Before coming to Fox5 I worked in Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre, and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Youngstown, Ohio. I've been fortunate to pick up a few awards, including a Murrow and a couple of Emmys. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Clarion University. When I'm not working or catching up on sleep from getting up at 3am, I enjoy snowboarding in the winter and golfing and playing baseball in the summer. My most memorable story to cover was without a doubt Hurricane Katrina. I don't think we'll ever see that kind of widespread devastation again. Other memorable assignments include the Virginia Tech shootings, the 9/11 crash of Flight 93, and the dramatic rescue of the Que Creek miners.
