Daniel's Window

In light of the subway fare increase, I thought I would post this brief message regarding the maintenance of the subway tracks.  In my home station, at 3rd Avenue in the Bronx, there has been a large rat carcass slowly decaying for three weeks.  Apparently, rats are not considered a problem by the MTA.   I guess it's true what they say...Birds of a feather decay together.  How much more do I have to pay before I can expect clean tracks, free of rotting flesh?  I wonder if the MTA has a rule or a guideline that covers that?

Hey Dan,

I can understand your concern. That is way disgusting, and if I had to see/smell that on my way to work, it would ruin the rest of my day. I would have flashbacks in the middle of my work day!

Living and working in Jersey is so different. You can get spoiled with the convenience of driving everywhere in your own car. I don't think I could ever give up that freedom. Just the same as it would be difficult for a city person to adjust to suburban living I imagine.
The in-laws are Manhattanites, and I don't think they could ever make that switch; although the cost of their Manhattan apartment could buy a medium to large estate in Jersey. It's hard to understand that cost of convenience.

Hey Daniel that's part of the fun. MTA wants you to feel like your getting something for your money. Rats, crime, crowded trains special effects like smoke noise and that warm friendly feeling you get from an MTA worker. You can't beat the ride, so run out there and tell all your friends what there missing. Mayor Bloomberg will be happy you did this.lol

Roger Ashley! James, after reading your comment, I feel I should send the MTA more money every month for all of those extra "freebies" What a bargain!!

Hey, I like the rats! Counting them is my favorite past time. Thanks to the fact that trains come every twenty minutes, I got to meet many of them.

Hey is the carcass still there? I collect rat bones. I don't know if you read my other blog about my collection, Sanctus, but I want the MTA to include the bones in their museum. Great idea right?

Yuck, Z. what's your problem? Why would you want to collect rat bones? That is so sick. You can die from touching those nasty critters. Maybe we'll see you one day on Fox5 News...Idiot dies from obsession with rat bones.

K.K.P., thank you for your concern on my well-being but I do not appreciate crticizing the beauty of the rattus norvegicus skeleton. I am sure if you see a skeleton you would understand my love of the rat skeleton. For those reading this blog, if you see any rat bones please let me know.

Not being a subway rider, I do not understand why there would be so many rats, the 4 legged ones, in the subways? What is there to attract them?

If it is food dropped by people and it killed the rat, I would be concerned about the food.

Wonder if people were neater that would solve the problem.

Happy New Year everybody. Thanks for the comments. The rat has mysteriously vanished from the tracks. I suspect foul play!

You know what? I was wrong. I mistakenly thought that the rat was gone, but he was only covered by a black bag that I did not pay attention to because of the color match with the tracks. No bag this morning and I saw the carcass. The dead rat has been in place now for 2 months and counting.

lol.......... first time I read all this..

I am at a loss for words! I do think rat obsessions are a weeee bit freaky.

I used to work with a guy who would take pics of all kinds of things he saw on the subway, It used to be funny until once he was showing around a pic of a homeless guy who was killed doing # 2 on the tracks when a train came. The guy found it funny that the bird the homeless guy was flippin was still in tack......

I was never interested in veiwing his pics after that day.
(moral: no dead rat pics..pwweezzee..)

Maybe those rats lived in the subways, ending up as stinking, rotting flesh because they are the reincarnation of rotten politicians being forced to live in subways because decent rats would not let them live among them above ground.

I haven't been the same since the NH debate when a candidate stated that if we have a problem with Pakistan, we should sit down the the Prime Minister, tell him he was not doing a good job and HE WOULD STEP DOWN. And we would live happily ever after.

Daniel, you have a fantastic day. I did start the painting for your poem. Hugs to you and family, Aili

I just wanted to let you know that the average life span of a wild rat is only two years, at which time, most die from cancer. Let's make those two years something for the record books! What do you say? After all, they were born just like we were. Let's remember that.

Who did this study?

I wish that when a "study" was reported, reporters would also tell us WHO did it.

I believe half of what I see, and none of what I hear. Until I verify it.

Angelruby,

I did think that even rats with the easy lie didn't live that long. Well, most wee beasties that have short lifetimes are more prolific than other species. If large beasties with long lives bred as fast as rats, we would be in trouble.

Taken from that article, While it is true that the incidence of cancer in domestic rats is many times higher than that observed in wild rat populations, it should be remembered that cancer is a disease that comes with old age.

To me, it says the wild rats have better chances than domestic ones - guess our garbage is healthier than what we eat.

Thanks for sending this info.

I for one do not want to dwell on pictures of dead rats, live ones are enough to give you the willies....ugh...anyhoo I do get the message Daniel, when will enough be enough for all of us. Things just keep going up and up while our salaries stay the same and you have to hear the boss gripe about his "cough" "cough" finances????? I truly believe that the City, State and Federal Governments have to once and for all pull the plug on the wasted money. Our elderly, our children and our pets and the ones disgarded will all fare a lot better. Maybe, just maybe, we will as well. Any ideas on how we can get the message to the powers that be????

From the article, the wild rats eat better than the domestic ones. Was very general on the study of wild rats.

Of course, wee creatures don't live as long as larger ones and are more prolific. Can you imagine if humans lived as long as we do now but had just as many babies as rats, mice, bees, etc.!

Just in case anybody is still wondering, the dead rat is still in place, although the poor rodent is slowly getting smaller.

Seems to me like the MTA are more concerned with constantly raising the fair than they are in keeping their subway stations sanitary. Makes me mad! Jay
