When most people get a call from a telemarketer, they quickly hang up the phone. They didn't ask for the call; they don't want to waste their time talking to someone selling something they don't want to buy.

But let's say you decide to talk to that salesman, even if it's to cancel an order you didn't know you'd made. That's when you could wind up the victim of a remarkable scam.

Thursday and Friday at 6 and 10 we go undercover to show you how a Marietta company routinely tricked people into agreeing to buy... Girls Gone Wild videos! How in the world could they do that? By getting you to say one little word. It's so clever even we were impressed, so much so we decided to pay a little visit to this telemarketing phone room. They weren't as impressed with us.

Watch the story and let me know whether you might fall for something like this.

What's even scarier is when these sales agents called, they already had the "customer's" name, address and credit card information. How could that happen? We'll show you the warning signs to make sure you don't become the next victim.

I am so glad you guys got this company. I had a friend who worked for this company and she said it was legitimate, and than turned crooked... She left right away. She told the owner on her way out what the workers were doing, but she said he would take care of it. Boy, this type of stuff should never go on.

Randy, I had a very similar situation happen to me.

I use to get most of my musical CD's from the BMG music club. And one day, someone, supposedly from the music club, called me and was trying pass on a sales promotion.

When they asked me if I wanted to take advantage of the sales promo, I decline. This they asked me if my address was correct, to update their file. So, I said yes.

Guess what?

Three days later, I had the CD's on my door step.

I was very taken back by the stunt and called up BMG and went completely off on them.

They tried to say that I did order the CD's and then I told them about their little stunt and sent the CD's back.

They finally credit the account for the returned CD, but still tried to bill me for the shipping and handling.

I called them right back and went off again. And they finally credited that whole account.

All that for some CD's? I mean, I know that the economy is bad and all, but gee freak'n wiz.

I really hate sales people.

Yet one more reason why you shouldn't answer the phone if the caller ID doesn't look familiar.

I have a cordless phone w/ voicemail and believe it or not I have to erase about 20 messages every few days or so from companies like thoe ones featured in your "investigation".

thank you excellent job on telemarketers
tell the public how they can go to secretary of state to check pubic charites and also the new 990 e-card for non profits so people do not get scammed, on giving to local charities, this tax season,, and to report to ftc.gov

I actually use to work for direct connection back in 05 and they were doing the same thing then as they are doing now....LYING to get the customer to say OK!!! They just have a different style of doing it now. At just like back then the owner knew and knows the reps are lying. The money was good... I made over 1k a week however I got tired of lying. The money was not worth what we were putting people through once we got their ok's. Im surprised they have been getting away with it this long...

Something is wrong with the system that allows a charge on a credit card such as this to even take place, it shouldnt happen without the customer having to give the caller that card number.

For those who feel like SANTAS_ELF, you should petition the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC investigates claims of fraud in telemarketing, but it also allows the sale of credit card leads as long as the complete card number is encrypted and kept at a third-party site.

For instance, can u name some of these third party sites?? Do all the major cards participate in this??

I can't name the third party companies because I don't know them. The credit cards really have no say in this. The leads are sold by other businesses where the card was used. I'm told these are generally those late-night infomercials although one victim told me she had recently bought something from a catalogue.

It's probably wise to ask the company what their privacy policy is with your credit card number before choosing to do business with them.

Don't the owners of these 'shady' companies suffer any legal action? And if so, it seems that the 'action' is not enough. Maybe a 'harsher' sentencing?..Like public neutering should held. (No, I really mean NEUTERING!) Rusty Knife and all.

I've been a WAGA reporter since 1990. I joined the Fox5 I-Team in 1994. I grew up in Athens, Georgia, the son of a UGA professor and a hard-working mother of four. And I covered UGA sports during some of the greatest sports years in school history before graduating there in 1982. These days I spend my time traveling across our state, looking for examples of government waste, corruption, consumer fraud and anything else that I think you'll find interesting and important.
