In Midtown, Vernon Jones campaigned alone, with a big flag over his shoulder, on the day after he won 40% of the vote in the primary election. A short distance away, his runoff opponent, Jim Martin, welcomed third place finisher Dale Cardwell to Martin campaign headquarters for an endorsement.

The photo opportunities helped spell out the strategies as the Democratic Primary runoff began. With his six-point lead, Mr. Jones is seen as the favorite to win. But, even with a late start, Mr. Martin demonstrated statewide appeal and fundraising prowess.

With turnout lower than expected in the primary, both candidates face big hurdles in getting their supporters to the polls on August 5. After that date, the poorly-funded runoff winner will have to contend with a $4 million campaign treasury owned by Sen. Saxby Chambliss. The Republican incumbent also holds a double-digit lead in the polls.

It's pretty bad when $$ amounts determine whom can serve Georgians better rather than votes.
Even in National elections money is the grease in the wheel of the political election process.
Whatever happened to grass root politics where
you got on an old bus stopped at every little town got up on a tree stump or a soapbox made your speech in person, debated in a school auditorium in front of the voters whom matter most, then got down and passed the hat. Now it's become so impersonal. Candidates have multi-million dollar war chests, debate on T.V., and stand at a podium at a big civic center. Then have telemarketing done to raise campaign funds.
Ah yes the good old days, they've gone the way, I liked it when the popular vote was the only way you got elected. Now it's polls, super delegates, and lobby endorsements oh and media influences. It's such a shame..:(!)trippy
