Dear friends,

Well, it's finally happened.  We've seen our first above average rainfall month for the year, and the first above average since December 2007.  Rainfall totalled 7.17" at the Atlanta Airport, or 2.05" above average.  Here at Fox 5 in northeast Atlanta, we measured about 5 and one half inches, and at my home in north Sandy Springs (20 miles north of Atlanta), I measured about 8.25" of rain.  But many nearby areas were in the 4 inch range.

This was the most for a single month in Atlanta since August 2006, when 8.66" fell, aided by a daily record of 4.30" on August 31st.  This leaves us with a five inch deficit for the year, compared to last year at this time, when we were a whopping 14 inches of rain below average.  So things are looking up, but we still haven't  turned the corner on our still worsening drought in north Georgia.

Until next time,
Ken Cook

Just for thought Ken, but eastern Madison County, GA saw less than an inch of rain this month and continues to bake on less than two inches since April 15. Not all of north Georgia is doing well. Large oak trees are dying there; streams that are normally good-sized are for all intents and purposes, dry; and the Broad River could more easily be bush-hogged than swam. It is bad, bad out there.

I'm the chief meteorologist here at FOX 5, and have been here since 1979. Prior to that time, I was a meteorologist with the National Weather Service for almost 10 years, serving in Austin, Tx., Baton Rouge, La., and here in Atlanta. When I'm not watching the radar or telling you about the weather, I can be found in my vegetable or flower gardens, or on Lake lanier, or spending time with my grandkids here in north Georgia.
