Last Tuesday I had a wisdom tooth pulled, well it was impacted so he had to cut it out. Everything went fine. I was numb and for the first time laughing gas made me laugh because this dentist started humming all serious-like to a Hannah Montana song on the radio.

Most of you know i can't have narcotics and Advil (4 at a time) was working great. On Thurs. it was obvious something was wrong. I went back to the dentist and he said it is definitely infected so he put me on a heavy duty antibiotic.

Last night and this morning the pain is horrible. I put an ice pack straight on my jaw, take 4 advil and am just about doubled over until the medicine kicks in.

I have been taking the antibiotics religiously. Oh, this morning I was achy feeling so I took my temp., it was 100 and that was after taking advil.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any home remedies? Do I need to be concerned? One website scared me b/c it said the infection is so close to the brain. I'm very careful to not blindly believe every bit of info. on the internet.

((((grace))))

Good to hear from you. Infections are nothing to fool with and I'd keep the doctors close by phone if you don't see results from the medicine; maybe they can try another anti-biotic. Good move avoiding the internet, lots of hacks there.

Keep us posted.

Good advice from Eddie, Grace.

I've heard (and consider this completely unreliable, please lol) that the infection can get into the blood stream easily with a tooth infection. So, I would be extra careful.

If that temp. doesn't go down and you don't feel any better, get yourself back to the doc.

thanks Sal.

I read that clove oil is an old remedy for tooth infections. don't think Kroger has that though. Maybe I will send hubby over to The Cupboard (whole foods here in Denton). It will be good therapy for him. He starts getting a twitch when he pulls into a parking lot with cars donning liberal bumper stickers like, "Be kind to animals don't eat them"
or
"Bring the troops home now"
"Co-exist"

It's kinda funny to watch.

I had a similar experience. Looked like I had "Little Lulu" cheeks. It is EXTREMELY painful. But the antibiotics should start to kick in after a couple of days and you should start to feel less pain as the pain is coming from the infection. If you don't feel better by Monday morning you should go back to the doctor for sure.

I'm not fond of it, but it's not like I start twitching when I see it.

I know an old Indian remedy for toothaches but you had the tooth pulled so it would'nt do any good lol.I'd keep an eye on the temp. and if it does'nt subside and go away by Monday I'd def. call the Doc. Having wisdom teeth pulled is painful enough but to have an infection set in is even worse. Hope it gets better!

Just talked to my doctor. He wants me checked into the hospital if the fever is not gone this evening.

I'll be ok! I bet intravaneous antibiotics will get rid of it!!!

GG,

You are going to be in pain for at least 2-3 weeks. I mean, the dentist basically came in and carved those teeth out of you.

The best advice I can give you is to keep the back of your mouth clean. Use that syringe thingy the dentist gave you every hour or so.

The gums will heal. It just takes time.

That procedure is still pretty barbaric.

Hope you get to feeling better. I've been there.

oooohhhhhhhhh that sucks. I didn't get a syringe thing either.

Did you run fever POV?

Yes, I ran fever. It went away though.

GG, you can go to CVS and get one of those syringe things. Go ask the pharmacist. Also, if you dont mind your throat being numb, you may want to get some of that spray chloraseptic (sp?).

It's sugar free, so it wont mess with your gums.

You'll be OK...Just go to the pharmacist...That syringe should be #1. You dont want anything getting in that gum. Even if it is closed, it could still open with stress.

Good luck...I am leaving now...

If the antibiotics aren't working, then you need to seek further help. It's possible the socket dried out, which can cause some issues. Infections can really escalate, if your dentist won't help out, you may need to seek a doctor for some other remedy.

with a temp, it is probably an infection (versus dry socket, which is very painful).

Go back if the fever isn't down in 48 hours after starting the antibiotic. It might be a resistant bug, and you may need a different antibiotic. Also, rinse your mouth out with salt water several times a day.

If you are going to look things up on the internet, make sure that the source is good.

Trusted medical sites are listed below:

http://www.webmd.com/

http://www.cdc.gov/

or read medical sites that are affiliated with a large well-known and respected hospital.

My doctors have been giving me printed out downloads from WebMD for several years.

Yuck. Days 4-7 were the worst for me. It hurt, I was bruised and the whole thing made me feel like a jack hammer was in my brain.

Is there a chance that you have dry sockets?
