I am a big advocate of avoiding drinking and driving. I will admit that I was stupid enough to do it in my youth. Thank God, I never hurt myself or anyone else.

Now, I am lucky enough to be able to take the bus out downtown and then grab a cab home when I am boozed up. But before I lived on a bus route, I would drive out, leave my car and cab it home.

BTW - if you have never looked into the Cap Metro bus prices, it is $10 for a monthy pass. $10! That is insane. I almost want to write the city a letter. I almost want to tell them they are probably losing money with the current gas prices what they are. I almost want to tell them it's OK to charge more.

Almost.

Back to the d&d thing...Everytime I hear someone talk about how they are or were OK to drive, I think about how they're only thinking of themselves. Noone ever seems to consider that while you may FEEL fine, do you know how your body - and more inportantly - your mind would react if a small child jumped in front of your car?

I produced this PSA once that I really felt good about. It had heavy sound effects of partying, street sounds, crashing and then a sigh of relief as it said, "You drink. You drive. You crash. You live."

Next, I showed a picture of a super sweet looking small child as it said, "She doesn't."

Not that the child needed to be super sweet looking, but you get the point.

Do you get the point?

Who knows if anyone ever got the point.

The point is this: You may think you are okay to drive. But that doesn't mean you are. And even after just a few drinks, your defenses are most definitely down. So stop thinking about yourself and think about how you would feel if you killed someone.

OK, enough deepness for the day.

This was all a lead in for my actual Austin related entry.

When you are too drunk to get yourself home and aren't willing to leave your car parked around town, there's an Austin company you can call to come to your rescue.

Zingo pops a portable scooter into your trunk, drives you home and then zips on out.

All you have to do is schedule a pick up and hand over your keys and address. I'm guesing it's best to schedule a pickup if you're panning on downing a few drinks. Ever tried grabbing a cab at 2am? It's B-A-N-A-N-A-S!

The price is a bit steep but much less than a DUI/DWI - whichever the heck it is - and definitely better than the alternative(re-read rant posted above).

Check out their site for more details or see the story that ran on FOX 7 this morning right HERE.

Very few public transportation systems expect fares to cover the full costs of transit. (Otherwise you would see private vendors competing in the urban transportation space.) Capital Metro's "fare recovery" is comparatively low; fares pay for less than 5% of Cap Metro's operating budget.

I'm of the attitude that it's better for transit systems to encourage as many folks to get out of cars and on the bus (or train), so I think it's good that there's only a nominal fee for using this service. Remember that taxes subsidize private auto use as well through road contruction and maintenance, traffic management, and policing.

I had not thought about it that way.

Thanks for your comment.

Pretty cool service if you want to avoid picking your car up the next day. Not a bad price either.

Friends get mad at me when I do not let anyone even open a beer in my car and if they do I will stop the car get out take it away from them and pour it out.

I still have the same rules in my car and there is no driving away from any party I give no matter where it is because I will turn them upside down and shake the keys out of their pocket if they even try to drive drunk.

I am sure a lot of my friends would like zingo much more than my strong arm tactics in any case LOL

Before I pick someone up by their feet next time I will be sure to ask them if they want me to call zingo first....If not Oh well I make the rules at my parties and enforce them with my superman type strength without even thinking about it :-)

I was at a party this weekend and I meet with a very nice young man who was starting a new business. He had seen Zingo in some other city's around the country and he wanted to start his own business right her in Austin. Let's just call the man Jim for the sake of this post. Anyway Jim wanted to order 10 bikes from Zingo. He put in his order to the company. Zingo asked Jim if he was interested in starting a franchise in Austin for $25,000 big ones. Jim declined because he felt like he could run a better business, considering that he was going to make vast improvements to the business model. Zingo only has 4 bikes, Jim has 10. Zingo's drivers are not up and running on a GPS tracking system to keep his drivers as efficient as possible, Jim does. Jim waited, and waited, and waited for his bikes. Guess when he got them. The week after Zingo launched in Austin. Jim was screwed. I for one hope that Zingo goes belly up. I feel like they took advantage of my friend and I urge everyone to not ride with Zingo. I can't for the life of me remember what Jim was going to call his business or I would tell you all right now. But I do know this. In a world where C.R.E.A.M. (cash rules everything around me) wouldn't it be nice not to feed the beast? Support local business and don't ride with Zingo.

Zingo is a locally owned business smart guy! Each location around the US in individually owned by a local entrepreneur. If your friends business model is better then his company will prevail above Zingo
