We get countless emails and calls from folks who thought they were making a legitimate buy on eBay or other garage sale sites like Craigslist but who were really about to get ripped off. As soon as you think you can figure out what is a real deal and what isn't, the bad guy has already reinvented himself.

So, every once in a while we re-visit the topic. Wednesday and Thursday nights I'll do two more reports on the subject.

This case though is particularly sad: a family struggling to make ends meet after adopting a child with severe disabilities loses it all. Sure, there were a couple of red flags they should have noticed, but as newbies to eBay and just trusting people, they were taken. And how were they.

Catch it if you can. Perhaps one of our viewers has a way to help them out.

Thanks so kind. We are getting some calls from viewers who'd like to either donate money or get a fundraiser started. I'm wondering if contributions would best be handled through their church or perhaps a bank account set aside for this. I'm checking and will get back to you.

Again, thanks for reaching out to them.

Dana:
Let the consumers know when they see an ad on EBay, check the item number on EBay. The thieves attach closed orders and represent them as being new ads.

I saw an ad on Craigslist for a 2002 Lexus for 6000, 00. I emailed the seller and he told me the car was in London. I said to myself this is a scam. He continued to email me regarding the car, so I decided to look on EBay for the car. This is what happen, He posted it when it was $6000.00. But the car was under another name and had been sold for 12,000. He just attached this car to his address to scam anyone that would fall the scam.

I am so sorry the couple, I will pray for them. I will make a donation when the information is posted.

I own a local Atlanta Business selling on eBay. We have been at it since 1999 and sell several million dollars a year on eBay. I have heard and seen every scam there is. I hate to hear stories like this one. It is unfortunate that there are these predators out there. eBay is constantly revising policies and adding selling requirements to make it harder for the scammers to exist. I think you can possibly help people if you work to educate them on what to watch out for. First off you say in your report that these folks purchased the van on eBay. eBay does not sell anything. They offer a service for people to offer for sale and others to purchase. It is not the same as buying on Target.com. People need to understand that, it's important! An ebay transaction is going to be with one of millions of individuals, not eBay. eBay offers extensive information about how to protect yourself when entering into a transaction on their site. Please advise people to educate themselves on safe payments, to ask questions of a seller, to check feedback and most importantly apply one simple rule "If it seems to good to be true, it probably is"

Everyone thanks for your comments. A lawyer who specializes in issues like the Landers is going to chat with them about how to best set up something. I'll get in touch with you as soon as possible.

Thanks d

Thanks to all of you who expressed an interest in wanting to help Scott and Rebekah Landers and their daughter Brianna. Your outpouring prompted the family to set up a fund through their church. There are two ways to donate: You may go to any Fidelity Bank and give them the information below or you may go to the family's church and drop off a donation with the secretary who will take it to the bank for you. Either way, it's tax deductible.

Again, thanks to the kindness of our viewers, this family may finally get a break.

Please let everyone know on the air when something is set up to help these folks. Being handicapped myself and also having a child with cerebal palsy in the family, I understand their needs. They need our help.

We are doing a second part on this story tonight. I will most certainly let our viewers know that a fund is up and running.

Thanks.

Dana, My daughter's boyfriend has just been scammed in a similar manner. He just returned from Iraq in June after having having been previously deployed in another location in the Middle East. He could not afford the gas for his truck to drive to base, so looked on EBay for a small, used vehicle. He found one and won it. THe seller requested he pay through a Moneygram than through the means recommended by EBay. Delivery was set up for the vehicle and no vehicle! The funds were wired to one state but found upon checking to have been cashed in another state under a fraudulent name and address. He has contacted authorities including the "white collar" crime unit shown on your piece as well as the FTC-apparently there is nothing that can be done to recover this young man's hard earned $4000. Now he really can't afford the gas! To take advantage of the disabled and/or those serving our country to have the freedom to use the free marketplace, takes theft to a whole new level.

you know...if an ad is placed on ebay, it has to be paid for, at least once a month. if there were so many of these ebay ads placed for this van, the user usually sets up a paypal account or some method of payment or they are not allowed to sell again. have the investigators reviewed with ebay about who paid for the placed ads? when paying for ebay, you cannot pay by check, or cash, but by credit card, or paypal, which both the billing address and home address must be verified in order to pay for the ad.

can this scammer be prosecuted IF he is in England or another country? Another thing, there is NO SUCH THINGS AS AN AUTHORIZED EBAY AGENT. There never has been, and there probably never will be.

can you say what year, make and model that van is?

Like the new PIC Dana!

This same deal was floating around on 24" IMACs I hit the brakes with teh Wester Union deal! thatlisagirl is correct there is a significant "paper"trail asscoiated with ebay accounts... I dint think that there is enough push to prosecute this kind of stuff... So much for "Protect and Serve"

Maybe I can get a straight answer from you guys since eBay has honestly been of little help in describing what might have happened to the Landers. I'm not a big eBay user so can you tell me how a buyer signs onto the Web site but is then shifted outside of it while yet still looking at a page that appears to look real?

Also, keep your eye out for this van as I'm sure it will continue to reappear. Search "Toyota Sienna van handicap". I believe off the top of my head that it is a 2006 (I'll check on that.) with about 43,000 miles. It has a ramp leading out of the van. It's a nice looking van actually except the real owner in New Mexico has no idea I would guess that it's being "sold."

Dana, I have been on ebay for several years now just buying things, not selling, but I do know that you have to set up an account in order to buy or sell...There should be ways in order to find these people if the authorities or even ebay were willing to help..I personally always pay with pay pal that way I have a record of the transaction plus if I don't receive my item, I can file a complaint..I feel so sorry for this family..

For future "newbies" I suggest if you get on ebay looking for something and your not sure how to do it, ask someone that does to help you or go to the "help" in ebay..I also don't buy anything outside the US, but that's just me..
Can I ask where the van was suppose to be located? Was it around here or somewhere else? Was the total amount of 5600 for the vehicle and shipping or just the vehicle.. I know you said in your piece that the seller was moving..When ask to send the money overseas should have really sent up a RED flag to Mr. Landers and to anyone else that does business on ebay..I saw the posting you made where to send donations and I will be doing that and I hope the people of Georgia will do the same..My heart and prayers go out to this family...God bless...

I'm sorry I just had to write this...I was reading the comment from "AVforsale" posted on July 17 @ 7:14AM and reading your comment really bothered me..First of all you come on here and the first thing you say is that you make "several million" dollars a year selling on eay and then you feel that you have to defend ebay..and the only thing you say about the family is "I hate to hear stories like this one"..If you make so much money, then why don't you help, I didn't see anything about you offering in any way, not that's it's your responsibility or anything..and you also say that in Dana's report that the family purchased the van on ebay, THEY DID..no ebay doesn't sell anything, but they are the "go between" if you will between the buyer and the seller..maybe they didn't sell the van, but it was bought on ebay..and last but not least, I noticed that everyone else that left a comment, did just that, but you went one step further, you gave your email address which I felt was for your benefit not the family..correct me if I'm wrong but it didn't seem like you came on here to help this poor family but for yourself..

I'm not as serious as I look on TV. I love to laugh even if it's at my expense. I'm just not very PC. My friends would describe me as "black and white." Not a lot of gray. My co-workers call me Elaine from Seinfeld. I'm generally disheveled and have a messy car. I have really curly hair, but the station doesn't like it that way. I love my husband because he's funny. I also love red wine, rare steak, dark chocolate and strong coffee. I'm Type A, so of course, I wish I were smarter.
