Many of you have called or written the station about Dandy.   She is Gary Michael Hilton's dog, the man accused of killing hiker Meredith Emerson.    Mr. Hilton it seems was often seen on hiking trails around the state with his dog Dandy.

Since his arrest Dandy has been in the DeKalb County Animal Shelter and will be for a while.  She is considered "evidence" for lack of a better word.  A DeKalb PD spokeswoman tells me that Dandy will eventually be up for adoption, just not yet.

Concerned people and rescue groups have not only called us but also the shelter.

I've asked DeKalb police to let us know when they are ready to find Dandy a wonderful home.   We'll keep you updated.

Since the dog is a co-conspirator & played a large part in the crime, it should be euthanised

My husband and I had a conversation this morning about what possibly Dandy has seen in her lifetime.

I'm convinced a loving family will eventually take her in, but I can't help but think what it would be like looking at her thinking, "What have you seen?"

Eery. But, hey, she's a dog. She's adaptable. She'll probably be just fine.

People who want this dog are the same sort who wanted John Gacy's clown artwork, they want to brag about having a killer's dog..its an oddity..a walking canine freak show that doesnt even realise whats going on BUT the owner does..a lower form of life in my opinion

It is heartless to say an animal who unwillingly was a part of something like this, be put to death. This poor animal deserves a good family and home.

Do you know what happened to Meredith Emerson's dog? Is the family keeping it or is it at the Animal Shelter like Dandy? Was it injured? I was thinking of how horrible the dog must've felt to not have been able to save Meredith, who obviously loved it very, very much!

You people live in a fantasy world, thousands of good pets are put to death every day and they dont belong to killers

I dont know why it is that people are worried about 2 dogs when there is a person that has been murdered. Just seems weird to me people are more interested in the dog than the actual murder.

I FEEL THAT THE DOG HAS BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH THAT WASN'T HER CHOSE. SHE DESERVES TO LIVE OUT THE REST OF HER LIFE WITH A LOVING FAMILY.

Meredith is the victim which paid with her life. Very young…too tragic. Both Dandy and Mededith’s companion are victims also. Meredith’s companion will grieve for the lost of her loved one. As for the monster which committed this atrocity. He plea bargained to save his sorry hide so the tax payers will have to pay to keep him alive the rest of his life. Hopefully Florida will find enough evidence to convict and sentence him to the fate he deserves.........

I haven't covered this story. I am an observer just like you are, but I don't believe Hilton exactly negotiated a plea. That is a formal, legal procedure. My understanding is that he cut a deal: I'll tell you where the girl is if you take the death penalty off of the table. Only problem is that Meredith's body was found in another jurisdiction. Last I heard the DA in that other county has said, I didn't cut a deal. So, Hilton may still face the death penalty in Georgia.

It dont matter whether he gets the death penalty or not in Florida anyway. He will die of old age in prison before he is executed. Thats the way this GREAT Country works.

What's wrong with you people. Don't look through your eyes to judge, a dog is much different and she or he deserves a good loving home. I'm sure both dogs witnessed his abuse but they don't have the ability to reason as a human does and shouldn't pay such a heavy price, their life is built around instinct. I hope he,she gets a good home now he,she sure deserves it.

To say a dog should be euthanized is so wrong! Dandy did not chose to be with a killer. Animals can't speak for themselves. That dog deserves a family that will love and take good care of it. That awful man probably abused and no telling what else he did to that innocent dog.

I hope Dandy lives a long wonderful life with a loving family who will never raise a hand to her "I'm sure she's had plenty of that". She deserves a life without abuse, physical and verbal. God gave us these little creatures for love and companionship, but some people think they were put on this earth for there amusement. God speed Dandy....

Oh my goodness santas_elf, you are so wonderful and sensitive about that little dog. I dont think I can stand it. I wish I could be as good as you, then I wouldn't have to cry and whine over all the abuse some poor little animals go through. So boo hoo hoo I don't think you know what a hankys for....

I want to know how old this dog is? Is this the same dog Hilton had all along, when he took the job at the siding business? That would make this dog 10 years old, if it is. Is it possible to find out approximately how old Dandy is?

I'm not as serious as I look on TV. I love to laugh even if it's at my expense. I'm just not very PC. My friends would describe me as "black and white." Not a lot of gray. My co-workers call me Elaine from Seinfeld. I'm generally disheveled and have a messy car. I have really curly hair, but the station doesn't like it that way. I love my husband because he's funny. I also love red wine, rare steak, dark chocolate and strong coffee. I'm Type A, so of course, I wish I were smarter.
