I had the pleasure this morning of joining the Steve Harvey morning show.   I'm sure most of you have heard of this nationally-syndicated radio show.

The topic:  Dirty Hotel Room Glasses.  Boy does this story have a shelf-life.  Since bringing our investigation to you in November about how major hotel chains fail to properly wash their guest room glasses this story has flown across the Internet.

It was a topic of discussion on a PR Web site where public relations specialists were asked to discuss how they would handle such a crisis at their company.   Interestingly, most said that they would have gone on camera to admit that their company had made a mistake.  Others said they would have gone as far as to invite us into their hotel to watch how they'd made things right.  Ironically, not one hotel chain would go on camera.  In fact, when we went back to The Ritz-Carlton with a health inspector, we were asked to leave.

Over the holidays I went to Virginia.  I walked into a Christmas party and heard a group of people talking about the story.  This series really touched a nerve with viewers.

I guess we've all stayed in hotels, and some people, like me, never thought to wonder how the hotel where I was paying to stay was washing the glasses in my room.

Keep sending me your thoughts about their stories and your hotel room experiences.

Yes, I liked the series, and please do another one on restaurants. I like going out to eat to different restaurants from Applebees to the Chessecake Factory, but I do wonder if they clean their dishes really well. What if you're eating behind someone who had a coldsore, cold, or even has a STD???? Please, do a restaurant series and title it. ARE YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS CLEAN?????? FROM McDONLAD'S TO 5 STAR QUALITY........

I have done that, however, I wonder if you could help me in spreading the word all over the USA. If this happened in two different states, I would think it is likely that it is happening everywhere.

Jeffrey,
I am assuming you are referring to the management at the Hilton Suites in Brentwood. What can you or I do to bring awareness to this problem countrywide?

I did a consultation with management on 12/21/07. I gave them a copy of the complaint. They agree there was a communication problem with management and staff. They were going to update there SOP. and retrain all their staff on the right way to do the coffee cups. I told management that on my next inspection that I would like for their staff to show me how they were doing the coffee cups and glasses.

While we look at ways to handle a grim situation if we were to have a disease pandemic, lets look at just one way we can prevent it.

Hilton Garden Inn - Atlanta, GA
Hilton Suites - Brentwood, TN

I used the real glass coffee cup at both. To experiment, I placed a dot on the bottom of the cup with a regular ink pen. This easily wipes off with your finger. To my disgust and surprise at both hotels, my cup appeared clean on the inside, yet my ink dot was still fully in tact.

1. The night manager here in Brentwood stated that Dawn dish soap is
used to wash them in the room. Then, they are replaced when your stay is over. (funny, the maid knocked on my door and did not know I was staying another night)

2. The day manager here in Brentwood stated that they are supposed to
replace with fresh cups and remove the dirty ones to be sent to the dishwasher. (to which he followed up with a complimentary breakfast for
us)

3. I asked a maid from another floor and area of the hotel if she had Dawn dish soap, she did not understand my question as she did not speak English, she offered me shampoo, towels, and a few other items before I gave up.

4. I found a young man who was a janitor wearing a tag with his name and international status of Mexico if he spoke English, he said some.

I explained to him I wanted to know how they cleaned coffee cups in the room if they were dirty. He went back to the room where the maid was
working. After much discussion, of which I had no way of knowing what
they were saying, he asked wha

4. I found a young man who was a janitor wearing a tag with his name and international status of Mexico if he spoke English, he said some.

I explained to him I wanted to know how they cleaned coffee cups in the room if they were dirty. He went back to the room where the maid was
working. After much discussion, of which I had no way of knowing what
they were saying, he asked what room I was staying in, to which I assured this had nothing to do with this maid. He then stated there was no dish soap or other dish cleaner on the maids cart. No rack of coffee cups or the nice glass cups provided in the room.

He and I briefly exchanged thoughts on how bad this practice seemed to be.

5. I asked another maid, from Mexico as well, who spoke English what the rule was on dirty in room coffee cups, she stated they are to be brought back to the kitchen to be washed. I asked her if some maids wash them in the room, she replied, they are not supposed to. Again, I said, so some of them do because it is easier? She said she didn't know.

Bottom line is, with prevention methods like this in place, we should have no problem spreading a deadly disease around the world in a very short time.

Additionally, even if they did have dish soap on the cart, the mini bar sink has only cold water, leaving the bathroom sink the only place to wash them YUK!

And last but not least, bring your own dish soap when traveling and pre-wash all real cups!

I'm not as serious as I look on TV. I love to laugh even if it's at my expense. I'm just not very PC. My friends would describe me as "black and white." Not a lot of gray. My co-workers call me Elaine from Seinfeld. I'm generally disheveled and have a messy car. I have really curly hair, but the station doesn't like it that way. I love my husband because he's funny. I also love red wine, rare steak, dark chocolate and strong coffee. I'm Type A, so of course, I wish I were smarter.
