I worked late I am about to head to bed, but I can't stop thinking about the disappearance of Meredith Emerson.    It just makes me sick that a young woman has moved to our area, enjoying our open space and disappears.
I hike with my dog and now my husband is saying, No more.  Don't go without me.
Well, that's a heck of a position to be in.  I remember growing up along a major hiking trail and my mother saying, in the 80s, don't go without a friend.  I resented it then and on some level resent it now.
Why can't a woman feel comfortable hiking in a community that she helped pay to support?
God help her family.  I hope this story turns into one of those great stories of survival.  If not, it is crushing to think that women today are too afraid to enjoy the great outdoors.
Cross your fingers, cross your hearts, whatever it is you do, and hope this turns out well.

Look in that mans eyes and there is not one speck of care or remorse or sorrow for what he has done to that....kid. She has hardly had a chance to start the life of her own that she may have always dreamt, and this sick excuse of a man just decides that for whatever reason he may have that his wants are more important that hers, so SHE gets to pay the price with her life and he has already has lived his twice as much as hers. Its not just the fact that women should have to be watchful, but its what this world is coming to. It probably wouldnt be this way if we all packed one like in the Old West.

Some people just need a bullet...

This guy is a real psycho. I would have liked to introduce him to a 12 year old in Butte, Montana. My heart and prayers are with the family of this girl. Hope he admits to the other murders i think he has committed.

Meredith Emerson was found but not alive. And now the new details that are coming out are simply gruesome and horrible to imagine.

Fox 5 has reported that not only was she found dead but decapitated. Additionally, police documents say he held her captive for several days before she died.

And there's more: he may be connected to other unsolved murders.

I go to a dog park where I understand from other women who go there that he was a visitor himself to that park. How terrifying. That wooded park is often filled with women alone with their dogs and children.

There is no way right now to console her family and friends, but at least finally, if he did this, he is off of the streets.

I was reading the latest report this morning on the missing hiker (Meredith Emerson) after they found her body, I was so upset I had to get up and walk away from the paper. This was before my wife told me she was killed with a blunt object and also was decapitated. I thought why, why did he have to do that?
After reading the article in the paper, where he mentioned they were taking good care of him at the jail, he also said they gave him three blankets, while this child was lying in the woods dead. This made me nauseated.
The next time I hear someone mention, putting some killer to death by lethal injection is
inhumane, I'm going to unload on them.I assume
they want to be beat to death with a pillow. I think they need to bring the electric chair back.
The justice system will say the guy is crazy and put him in a mental hospital for the next 20 years or til he dies there.

I cant believe anyone would question IF he murdered that little woman....he told the authorities where she was to avoid the death penalty in the case of her murder....in my book, that means he did it. How else would he know where she was if he didnt put her there. Or is this going to be another Brian Nichols case where the word "alleged" is key in his case? Both of them need to hang and unfortunately in this wonderful justice system that we have, they are getting more from all of us than they ever gave to their victims combined. I am definitely NOT against the death penalty...and UNFORTUNATELY he wont hang for this one, but maybe he will get the shot for other ones he may be tied to. The only comfort I get from this is that 1) he is no longer a threat to society and 2) he will ROT in you know where. I just feel so terrible for her family. I cant imagine what they are thinking and feeling because me...I am mad as heck that that little woman was murdered the way she was. This is worse than a lifetime movie.

I agree with you thatlisagirl, the good part is he will be off the street, the sad part is there will be another, another and another....
There are a lot of sicko's out there.

What about her dog Ella? The news said Ella was found but was she unharmed? And where is Ella now?

And what about poor Dandy - the suspect's dog? Dandy is an innocent and I worry/wonder about Dandy's fate. News articles state that witnesses have seen the suspect and Dandy frequenting trails - so the dog was used to long runs in the woods - now is Dandy in "jail" too? Breaks my heart...

Ella, according to our station, is now with Meredith Emerson's family. Safe.

Dandy -- I'm not sure, so I'm checking. Will let you know ASAP.

Dandy Update:

She (or is it he) is at the DeKalb County Animal Shelter but is not yet available for adoption. For lack of a better word, she is evidence in the case. She is being taken care of and there have been many, many inquiries from individuals and rescue groups about her welfare.

DeKalb Police tell us that Dandy will likely be up for adoption in the near future, but just not yet. They are very aware that local news outlets as well as the shelter itself are getting lots of calls about her.

Will keep you updated. d

Dear Dana,

Thank you soooooo much for the update on Ella and Dandy. I have been trying to get this info for DAYS with no reponse and I truly appreciate your quick response.

Too often dogs are the innocent (and forgotten) victims.

Hopefully officials will realize that Dandy isn't exactly "evidence" and will release him/her for adoption soon so he/she can enjoy running in the woods again!

Thank you again.

Dana, from your media perch, this freak preyed on his victims in "parks" where most jurisdictions prohibit law abiding citizens from having the tools to protect themselves. The law needs to change to allow anyone with a concealed carry permit to carry that weapon ANYWHERE! (sure worked well in a Colorado Church) Criminals dont obey the law...he displayed that baton ...Start poking at the legislature to make our CCP to OK carry in ANY PUBLIC VENUE!
YOU need to learn to shoot yourself, the world is dangerous and getting more so! Because the CJ system is broken.

Unfortunately, carrying a gun will not help the situation. Its the element of surprise that got poor Meredith. I'm sure if she saw it coming she would have been able to over power him with her self defense skills. I go to walks with my dogs in the park as well and I have a permit to carry a gun. If I was grabbed from behind I surely would not have enough time to grab my gun and would also be a good invitation for someone to grab and turn it on me. So, being able to carry in a public place is not the answer. And..I really don't know the answer. It's so sad. Nobody is safe anywhere anymore. I remember when I was a kid I was tossed out early in the morning, played all day with the kids in the neighborhood, called in for dinner and our parents were not worried about us. Times have changed and its awful. I worry about my son constantly and he is 23 and on his own. There are way to many sick people out there and for some reason many of them are in the southern part of this country. I will NOT go walking with my dogs anywhere anymore. Our freedom has been taken away not only by 911, but by our own people here in this country that are sick. Thank you for letting me vent.

enjaem, I must disagree! That gun is the universal equalizer, he was known to be carrying an ASP baton. Her intermediate level martial arts skills( blue belt) may have allowed her to getaway and blow a hole in his chest. To say "carrying a gun will not help the situation" is giving into the THUGS.
Be polite, be professional, have a plan to kill everyone you meet!

You sound like a nut! I have no plan to kill everyone I meet. What a way to live. I hope you don't live near me. I walk with my Rottie in a park and thought I was safe, but will not any longer. It is the element of surprise. He seemed like a nice old man....and then WHAM. A gun wouldn't have helped. There are laws we must obey and that is not to carry in public places. I will not carry at a school, library, public courthouse. Because others (thugs) go ahead and do that doesn't make it right for us to. We have a right to bear arms and yes there are times if I have to run to a store at night...I will carry in and out of the store. I am a female, I keep aware of my surroundings, but should anyone attempt to hurt me in any way, they have had it and that is a public parking lot. When you go for a nice stroll with your dog you usually don't think you are going to be attacked. I grew up in NY. None of this crap went on there and I know no one that lives there that has been killed, raped, broken into or robbed. I will not walk around "anywhere" at night if I don't have to. Put me in NY and I'll walk around the city until 3 in the morning. In NY you cannot carry a gun unless you own a business, carry a large amount of cash for a business or some other logical reason. It's the law...its the ones that don't obey the law that have the weapons. Georgia is definitely a crazy state. I have never in my life heard of more violence anywhere I've lived. It's awful here, but I made it my home 20 years ago and raised my son here. It's just the way it is and I nor you can do a damn thin

Well Ma'am! I find it interesting that YOU lowered YOURSELF to name calling! I am not nuts and I may live next door, you could do alot worse !! If you don't like GA and long for the peace and quite of NY load you and your hound in the car... I95 will get you there and you can feed from the govt teet where you depend on the govt for everything. If you really watch teh news you'll see why we have a violence issue... ever notice the RACE of the perpetrators? NY has thousands of police officers, but they have also had their share of high profile cases. NY'ers are a pretty zany bunch, elected a interloper as a Senator only to have her abandon her post to follow her ego and run for president.Allowed Rudy to VIOLATE the constitution and pas draconian gun laws that only effected teh citizens that chose to obey those laws. Lady I carry a gun EVERYWHERE I GO! I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6! that seemed to work well for the brassy lady in Colorado who noted the threat, advanced on teh target and KILLED that thug in the church

I did not lower myself to name calling. I just read all your rambling blogs which has me quite fearful for those that live here. The writing is on the wall. And....where do you get that I depend on the government for everything? This blog is about Meredith, not about your political views. I suggest you go start your own blog or find one that accepts all this gibberish. Thank you. I am also going to contact Dana Fowle to see if there is anyone to get you deleted from this post.

I'm not as serious as I look on TV. I love to laugh even if it's at my expense. I'm just not very PC. My friends would describe me as "black and white." Not a lot of gray. My co-workers call me Elaine from Seinfeld. I'm generally disheveled and have a messy car. I have really curly hair, but the station doesn't like it that way. I love my husband because he's funny. I also love red wine, rare steak, dark chocolate and strong coffee. I'm Type A, so of course, I wish I were smarter.
