DaleRussell's Blog

by DaleRussell from Let's Be Real

In a way, it was anticlimactic.

For two years, ever since I heard Mona Brewer and Cindy Hall’s stories, ever since I examined the first blush of documents in this case, ever since I began to talk to other Cathedral at Chapel Hill members and ex-members in an attempt to understand the allegations against a well-known preacher, I wanted to do one thing: Sit down, face-to-face with Archbishop Earl Paulk and ask him all the questions ruminating in my head.

All the questions you have asked in this blog.

Are the women who claim you coerced them into a sexual relationship telling the truth?     Why are there so many women telling similar stories?   If the stories are not true, why are the women lying about you?  Did you sexually abuse two children, including your own granddaughter?  If you didn’t - why would these two young women lie?   Did you have sexual relationships with two sets of mothers and daughters?  If not, why would these four women swear under oath that you did?

Are you a sexual predator or the victim of a horrible character assassination?

There is a lot you can tell in a sit-down interview. It is not just the words, but the eyes, the body posture, the tone of voice. You can see it in a TV interview far better than you can read it in a newspaper. But, when trying to gauge someone’s veracity, it is even stronger face to face.

Our first chance to ask questions was rebuffed.  Archbishop Paulk simply turned his back and walked away.

I never spoke to him.

I talked to several family members over those two years, but never once, to the Archbishop.

So, it comes down to a dark night, and a man trying to sneak into jail and bond out, outside of the public eye.

Isn’t that what is at the core of this very case? What did the Archbishop do privately, outside of the public eye?

The original plan was to turn himself in on Wednesday morning, bond out and go straight to court, plead guilty and go home. Outside of the public eye.

As you know, it didn’t work.

There were some who felt strongly that at this point, in this case, secrecy was the last thing in the world that should envelope Archbishop Paulk’s legal troubles. And so we were there to ask questions.

But, it came down to a few seconds, no comments, asking questions over an entourage. Questions that went unanswered.

Two years and still no answers. Not face to face. Not even before a judge Only a meek, “Yes, I am” to the judge’s question: “Are you indeed guilty?”

Guilty of not telling the truth under oath about fathering a child with his brother’s wife.    There were no more questions from the judge; no volunteered answers.

Still, there is a civil suit.  And one last chance for questions.  I won’t get to ask.  But, I will be in the courtroom, waiting, and watching, finally getting a chance to hear his answers.

I’ll let you know what he says.

Dale,
You are such a hypocrite. I wonder how many interviews and comments you would be giving to the news media if you were in EP's position. It's not like you have been an upstanding, impartial journalist in all of this. Only the ratings matter to you. EP is doing exactly what his attorneys have advised him to do and you would be doing the same. Stop the hypocrisy. Who made you the person who gets to determine what information is shared with the public. Why should he do an interview with you that could be used against him in his upcoming trial. He would be stupid to do so. You just seem to want be judge and jury over this matter. Let it play out in court. Every man deserves a fair trail. Stop trying to influence it before it starts. Everyone is not buying into your sensationalism. Whatever happened to "fair and balanced" reporting.

first,

I'm afraid you missed my point. Of course, someone awaitng trial has to be careful about what they say.
But, two years since these allegations first surfaced and the Cathedral community has not heard one word from their founder.
They want to hear from him and many expressed on this blog and to me that they hoped after the guilty plea he would speak to the Cathedral community.
That's all.
Who made me the person to get the information? That's my job. I'm a journalist. And no other media outlet in town has bothered to cover the story.

Whether its 2 years or 20 years, there is still a court case which is approaching and why on earth would anyone facing a trial say anything that may be used against them in court. Your concern is not for those in the Cathedral community. Your concern is only for Fox news.

Dale, it seems like firsthandtoo doesn't understand the work of investigative reporting. It is about uncovering the truth. The many first hand experiences of persons who were abused by Earl Paulk and his continued denials really demand that any reporter worth his salt would seek an opportunity to speak face to face with the man in the center of the whole mess. Dale, you were trying to offer Earl Paulk a chance to speak for himself, to answer the accusations personally. He is apparently afraid to look straight into the cameras and explain the answers to those hard questions. I think we know why now. Instead he sent his nephew/son to speak for him and the family. Of course this also brought his daughter and granddaughter forward to tell what they also experienced in that family from their father and grandfather. (To be continued)

(Continued) firsthandtoo thinks that it is your job to care for the members of the Cathedral. Actually, Dale, caring for the flock is supposed to be the job of Earl Paulk, the “Archbishop” of that beleaguered congregation. He is derelict in his duties. In fact, you have done more to care to the people affected by that “ministry” than most of their so-called pastors. I do appreciate that David Huskins has spoken out about the character of Earl Paulk to explain why the ICCC had to expel him from his oversight among them. (Which brings up the question, why does he retain the title Archbishop now that he was deposed of that office? (To be continued)

(Continued) Of course, thousands have fled that place; so the members you have “cared for” are no longer members. Many left years ago before you were the one reporting. They have had no redress to their grievances against Earl Paulk and that “ministry”. But your reports and the blog of now nearly 5000 posts have offered an opportunity for many to express their hurt and disillusionment with Earl Paulk’s ministry. (To be continued)

(Continued) The very fact that EP avoids face to face up close and personal conversation already speaks volumes. If I had been falsely accused of anything like multiple adulteries, intergenerational fornication and child sex I would have done most anything to clear my name. I would welcome a camera to show my face as I answered the hard questions and explained myself. But to scurry away like a roach when the kitchen light comes on, to slink into the darkness, to surround ones self with mindless lackeys while hurling denials from the safety of a pulpit...that bespeaks a guilty conscience to me. Narcissism is an excessive self love to the hatred of everyone else. Narcissists are overly concerned about appearances, not reality. I appreciate your tenacity in getting the truth out. Although it was unsatisfying (the man should have been hauled off to jail) yet, it was clearly the end of that man's influence over many lives. EP disgraced himself. He will now live to see the legacy he will leave behind: lies, broken families, adultery, pedophilia, corruption…His cronies will also bear his shame. They will stick together a while; they have nowhere else to flee and few left to fleece.

Dale,
I was interested in firsthandtoo’s comment to you: “Your concern is not for those in the Cathedral community. Your concern is only for Fox news”. Huh? Does this person and others like him/her think that it is the job of an investigative reporter to be "concerned" for people who have put up with these credible allegations and Paulk shenanigans for decades? Reporting what you have found out and seeking for more information (since the scandals involve child sex, adultery, perjury, to name a few…) seem to me to fall under the rubric of public service. It is similar to the work of reporters who investigated and reported on Watergate. A healthy society needs watchdogs or sentinels to keep things above board and upright. I think of Senator Grassley’s investigation of a number of high profile wealthy ministries. If these ministries are above board, honest, persons of integrity they should have nothing to hide. In the past Jim Bakker of PTL was investigated, tried and found wanting. He lashed out at the reporters at first. But after his quilt was confirmed and he was sentenced, he wrote the book “I Was Wrong” admitting that the fault lay with him. I hope Dale that you will keep up the tenacious pursuit of truth. I am fairly confident that “Archbishop” Earl Paulk will continue to evade direct answers to those hard questions, even after the court cases are far gone. We may rest content though that he is now a convicted felon of the one charge with physical evidence.

firsthandtoo,

A "hypocrite"? Do you even know the meaning of the word? How can a man be a hypocrite who is being clear and forthcoming about what he has been able to uncover as a reporter.

Like it or not, reporters jobs are to follow stories and report them to the public. When they find there is a fire beneath the smoke, it's their right and charge to make what they've found known.

And to the point of Earl Paulk not speaking because of the pending lawsuit, well, finally he knows how the countless people he and CHHC have sued have felt. He is simply reaping what he's sown and if you ask me he's getting off lightly.

Long before the lawsuits against him, Earl Paulk had ample opportunity to speak TRUTHFULLY to the media in response to the stories leaked out, the ones he and his band of controllers tried to squelch. (And, thank god they did become public so we'd have hope that your charade at the Cathedral would be exposed in all its sickeningly abusive detail.)

EP has never had any interest in the real truth coming out, because he wants to hide behind the delusion he's created. And, he knows he is guilty, guilty, guilty. If he was a man of integrity, he wouldn't have to worry about what he says even with a pending lawsuit. If he's done nothing wrong, there should be nothing to worry about.

Trust me - there are far more people who know the truth and want it to be exposed than the handful of cling-ons left at the vacuous, vulturous cathedral you want to "protect." And, what a laughable aim that must be, to "protect" the ones you folks have manipulat

firsthandtoo, are you kidding me? Are you blind? Did you not hear your bishop plead guilty to perjury? Do you not know that his lie to the court was about one adulterous affair that was brought to light only because of hard evidence (DNA)? Have you not heard about all of the other allegations of sexual misconduct over the years? Could they all be false? Is Earl Paulk's own granddaughter lying about molesting her when she was a child? Sexual predators should be publicly identified and prosecuted no matter who they are so that they cannot re-offend! What is wrong with you? Earl Paulk's sins have surely found him out! Finally!

Read First Timothy and see if Earl Paulk qualifies to be a bishop. Even upon his admission of one adulterous affair, he doesn’t even qualify to be a deacon.

Consider this:

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them. 1 Tim 3:1-5 NIV

It sounds like EP to me. But what about you? Keep reading.

In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 2 Tim. 4:1-4 NIV

Are you getting sound doctrine at CHHC? Maybe you are just there to suit your own desires? Just wondering.

Dale: If you will take a few moments to look more closely at all involved including Bobby and Mona Brewer you might uncover all of the truth. The public and every cathedral member has a right to know the whole truth. The surface has only been stratched with your reports thus far. I challenge you to find and reveal the whole truth. Anyone who has been at the cathedral for any length of time can tell you that If you look a littler closer it will be easy for you to discover that the paulks were not the only ones engaging in abusive and criminal behavior at the cathedral. Many of the ones in the news aided/supported the Paulks in their abusive actvities until it no longer benefited them. The Paulks may be the ones in the spotlight but I encourage you to look deeper and talk to some of the "regular" people and you will discover a whole new truth that you have either chosen to ignore or that hasn't been shared with you. Believe me thereis enough guilt and blame to go around. Find all of the truth and report it we all need to heal.

AreYouCrazy
Jan 28, 2008 | 9:42 PM

Tell the whole Truth...You just don't seem to get it. This is about a 'pastor/bishop/archbishop who has abused his position in every way possible. My goodness, just the children alone are enough to leave that place and never look back. How would you feel if Jessica or Penni was you child or grandchild? Would you still be so charitable? This man has committed CRIMES. Just like any other pedophile, he needs to be charged, found guilty and sentenced as well as registered as a sex offender in the community. Haven't you been taught over there that John told the king he couldn't have his brother's wife? Guess ep is better than the king and John, huh? The whole truth is God is tired of the sheep being devoured by so-called shepherds!
Dale, keep up the good work until everything the canker worm, palmer worm, ep worm, don worm and every other kind of worm has destroyed has been restored! Rest well. Thank you for a job well done.

Actually, I do understand what “First” is saying. If I were involved in a civil suit, I wouldn’t talk to the press until the entire matter has been resolved in court. Bishop Paulk admitted guilt to lying under oath about not having sex with his sister-in-law. The issue addressing Mona’s suit has not gone to trial yet. Yes, people want to hear from him, but do you really expect the man to get on TV and say something that might be played back during the trial. Let the courts do their job and then see what happens. I understand everyone’s anger, but don’t be unreasonable. Wait until the trial is over and see what the end is going to be.

I don't know about Bobby Brewer, but I do know about most every other person (women) who have been slapped with lawsuits and they were not involved in underhanded dealings. The word is "victim" because they were taken advantage of and manipulated for others' gain and satisfaction.

If we want to talk about blame, we can steer to those of you who have stayed and paid to keep this charade going and helped to cover up abuse that included molestation of children.

OK,since we are looking at Reality TV, then let's be real. I've been an investigative reporter in Atlanta since 1981. I rarely wear a jacket. Too hot. I love chasing crooked politicians. I hate surveillance stories. Too hot in the van. (See picture) My desk is a mess. I don't smoke. I do drink. I have a politically incorrect sense of humor and a little problem with authority. (I'm working on that) And, I never get my expense reports in on time.
