So did you see the story our photographer Dan Gardner shot this morning on Crazy Carl’s Cricket Farm in Franklin, NH? They breed millions of crickets there...Click here to check it out.

Normally I'm not a fan of insects or 'bugs' of any kind... but I'm a little partial to these guys. I say 'guys' because it is typically the male crickets rubbing their wings together that make those loud sounds. (They are usually trying to attract a female).

You may have heard this before... but in the sound of crickets there lies a weather connection. The wamer it is the faster they chirp... the cooler it is the slower... and they generally don't chirp at all when it's below 55 degrees fahrenheit.

You can actually approximate the temperature by listening to the chirps of a cricket since the frequency of their chirping varies with the ambient air temperature. If you count the number of chirps in 15 seconds and then add 37... it will give you the temperature in degrees fahrenheit (within a few degrees). I'm not sure if humidty (or more water vapor in the air) has any effect on this. Here is a link for more info if you'd like:

I don't know about you... but I'm ready to start hearing the sound of crickets again! Unfortunately I just don't see it happening in the near future... longer range models are keeping us in a cooler than average pattern until the first of April.

Enjoy those 'chilly' Easter egg hunts again this year!

Cindy,

You're not exactly knowledgeable about cricket reproduction. Males dont start calling for a mate until August. Their calls are most abundant in the Fall. I have heard a few linger chirps as late as mid November, Probably due to global warming. I know alot about insects. Some of which I feed to spiders. I think a pet spider would do you good. Cure your possible arthropohobia...or at least arachnophobia.

Cindy,

Congadulations on your new baby and welcome back. This is off topic even though I did see the segment about crickets. What I thought was so funny was you standing next to one of the Harlem Globe Trotters and you asked him how tall he was and when he said he was 6'7" your comment was pricesless "yes you are" I couldn't stop laughing.

BTW I didn't know you stood on a box. LOL How tall are you?

Thanks,and welcome back,
Jovan

I laughed this morning when reading your comments! You are right Mr. Ozone... I am certainly not knowledgeable about cricket reproduction- I just like the weather connection.
jovanone thanks for the well wishes... I prefer 'vertically challenged' to 'short'... but I'm about 5' 2" and 1/2 or so- definitely taller than your average 'gibbon'!
Have a great day!

Hi Cindy, I see you researched Gibbon height. From the info you provided, you do not have an insect phobia. I have a habit of overstating. Sorry.

I apologized to Kevin recently. Before long, I'll be apologizing to everyone at Fox. Have a great day!

Hi Cindy,

If Gibbons looked as pretty as you, I'll take all you've got. LOL

Of course she looks taller than her 5'2" frame Kev. The other morning she gave away her secret of her on aire stand. She's on a box...
She stands 10 feet tall as far as I'm concerned. You are a welcomed sight in the mornings Ms. Fitzgibbon. Stay off of 128 you are going to cause an accident.

cindy, you think you are short........ i am 4'11. guess who is vertically challenged ? me but, i never let my size prevent me from doing anything. i drove a 35' mbta bus for years , did all the gutter cleanings in our home, all the painting , wallpapering.and anything else that needed to be done. upto and including putting an antenna on our 2 story roof. as well as bringing up 4 daughters....one who is also 4'10" , says she can't stand her size. I tell her she will get used to it, someday. also, welcome back cindy !
