....Bill Belechick secures his place as the most prescient coach in NFL history.  Has it occurred to anyne else that the simple act of drafting Matt Cassel was, statistically dubious at best?  He ran only a handful of plays his entire college career, and hadn't started a football game since his senior year in high schook in 1999 (That's right folks, the last freakin' millenium!!)

And yet, taking over for injured Tom Brady last week, he threw 18 for 23 with over 150 yards and one touchdown.  He hit Randy Moss for a 51 yard strike.  He "general'ed" a running game that put two backs over 50 yards in 10 carries each (Yep, that's over a 5 yard a carry average for both Maroney and Morris.).

Now, I'm a season ticket holder.  I live with a woman who would take your life for insulting the Patriots.  I go way back....

But what is this saying about the Patroits organization?  This is scarin' me!!!  Bill, I'm impressed.

Bill Belechick has already secured his place in history. He really has nothing to prove to anyway. He just has a team to coach and games to win. Plus, "last millenium" is a pretty vague way to put it, I'd rather say 9 years ago, than make it sound longer than it actual is. (As if not starting a game since high school needs any more assistance than what it says)

But win or lose, it will only help or hurt the team and won't diminish Belechick's status as a coach.

Chip.

Here's my take on Cassell. He has the arm to make the throws and the recievers and backs to catch the passes. What can make him excell in his career is his abilty to tuck and run with the ball. He made a key 3rd down run last week just when I was screaming for him to and he ran for about 8 yards. He can make it difficult for opposing coaches to game plan against him if he they have to worry about containing the scramble. He has some good play action skills and that will freeze the DB's as Brady has been able to do. If he does decide to run he needs to give himself up and avoid taking the hits he was taking in the pre-season games.

I think the Pats will do fine against the Jets and win by at least 10.

lafko...Jets game is about defense, not Cassel!!!

Preseason don't count. You don'[t have a "winning gameplan". You have a "learnkng gameplan". They are different.

Chip.

I think the offense will have to play a bigger role than the defense in the Jets game. I see the Jets trying to get a sound running game with Thomas and the other backs. Cassell will have to engineer at least 2 touchdown drives and 2 field goal drives. The defense will have to stack the middle and have good 1 on 1 tackling on the edge on runs. teh secondary will need to limit Cotchery's ability to make big yards after the catch.

I know the pre-season don't count I've seen some football games myself. I was just saying Cassell was taking some unnecessary hits in the meaningles games and he can't take those in the games that matter.

I believe Cassel has the physical skills to fill in for Brady. Will he make the reads as quickly? I doubt he will at first. I have confidence in the coach's ability to spot talent at all positions, including qb. In fact, should Cassel go down. Guitterez would step in and the machine might sputter, but would motor on. Not to worry.

All good and passionate points here, but I'm going to refrain from comments until after the game Sunday...can't wait!
