As I watch the commentary following John McCain's acceptance speech last night, I can't avoid thinking.worrying that the choice we have this November is between entertainers and leaders.  I watched VB this morning and can completely understand his position about John McCain's speech last night, I just can't accept it.  I mean, why wouldn't VB say what he said?  What does he do?  He's an entertainer.  He plies his craft by speaking in front of a camera.  He knows that good delivery is more important than good content.  It's what he takes home 7 figures to do.  why wouldn't it be imnportant if folks pay that much money for it.

That may be a damned good decision in television, but it is a horrible decision in national leadership.  The future of our country has best not be based on how entertaining a man is, but how effective he is.  Did John McCain deliver like Jay Leno in his monologue?  Not by a damn sight...did he give us substance?  He sure did.  He talked about taxes and his stand on them.  He talked about national security, and his stand and his record on that.  He talked about the burden placed on citizens by oil prices and gave his solutions on that.  He spoke about education and told us he'd give parent choices back, and said he'd expect that underperforming schools be brought up to standard.  He said he'd put in place a system that rewarded excellent teachers and assisted the poor ones in finding other employment. He spoke of children with disabilities and his commitment to them.

But equally as important to me, he spoke of loyalty and commitment, of service and sacrifice, of success born of hard work and core values.  And he told me how he evolved from a selfish man to a man of service.  Now, I don't spend alot of my time worrying about my courage or my ability to prevail.  I got over that a long time ago.  I'm proud of who I am and how I've gotten here.

But I was truly humbled last evening.  Here's a man who lived through worse than I saw, who told me it was a blessing.  Here's a man who admits to the arrogance and narcissism of youth, and is thankful he was transformed.

John McCain didn't speak to me about hope, he embodied it.  He didn't inspire me by his words, but by his deeds.  I do not have to judge his promises; I need only look to his accomplishments.  Is he fallible?  Yep, he told us so.  But so aren't we all.  What he told me was how his fallibility was tested by misfortune and how he rose above it.

VB is right.  John McCain is a lousy entertainer...

Chip, The entertainers You speak about had Senator McCain buried the night before when Gov. Palin Spoke. According to all the mouth pieces he (McCain) would never be able to live up to the speech Sarah Palin gave. This morning listening to VB brake down every little stumble and mistake was harder to watch than his so called criticism of the speech. I heard a good speech and when replayed I still heard a good speech. He and Cindy have a beautiful family.

When fenwaydav calls it a good speech, VB Goudie better look in the mirror.

I commend you on an open mind. As an aside, Dave, did you see Rep. Mary Fallin from Okla? Remind you of anything you heard from my wife? :-)

Compared to Sarah, Senator McCain's speech was sub-par, HOWEVER, I was not interested in being entertained, I was listening for his message, and that came across loud and clear!!! I think he is the real deal!!! I see Governor Palin and Senator McCain as a great match!

Chip, I consider myself a good writer, (although sometimes people challenge that). My friends say I should be on stage. This is the reason I disagree with them. Amongst friends I can be a regular Henny Youngman, with strangers I sometimes become a babbling idiot, even if I read prepared material. I don't know if you have ever wrote into mail call in the morning. I have and VB reads my stuff quite often. (Until recently I was David in Boston, I have just started using Fenwaydav.) He takes the liberty almost always to edit my piece. VB is what we call in the business a Control Queen. He heard John McCain speak and it wasn't perfect to his liken. His delivery wasn't good. You and I heard something different. I heard an Old Salt give the speech of his life. I never said I didn't like John McCain. I have asked some of my democratic friends if they watched any of the RNC? (and please don't assume they are all Gay) Most responded no. I told them and any one else, you can't give a opinion if you don't know the other sides views.

Chip, I'm going to give you a thought I voiced last night in the chat that occurred during McCain's speech: "Sure, John McCain isn't so good at public speaking. But, Barack Obama reminds me of a motivational speaker. The ones you usually see on infomercials telling you that you too can make millions by working for yourself from home."

I'd rather have someone in office who's not a public speaker but a good leader. And, if you think about it, the very fact that John McCain has been in office so long without the public speaking skills that Obama and even Palin possess testifies to the fact that he must be doing SOMETHING right, no?

I was going to write a seperate blong on this...there was anothre subtlety last night. John McCain attacked his own party in his speech, and he got thunderous applause from the delegates.

Maybe the change he's addressing is coming faster than folks think?

Chip, if they let Sarah Palin bring her hunting gear to Washington, you can bet that there'll be plenty of change happening. And as to McCain attacking his own party and getting applause, I'm really not surprised at that. People (the everyday ones, not politicians and pundits) are sick of government. Sick to death of it, to put it bluntly. So, when he attacked his own party as well, that wasn't really for the delegates. That was more for the people at home, I think, but any way you slice it, I'm sure the delegates have picked up on the "fed up" feeling from us regular folk. (And besides, he kinda had to after Palin addressed how she took on her own party the night before.)

It is uncommon and highly hopeful, Xantun. It shows both is charactoer and his party's readiness to lead.

Seen Obama criticizing his fellow Dems for their share of the gridlock? I think not. In his career he has voted 96.9% party line (his ads criticize McCain for 90.....duh).

Actually, all I've seen from Obama lately is the attack ads about John McCain's 90% voting thing. But, I'm hoping that other people picked up on that subtlety and realize that while McCain isn't shouting the catchphrase, he means it. Almost without a doubt more than Obama, who's using it as a campaign slogan.

There is a neat website, if you've never seen it: ontheissues.org

It gives you bullets on candidates records.

Check out Palin...then check out Obama. Barack's flip flipping is very evident when you see the facts chronologically. Excellent resource.

I'll have to check that out, Chip...I've seen evidence as it happens on both him and Biden courtesy of the EFF, but my chronology skills ain't so good these days.
