OK, folks, after a few days of hearing, from the sainted pundits on every freakin' news channel in existence, about questions raised by the pregnancy of Sarah Palin's OLDEST daughter, and what that says about both her  Mom's suitability as a parent and a Vice President, it's time to speak about Sarah Palin's YOUNGEST daughter, and what her behavior says about her mother's family values.

How many folks here were as touched as I was watching this young girl hold her infant brother?  How many other folks here smiled the smile only a loving parent can smile when she licked her hand and fixed this little boy's hair repeatedly?

How many of us asked ourselves, "Where did this little girl learn this love and compassion?"  I didn't.  As a father and parent, I knew exactly where she learned it.  She learned it from her mother.  You see, at that age, children are a reflection almost solely on their parents.  They do not experience adult rational thought.  They do not question the meaning of their activities. They mimick the behavior of their same sex parent.  When children become teenagers, they begin to differentiate and think on their own. They question the wisdom of their parents.  They rebel.  It's what teenagers do.  Got teenagers?  If you do, you know.

You see folks, the pregnancy of Bristol Palin is a reflection of her rebellion and not her mother's values alone, nor of her effectiveness as a Mom.  It's just not that easy.

But the behavior of that little girl is a direct reflection on her parents....

Where are the pundits this morning?

Chip--That was just the cutest thing! I was laughing when I saw her doing that. Also, when she was sitting there holding him on her lap--Just the look in her eyes told you that she absolutely adores him. You are absolutely right--she has seen this love over and over. I also saw the look in her husband's eyes--he truly loves Sarah. He had the proudest look on his face. ALso, did you happen to the little girl walk over to her mom at the end of her speech when Sarah and John McCain were waving to the crowd? I don't know what she whispered to her mom, but, I have a feeling she had to go potty--Mom had that panicked look in her eyes, like uh oh, can someone help me here for a second.

And, yes, although my kids are no longer teens, I have most definitely been there.... there have been times when I am just the mother, I don't know anything. Amazing how I've gotten this far in life being as stupid as they think you are; actually, even more amazing is how smart they think they are and know EVERYTHING! Funny thing, though, is now that they are all mothers themselves, they have ALL seemed to pick up "my bad parenting skills." I hope that's a good sign! I am sure Sarah's life is NO different that any of ours, either. Kids are kids, no matter where they're from. But it is obvious that there is a lot of love in that family!!!

You hit it right on the nose again Chip....

I too was laughing when the lil one was wiping her lil brothers head. I think we are all wise enough to know a "staged moment," and this was the exact opposite. As a matter of fact I never saw a single "staged" moment through out the entire speech. It was brilliant.

Once again, very well stated, and right on target!!!

Of course I would have enjoyed seeing this myself...and would have had you not given me my melatonin at 7:00! ;-)~ We need a DVR, babe!

Sheesh, the Democratically leaning press is accusing me of drugging my wife and failing to buy her the DVR she's entitled to....

OK...OK...I give in!!!

Chip, I was in and out of the speech last night because I was working! But this morning, I put the kids on the bus, suffered through a 4 1/2 mile run and then went home and watched every second of that speech. And when that little girl stroked her brothers head and his hair, I almost lost it. It touched me so deeply. I thought it was the most beautiful gesture. So pure and so telling about their upbringing. Chip.. you hit a homerun with this one!

Chip, did you happen to slip the pundits some of Okie's melatonin? That could explain where they are today.

This was an even cuter moment than when Obama's daughters took over the mic after Michelle's speech and talked to their dad via satellite...That one seemed almost scripted, actually.

(And forget DVR. Just get a DVD recorder. MUCH more handy!)

Chip...You are expressing exactly what I felt... looking at that little child as she held this young baby and wet her hand to brush his hair down...what a sweet loving little girl and the youngest at that...All of that love comes from her home, Mom, Dad and sisters and brothers...it was so touching and from a little one herself...Thanks for your nice blog....

A 8 year olds don't use teleprompters...and 8 year olds don't use teleprompter....

The only thing unrehearsed..and as such the most revealing.

Xan! You always come up with some of the best lines and great advice!

I didn't see Obama's daughters on the mic either. Can't seem to stay up past 9.

Geeze I miss all the good stuff!

Kim,

Why don't you and Marna just go shopping and make me get it...

Why do I say that? In this blog? Because the answer to the critics who question if she can be VP and mother have lost sight of the fact that the wedding vows still say "honor and cherish"...How can you do that without taking care of things when she needs them? Even as inconsequential as a DVR...or as important as the upbringing of children.

Of course, what child is NOT enriched by his or her mother's success?

Well, no one answered Chip when he asked where the pundits were today...Someone had to!

Staying up really late isn't all it's cracked up to be anyway, Okie...Although when I tried actually watching one of the convention coverage channels, Hillary put me to sleep. So now, I stick with the highlights on the news.

Chip, a DVD recorder is cheaper anyway...You don't have to sign up for DVR service through your TV provider. I'm loving mine, and beating the heck out of 'em.

Okie, if you wanna go shopping for one, we can always hit Best Buy in Framingham ;)

Chip - as usual, you gave a great post and said it so well. You're right, you CAN'T fake that kind of love and genuine caring. A lot of young people treat babies with an "eew, get it away from me" attitude, let alone one with Downs that makes it "different" and "eeew".

The problem with a DVD recorder (unless you have more than one) is that you can't tape two shows at once... We have a DVR and it is great - you can watch a recorded show while you tape 2 more all at once. Might even add a DVD recorder as well for those rare nights when there is too much good stuff on... Believe it or not, I actually manage to read the paper AND talk with my wife while all that is going on!

Real, I've got 2 DVD recorders. So, taping more than one thing isn't a problem. One has a VCR built-in as well, for upgrading all those old VHS home movies to DVD. Makes my life a lot easier than running it through the computer!

LOL RealAmerican...the only talking Chip and I do are on the blogs!!!

Hmmm...Xan, if we hit BestBuy...you'd have to stick around to give me a lesson! I'm fairly technical, but some of these gadgets just boggle my brain!

Can you use a VCR, Okie? A DVD recorder works much the same way. You just have to remember to finalize a disc when you're done recording on it, or it won't play in any other player. (And only use RW (Re-Writable) discs for shows you'd want to tape every week.)

Gotta wait until after the tattoo convention to hit Best Buy though...I may find stuff I want and then not have the $$ for my tattoo!

Hi Chip

Great blog!! I watched the speech and have to say that watching Piper (I think that is her name)was priceless. How touching and loving. Whether you agree with Sarah Palin or not you can tell that not only is she a proud mom, but her kids are husband are just as proud of her. I think in a good way, she is going to be a name we remember, even if she does not win the vice presidency. She is determined and seems to be sincere in what she wants to acomplish.
Good job for her to not back down and to acknowledge she faces the same struggles as any family good and not so good.

One of the things that intelligent voter do is to look at what candidates DO, not only what they SAY.

When what they say and DO match, you gotta vote for em!!!

Okie, I caught McCain's speech. He started off kinda slow, but eventually caught my full attention. Then again, we already knew that he's not really a public speaker. (I still want to know how all those protesters made it into the audience though!)

And yes, a DVD recorder is very easy to use for the TV. If you get one that's a combo, there's even a VCR to DVD dubbing button you can hit to do the translation. (Think of it as a VCR for the 21st century. FABULOUS invention, just ask my grandmother!)
