Chip's Blog

At a time when my already slackening faith in our Free Press was at what seemed to me an all-time high, I get slapped in the face with another abomination.  John McCain's selected running mate, Sarah Palin's 17 year old daughter is pregnent.  Major national news...not.  I am equally disheartened...maybe more so...when I see news anchors and commentators say that this issue is inconsequential, yet report on it incessantly.  The salacious being repeated by the mindless.

Now tonight, when Sarah Palin will give an address that will define her for what truly matters, her ideals, values and record as the Governor of Alaska, our alleged journalists are already focusing in on the fact that her daughter Bristol's boyfriend, the father of her baby, will be in attendance.  Not the issues, not the future, the gossip.

Now, as a parent, I understand a few things.  I have been made extremely aware recently of just how powerless I am (we are) in the face of decisions made by our "grown up" children.  Folks, I'm here to tell you that you can teach values till you're blue in the face, and still have your kids make big...very big..mistakes.  I'm also here to tell you that our children have humbled us by placing us in the position where our only ethical outlet is to support them after mistakes are made, in an effort to guide them toward the personal resolution of their issues.

Good parenting is not perfection; it's persistence.

Here's what I think:  I think Sarah Palin, tonight, on the most important professional day of her life so far, is being a mother first, and a damned good one under the circumstances.  I do not believe that Bristol's boyfriend is being flown in as a political ploy.  As a political ploy, it just plain stinks.  It continues a story, being used by her opposition to attack her very belief system, by her actions.  The "savvy" political solution to "Unwed Mother-gate" is to allow it to die a natural death.  Cause of death?  Boredom...Inconsequence.

Instead, at risk to her candidacy for Vice President of the United States, she is being a mother first.  Ya see folks, there's another explanation...one that doesn't sell advertising time, or make the careers of "talking heads".

Sarah Palin, at risk to her career advancement, is "walking the walk" of family values.  Whether or not she believes in her daughter's actions some 5 months ago, she is accepting the father of her grandchild into her family on the most significant evening of their lives so far. To exclude him is lousy family values!!!

And for all the years of education....not a single reporter or commentator in the Boston broadcast press has seen it, or had the decency to report on it.

Ya...I'm outraged...you bet!!

Sarah Palin will knock it out of the park tonight, folks. I can feel it in my bones.

I'll admit that I was nonplussed when I first heard that the "BLEEPIN redneck" would be at the RNC tonight. But you know what? I trust her judgment. I think she's a wise lady who knows exactly what she's doing.

Mark my words: no matter how the dems slag Sarah Palin's speech after it's been dispensed, there will be no doubt that a sincere, driven woman spoke with a fiery passion that will turn 'Hill'y Clinton's' pants-suit green with envy! ;^)

I, too, am aggravated to no end that the focus of the media is on Palin's daughter and redneck boyfriend, rather than the relevant political agenda.

And your assumption of a pure motive of family values is a good one...but I stated it in the living room of our home…and I will state it again here...you can't begin to convince me that decisions of this nature from this point forward are her own.

Both conventions are carefully planned and "scripted" right down to the keynote speakers...

It’s obvious SOMEONE thought it a good idea for the boy to be there, I'm just not fully convinced it was Gov. Palin's "family values" that made it happen.

Could "the convention" have as much influence on her, as my rantings in the living room have on you?

MY point...I don't think the "party" would have wanted him there. I think they would have wanted this story to die a natural death, and blowing wind back in it doesn't accomplish it. Part of her reputation, and the part that appeals to me, is the fact that she is a maverick. Until proven otherwise, I'm giving HER the credit.

(Ya think her speech tonight will keep you up like "House, MD" did last night? :-)

My point is...the media and people in general thrive on the gossip factor. This story has formed a life of its own, that will obviously continue to be the buzz, until there is something substantial to talk about. Introduce the young chap, put a face on the gossip...and only then will people be able let it die and have closure on the matter.

May her speech rise to the occasion, that it will not only close this chapter...but, begin a new one. Hopefully a gripping chapter that will outline the reasons I should pledge my support to her/their effort.

(We shall see)

My fear is that the liberally biased media will ignore the substance of the speeck (BECAUSE it gives you reason to vote for her) and focuses on the face of the "redneck" boyfriend....

Using salacious gossip to subvert public awareness of a sound conservative agenda.

Chip...how many conservatives do you know actually rely on the liberal media for their source of information?! ;-)~

As you know, Chip, I am the mother of 3 adult daughters(33, 31 and 29) as well as the grandmother to 6 beautiful babies, ranging in age from 10 1/2 year old twins to 8 week old Isabella. God knows I did MY best as a mother to lead my daughters in the right direction. Unfortunately, as you have stated here, "you can teach values till you're blue in the face, and still have your kids make BIG...very big... mistakes!" Oh, how well do I know that! For years, I beat myself up over such mistakes! I have finally come to realize that no matter what you say or do, they WILL do as they please! That certainly doesn't make me any less effective as a parent--it only forces me to work that much harder!!!! And, Yes, Chip, PERSISTENCE! You hit the nail right on the head. I will NEVER be smug enough to claim to be the next candidate for "Mother of the Year" but, I will challenge ANYONE who tries to tell me that I wasn't a good mother, in fact, I was and still am, a VERY good mother and grandmother! Our kids' mistakes are theirs mistakes, not ours!!! This whole issue with Sara's daughter's pregnancy is sheer nonsense. It should have absolutely NO bearing on whether or not she will be effective as our country's next VP. Did Jimmy Carter's family's nonsense influence his effectiveness as a President? What about Bill Clinton's family? His behavior as well? I don't think so. Again, as I stated earlier, I was not aware that we live in a perfect world. All those doing the finger pointing should definitely take a good look in the mirror.

I couldn't agree more with what you have just typed above, Donna.
As a daughter,I know I at times gave my parents a run for thier money, and it was by no means due to bad parenting. I made bad decisions on my part. I thank my stars for the great parents I have. And I am doing my best to be the best parent I can be. And here's that word again....PERSISTENCE!

As for Palin, I can not wait for her speech tonight. And I think it is just a given that the cam's will focus on the 'baby daddy.'
But I will be focusing on the speech. And that is all I give a hoot about.

As well it should be, Chrissy! Too bad others don't look at it the same way. Should be interesting to say the least! Can't wait for post-speech media comments(and pix). I wonder--Would this be as big of an issue if she were a he?

Bill survived a formal sexual harassment charge and a stroll in the "cigar shop"...so I'd say NO, it's not the same for men and women. AND he got National Organization for Women endorsement...go figure!!

Chip, I watched every night of the DNC and I do the same with the RNC. I watch most of it on C-Span as not to get the bias reporting. I don't say things to be hateful (most of the time). And contrary to what some people think my distaste for Mrs. Palin has nothing to do with the fact I am gay. Obama and Biden are certainly not my nights is shinning armor. At this stage of the game I'd rather vote for Nader. I will listen to her very carefully with an open mind. And by the way, Republicans are not the friends of my fellow gay friends. It's like a very good friend of mind who is very Christian and claims to love everyone. He complains about this one and that one and I am sure when not with me he will say things about me and my Gay life.

fenwaydav (I can't just say Dave here...I have Daves calling Daves Dave...),

Meaning no disrespect for your lifestyle, but I don't think it's very germaine here. Sure she has been an opponent of "gay marraige" in Alaska, but I doubt she will have any ipact as VP (or as Pres, for that matter) on that particualr issue. I do think she brings a refreshing aproach to personal responsibility that I DO think you'd embrace. Self reliance, personal responsibility and self satisfaction....

Just a thought.

fenwaydav,

I consider myself the face of the average Republican. A guy who believes more in people than government, who wants governments hands out of your wallet, and their judgements out of your life, that the road to success is paved in hard work, not in free rides.

Don't confuse us with extremists, please?

Chip, As I listened to the Gov. of Hawaii, She said the Federal Government is broken. We need John McCain to fix it she said. Wasn't it a Republican there for 8 years? I know you will probally say she means congress. The republicans had control of that till recently.

She was referring to pork spending, duplicitoiusl talk and concerns that sheild perpetrators of crime from the consequences due the victims....often times bipartisan issues.

Her history is one of attacdking misspending and misdeeds exclusive of party affiliation.

(Oops, I was referring to the Governor of ALASKA...)

OK, David, you didn't hear her speak of her accomplishments? In that case, please list for me every reform (read that CHANGE) that Barack Obama has authored.

Sarah Palin decreased the spending of the Governor's office in Alaska, balanced the State budget, leaving a surplus, returned $1200 in surplus money to each taxpayer in Alaska. She was instrumental in the building of the Alaskan natural gas pipeline, which will decrease our dependence on foriegn petroleum products measurably and has been a consistent supporter of drilling for oil in her own state (NB. no NIMBY at her address) to further decrease dependence on foriegn oil (huge reserves there, enough to last our country well into the millenium) and has advocated for renewabled energy resources throughout her career. She ran on a ticket that promised to fight corruption, IN BOTH PARTIES. She, in fact, was instrumental in the indictment of the Chairman of her own party for corrupt actvity.

What part of those accomplishments are you having a hard time understanding, or have you assumed the posture of the classic Democrat...."head in the diaper"?

I have always been somewhat of a fan of Rudy's, but, last night I thought he was way too loud and obnoxious. I was, however, quite impressed with Sarah. I found her to be intelligent, articulate and confident(not arrogant as I heard some say)! I don't care how much coaching she received, if you don't have it, you can't do it!
