As the ongoing saga of Boston Firefighter (folks, it brings bile to my throat to type that, trust me.) Arroyo unfolds, and the public perception of both firefighters in general, and the Jakes on the Boston Fire Department goes down the "crapper", I want to take a minute to tell a story of a guy who didn't take disability.

In 1996, as part of my duties as Fire Chief in my community (I admit, not the worst of those duties....) I had the pleasure of going to Ocala, Fla to attend what is called a "pre-build conference" for an engine we were purchasing from Emergency One.  At the time that I was there, three guys from the Boston Fire Department were also there, working out the final spec's for two engines a ladder and a lighting truck.  Needless to say, we are significantly smaller than the BFD!!!  One of these guys was Kevin Flynn, Head of Maintenance and the brother of Mayor Flynn, the second was a retired Lieutenant who was expert in fire apparatus design and a consultant to Commissioner Stapleton, and a Captain named Hugh Duffy.  Although we worked in seperate rooms, and fought fires in substantially seperate worlds, we dined in the same restaurants, and this old chief became a real fan of Hugh Duffy.  We never stayed in contact, but his story I'llo never forget.

At the first dinner we attended together, he invited me to join him in the hot tub the subsequent morning at 6 AM.  He said it was part of his "rehab" and I willingly agreed.  Now folks, understand that, although this was Florida, it was winter there, and the dawn temperatures were close to frost levels...but we were firefighters...we were men.

When I met Hugh at the hot tub, I asked him about why he was "rehabbing".  He told the following story.  About a year previously, he had been Captain of the House in Brighton.  A fire had come in for a residenttial structure and he was supervising the interior crews who were face to face with a bigtime fire, inside the building.  An unexpected (duh) floor collapse occurred, and he, and another firefighter fell through the floor into the basement.  The other firefighter was a rookie that Captain Duffy was keeping close for his protection.  Both of the men were trapped in the basement.  Hugh told me that the rookie was holding on to his boot, obviously frightenened.  Hugh's back was seriously injured in the fall, and a burning timber was laying on his shoulder.  The scars from the full thickness burn were evident on his shoulders as we sat there.  He couldn't move; he couldn't get out; they were trapped and he was being serioiusly burned.  He never said it, but I know he thought his number was up.  I would have.

Into that basement came a mutual aid crew from Brookline, pouring water on the burning timbers.  Hugh jokingly told of the rookie yelling, "Hey you're gonna drown us!!!"  And the Brookline Jake yelling back, "Do you want to "freakin" (I translate here!!) drown or do you want to "freakin" burn to death?"  Hugh laughingly said, "My rookie didn't say another word till they took us out."

Saved from almost certain death, Captain Duffy spent the next year on extended sick leave, rehabbing himself.  Commissioner Stapleton put him on administrative duty when he was well enough, and was trying to convince him to stay there.  Hugh wanted back "on a company".

When I last heard about Hugh Duffy, he was running "Moon Island", the Boston Fire Department Training Facility.  You see, ladies and gentlemen, the Boston Fire Department, like every other in this Commonwealth, wants more Hugh Duffy's.  None of them want Firefighter Arroyo.

And my request....when you think of the Boston Fire Department, think Hugh Duffy...think Stevie Minehan...please don't think of Arroyo.  He just ain't a "good Jake".

Chip, We both know bad sells the News. Your story would have lasted 1 min. on the nightly news (if that). It might have appeared on page 4 of the Globe or Herald. Just like last years story of the 2 firefighters. Page one the night it happened lead story also. Then thank you goodbye. Ut Oh a week later they found alcohol and drugs and the story hasn't left since. Those poor guys haven't rested since. The fire and their death had nothing to do with drugs and alcohol. Now Arroyo enters the picture. You would think they (the media) could find a dept picture of him instead of burning in our head his almost naked body posing. They have given Mr. Arroyo now every excuse for not coming back to work. There is not a judge in the world that would send him back to the hostile environment that has been created. Hero's like you write about is more the norm.
What happen to the rookie? and is that Stevie Minehan? Thanks Chief....

I have no idea what hapened to the rookie. I'm betting he's just another "good Jake", trained by a good Captain, led by a good Lieutenant on an engine somewhere in Boston. It was Hugh who was hurt that night...

And no, Dave....Stevie Minehan was the Lieutenant of Ladder 15 who died saving the two trapped BFD jakes in that pier fire 15 years ago....An Irish kid from "Dot Ave" who saved two black jakes...May God cradle his soul...

And before you call me a hero....General Schwarzkopf had a saying I love...LOVE:

"It doesn't take a hero to give an order, it takes a hero to follow an order."

Hi Chip, I'm right there with you... I have a grandfather (who is 90 now and does not remember anything or anyone) who was a fireman in Westwood. He was forced into retirement at 65 but still went to the station house to sleep and eat with the guys after retirement. It's just what he did for so long and he wasn't ready to give it up. He loved that life.
I remember the stories... bad fires that haunted him to saving people on 128 during the blizzard of 78 on snowmobiles.
There are so many good firefighters out there but like with all jobs, 98% of the people are good and the 2% can just leave a bad taste in your mouth. I have always had a soft spot for firemen and this clown won't ruin that for me!!!

mommyto4, God bless your grandfather too...a proud man...a proud department. More than it's fair share of sad stories...I was at Greenwod Fire Apparatus when the Norwood Chief got the call about yours....so sad...so so sad.

Sadly all it takes is a few bad apples to spoil the whole bunch. I will always look at firefighters as the hero's that they are.
They run into burning buildings when everyone else is running out.

Chip, Gramps is still kicking, however very very slowly... You may be thinking about 1 of my uncles who followed in his footsteps who passed away 11 years ago now after a tough battle... I also had 1 uncle in Norwood who's doing well... and I remember he dressed up as Smokey the Bear for an elementary school thing when I was in 2nd grade... he scared the crap out of me when he picked me out of the crowd and carried me to the firetruck!!!
It's in the blood for sure! Gramps was always the one who was just not ready to give it up.
I remember asking him recently if he knew any of the firefighters anymore and he does not (according to Gram)... there are a few grandson around but the old crew he worked with is long gone.
I just remember how they helped each other out and how Santa came around to all the firemans houses on Christmas eve night... it was just so special growing up and having such a big family around.
Now that I have my own family, we have a new tradition... we make cookies for all the firemen and policemen on duty in our Town on Christmas Eve... just to thank them for giving up their family time to watch over us... they usually tell my kids they are listening to the raido for Santa sightings and my kids get so excited.

Great Story Chip....yes that's the stuff you don't see on the news.

I think everybody realizes that in every organization/company there is an Arroyo type character.

We all tend to put 1st responders on a pedestle which they should be..but the pedestle rocks occasionally when a character like Arroyo pops out of the woodwork.

At the end of the day....they just fall off and another hero takes their place and the pedestle remains strong.

We were not good friends, Casimir. we met on a business trip, ate three dinners together, shared a business meeting, and met for an early morning hottub dip (for which the likes of shonhoomes questions my masculinity). I remember him because of what he did, over a dozen years later. His story was dramatic in its courage and decency. He did not embelish; he did not brag. I asked, he answered. He was humble in his answers, self deprecating, with that "Irish story telling humor" I remember from his boss Leo.

He quickly earned my respect. We have never since spoken.

Hi Chip,
I happen to see the video of Albert Arroyo and to say that there is nothing wrong with him at all, this guy is a disgrace to the commissioner and the department itself and why on earth does this firefighter complete in a bodybuilder contest coming in eighth place and there is not a darn thing wrong with him, can somebody tell me what this guy is and is he a disgrace or a fool in this case. Thank You, Casimir Zigulis

Chip, Let me give you some advice, I might not be the best person in the world and there are alot of people that I might know on the Boston Fire Department and they do a excited Job as firefighters, Now Albert Arroyo wasn't the best firefighter at all, besides instead of competeting in the bodybuilder contest he could have kept his Job, but decided not to show up for work and do the Job he was ask to do for the Boston Fire Department. Does that make very good sense Chip to you my Friend.
